One of the greatest songs and performances ever made. It is a classic. It made number one top of the charts in the United States and Britain around 1964. It is still considered a great popular hit today. I was around 14 years old at the time, and when that was played on the radio -- everyone stopped what they were doing and listened. It was mesmerizing.

Eric Burdon was 23 years old when he sang this. He is now in his eighties and is a great-grandfather and he still performs. The bass player, Chas Chandler discovered Jimi Hendrix and was his manager for awhile.

Chas also managed "Slade" who were very big in the UK.Several US bands covered Slade's songs.

Eric Burden and the Animals, The Rolling Stones, and a number of other British Invasion groups of the 60's brought something back across the Atlantic Ocean that we Americans had almost completely overlooked: The Blues. The music of Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Mississippi John Hurt, Bo Diddly, and many, many more Soutnhern musicians out of the Mississippi Delta region had been passed over by the popular music scene in the US, but had found uber cult status in th pubs of England. Those blues aficionados are largely responsible for laying the foundations of Rock and Roll as we know it today. Give a listen to I Believe to my Soul Woried Life Blues by the Animals. 'Definately not the BeeGees, but highly significant in the history of American R&R.

Loved this song. The music of our generation was fabulous. Kind of reminded me of the first time you heard the BeeGees. I’ll never forget that. They were singing Too Much Heaven and you were Speechless lol

I had several of their and Eric Burdon's LP's. Little Eric was a powerhouse. This is called BLUES! You gotta' belt out the blues like you mean it. It bares the soul and represents the hardships of it's origins coming from spirituals and songs slaves sang while working in the fields, often about pain and a hard life. Ain't gonna' whisper that kind of music. They were from Newcastle, a rough town with a lot of unemployment and hard labour so this genre fit their background. Alan Price (keyboards) went on to form his own group. Charles Chandler (the BIG bass guitarist) went on to manage groups and discovered Jimi Hendrix. John Steel was the drummer. Hilton Valentine the guitarist died recently. The Animals were excellent at the kind of music they did. Got to see them only once but on stage they were electric, real Animals who put everything into their shows. This staged video was very tame. Like many groups of the 60's, they were ripped off by their managers.

I remember my mom occasionally playing this song. Usually in the summers when I was young. The Animals have a definitely unique sound that is all their own and you know it's them when they come on the radio or someone plays them. This brings back memories of playing in clothes baskets while my mom folded clothes fresh from the line and swayed to the music.

Eric is now 80 yrs & still performing !😻 I was a teen when this band was part of the (peaceful! )British Invasion of America! I fell in love with this group & can recognize Eric’s voice immediately. A deep rabbit hole to go down, with this very popular group. Eric eventually left & joined a band called War & had some big hits . Each British group had their own demeanour, hair styles & Voices !🎸🎹🥁☮️ Sending greetings from Canada. By the way there are many Canadian singers & bands for you to discover… Neil Young, Burton Cummings & The Guess Who, April Wine, Rush, Alanis Morrisette, Bryan Adams, Randy Bachman & BTO etc … 😻🇨🇦❣️

Love it when poor Chad says "I'm so confused"! And that's how guys styled their hair back then! In 1981, Dolly Parton also covered this song, which may be worth a listen.

From '64. They were part of the original British Invasion. I still go to see Eric whenever he's in the area. The bassist & keyboardist both did background vocals. The guitarist was a sweetheart. He lived nearby.

I was in second grade when The Animals did this, but it was around the same time I first saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, so I remember it well. I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Eric Burdon's voice. It was hard, real, deep and had the perfect amount of blues for these lyrics. The Animals did not write this. It was an old song, and has been covered countless times. Garage bands playing at junior high dances did it, even to our parents' dismay. It's about a boy (or girl, depending on the artist singing) who ruined their life by getting into some rather seedy circumstances. Crazy thing is, one of the best versions I ever heard was by Peter Paul and Mary. Good grief, Mary Travers' voice made you believe she lived it. The organ here is masterful. That is Alan Price. He played a Hammond organ and also a Vox. This is a Vox in the video.

Loved these guys. Saw them later on and by that time a couple of members had left. The group got ripped off by their managers like many did in that era. Chandler went on to manage other groups like Slade and Hendrix. He died quite young. Alan formed his own group. Steel still plays and Hilton Valentine recently died. Eric was a powerhouse and on stage when in their prime they WERE Animals!

I don't normally listen to anybody but the Bees Gees and Pentatonix second. There is two reasons why I listened to The House of The Rising Sun is#1 I was born in New Orleans in 1956 #2 it was one of my middle sisters favorite songs. Unfortunately we lost her to cancer in 2022. I know she is in heaven and just danced to that song. I know I was really young when it came out, but I listened to it a lot. Thank you so much for playing it. It brought back a lot of memories. Saltay safe, God bless😊

Chad L. Summers: If you're saying that you don't "get" the sound of the lead vocal on this song, well then "you've really missed the train", because in light of this dumbfounding to behold "FIRST REACTION" of yours, then there is certainly going to be a whole lot more that your ears have "missed" if you can't further "get" and comprehend all that is great, as with the "leather-lunged" power of Eric Burdon's vocal here, and likewise and along the lines of a Little Richard, a John Lennon (kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5i5iKKqlN2lrqc), etc. etc.

That's why I disagree with most people who are trying to critique certain music they have no business. One, if you would only knew about the instruments. That guy wasn't playing the organ. An organ belongs in a church. This is a keyboard ! Back in the day, Eric Byrden was considered by many as having a great rock& bluesy voice. He basically stood above the rest. I have cherished his first successful album until today. That was the best keyboardst around. When I saw them play, Holly shit, it blew my mind.
