A trick I use that is not mentioned in this video, trim your dog's nails after bath time and BEFORE you take them out of the tub. The water softens the nail, which greatly limits splintering but more importantly, letting the nails soak whitens the part of the nail that is just nail, while the part that contains the quick remains dark. YES, this works for black nails too. The black nail does not turn as white as a light nail, but you will still see enough color difference to determine what is just nail and where the quick starts.

I use a small but strong light flashlight and I can see through my chihuahua's all black nails. My plan is to clip the nails bit by bit and then use a nail grinder every two weeks to keep nails short and smooth. Good luck!

Just clip them where you feel is very safe. Then a little more till you see a small circle, that's enough. If you do this often & grind them you can push the quick back and your dog will have super short nails. You don't need to make them bleed, ever. I will try & make a video. The angle can REALLY help.

When using a Dremel or other powered grinder/cutter, if you grind the nails for very long, the nail will get hot. That adds to their discomfort and pain and is frightening as well. If the nail is extra long, instead of grinding down the length at the tip, it may be quicker to start grinding on the side of the nail close to the intended length of the nail. Leave a little bit extra in case the nail bleeds and when you get the length off, you can go back and then take off the little bit that you left for safety. So since the grinding produces heat, I will grind each nail just for a few seconds and move to the next one. Keep rotating until you reach the intended length. That way, any single nail doesn't get too hot.

These dogs were really good while getting their nails trimmed. What about us who have dogs that act like they got a dose of Flocka when you bring out the clippers? Mine turns into a mental patient.
@kaylahall1219
@kaylahall1219 3 жыл бұрын
This is a fear response. They are going to throw all kinds of tantrum to find the point where you will eventually give in and let them go, just like a toddler. You will notice they will be 0-60, as it were the next time. They will go immediately to an even higher tantrum threshold than before, because they was the point where you stopped before. Does that make sense? You can retrain differently. Here is how: First, get relaxed together. Then pull out the clippers, to where they can see them. Gauge their response. If just seeing the clippers = Flocka mode; then leave them out and let your dog get upset and feel upset for a while. Don’t move to nail cutting or anything just yet. Just let the clippers be out. Let them see them and let nothing happen, then put them away. Next step: get relaxed again and then calmly pull the clippers out again. Let them see them, and hopefully they will be less Flocka Mode. Then put them away. Next step: continue to pull out the clippers. Move the clippers, make noise with them (the cutting sound). Let the dog experience the new things in a safe place. Continue this until they no longer immediately enter Flocka mode. Gradually bring the clippers closer to the nails. This is before you even begin cutting. Then hold their paw firmly. Bring the clippers to the paw and make cutting sounds next to the nail. So they can experience the feeling. Eventually they will be conditioned to not fear them. When it finally comes time to make a cut, make a very small cut. Take clips away a little at a time. The dog has been repeatedly nicked, time and time again, and that is what causes the fear response. We want nail cutting to be mundane and hopefully even to become a pleasurable bonding time, just like brushing. I hope this helps you, it is sort of like classical exposure therapy. Good luck in your journey

I always learned to use a bar of soap. I've been using this for 25 years. If you cut the quick, stick the affected nail into the bar of soap (not pushing it in with too much pressure) for a few seconds. It will stop immediately and add to the antiseptic aspect to prevent infection.

Funny experience for anybody that cares to read: I used to work as a dog bather at a groomer. I always wore my hair up (obviously) since I was dealing with wet dogs all day. One day, my hair tie broke, and I didn’t have any more with me. I have pretty long, straight hair. It flows straight down, so it’s pretty hard to keep it back. Long story short, I got my hair caught in a nail grinder, and it took my boss about an hour to free my hair without having to cut it. Moral of the story: don’t make my mistake 😂

I always give treats after clipping the nails. The amount that they get depends on how many nails I trimmed and how cooperative they were. Also, when first getting them used to the idea, only do one nail per day. As they become more comfortable with the process, go to one paw per day and then graduate to all paws. I find having the dog on their back makes trimming the easiest for me. This can make the dog more nervous. Pay attention to how the dog feels about things, take your time, and do what you can to help them get use to the process. Also, consistency during the process helps the dog know what to expect, which reduces anxiety. With black nails, if you look at the underside of the nail, you can often see the structure of the quick and can estimate where the end is. One last tip: do it in the sunlight when possible as their quicks are easier to see!

I cut my cats nails and all three of our dogs and my two Guinea pigs nails. Hope this helps someone. 😊

Try using some diluted lavender oil in either coconut or olive oil on them first as it will calm them. Use on the abdomen & inside area of the ear flap where there's very little hair. Rub it in & wait 5-15 minutes. Abnormal behaviors are often caused by vaccines as they call cause brain inflammation. We have a rescue dog who does this. Here’s some tips for beginners. -Use sharp/new clippers with a guard. -Use lots of treats and try to cut the nails when the dog is relaxed. -Try to make it a positive experience for the dog. -It helps to have two people. One person to hold the dog still and feed treats and one person to cut the nails. -Only trim small sections at a time and check the nail for the quick between each cut. -Do your research and look at photos for reference. Very simple.

I cut my own dog's nails and update the clippers every so often so that they're sharp. When I first started clipping my dog's nail he kept screaming and I had an old clipper with no guard my in-laws had been using. Got rid of that one and got a brand new with a guard and the screaming stopped. Discovered my in-laws had been using the same clippers, for years. Now he's so easy to handle. I do fluctuate between the paws, never finishing one paw because he gets irritated with me holding that one paw a long time, so I'll cut one or two nails before moving to another paw. He's all black claws, so I mainly aim where I want the end of his nail aiming for a centimeter or two just above his paw. Then I angle the cutter at an angle on the front of his claw, not the back, and clip the edge because his edges have a habit of splitting and don't want anything getting inside the split. It takes a little bit longer, and all nails do get cut, but he's completely patient as long as I'm patient with him with no screaming and putting his mouth on my hand to get me to stop. And no more bleeding.

Greyhounds are particularly troublesome, because the quick grows so close to the end of the nail. It's very difficult even for vets to get the nails down. The best bet for them is a dremmel-type trimmer. And do it often. No more than 2 weeks between trimming.

I have Iggy. And the only thing that takes her claws is Dremmel. I have a drawer full of nail trimmers and cutters (use them on my cat) that can't even scratch a surface of her nail. I had other breeds before but never seen anything like that. And, yes, the quick is very close to the end.

Depending on the animal, trimming the nails can be super easy or just better left to professionals. I never use a guard with clippers cause let’s be honest, they don’t help at all.... just get in the way of seeing where your going. I don’t do just a straight clip across the nail, I’ll trim around the edges slowly shortening them as I go. Usually you can see and feel a bit of softer material at the center of the nail as you get closer to the quick. Don’t go shorter if you see that. Also walking your pet a lot naturally keeps the nails filed down too. So that’s an easy thing to do. But they should never get so long that they curl around like that. It’s painful to them, can imbed into the pads, cause infection...

I think I’m going to invest in a nail grinder -when I try to clip my pugs nails it’s WAR. I’ve filed his nails before and it actually makes him sleep 😂 but doesn’t quite get the length down too much how I like it. Nail grinders are the way to go with fussy and slap happy pups like mine lol

Thanks to this I was more confident with my puppo And I tested the clippers He didn't seemed scared and even tried licking and nibbling them so I attempted to cut his claws . A specialist for black nails? Who specializes in clipping dogs nails? All vets and vet nurses should know how to do it. Also, am i the only one who hates safety guards on clippers? They can block the view, slide around and on top of that they arent even safe! My tip is to cut the nail little by little. If you look kind of under the nail and the part that is cut you can tell when you need to stop. Hard to explain but way safer than those stupid guards..
@AnimalWised
@AnimalWised 5 жыл бұрын
+Nix Pix Just to be clear, vets and veterinary nurses are specialists. So too are professional dog groomers. It is a general term for someone who specializes in a particular skill or area. The clippers used in this video have a safety guard which can be moved to the side and allow you to clip longer if you wish. We recommend using clippers like this as they work for people who aren't very confident, but the guard can be changed once this confidence builds.

@@AnimalWised ooh ok i see what you mean now.. Just a little confusing when you first say you should go to a vet or a groomer if the dog is agressive/uncomfortable, then you say if the nails are black they should go to a specialist.. But yeah, thanks for clarifying! I still dont like safety guards for befinners since you can easly cut to much when using them. Ofcourse it depends on the length of the nails, how big the dog is etc... which is why i dont like when people rely on them..

@@nixpix7003 tee hee, you make me laugh! Make up your mind, please. The guard is there so that you do not take off too much nail at one clip. When your use this guard, you are taking off very little at a time. You use this guard until you and your dog get used to clipping the nails. Think of the guard as training wheels on a bike. When you and Mom think that you are comfortable enough to ride the bike without the training wheels, they are removed.

I couldn't disagree more with using guillotine clippers for bigger dogs. Bigger dogs have thicker add tougher nails. The guillotine clippers squeeze the nail from the bottom up. This pushes the nail into the paw and causes pain. And they don't work very well.

Same with some small dogs. Mine is Jack Russell / Beagle. . Her nails are hard as rocks.. I agree completely with you. Never use those, they pull and push upward and I can tell when I tried them once .. hurt.. I didn't even go through with cutting even one nail. I use the Clippers shown in this video .. You need the guard if the nails aren't even long, possibly a weekly trim. If once a month depending on growth speed of dog.. then yes move guard out of the way to cut more of the nail. Use direct light or save up for pair that comes with a light .. In almost 10 years I've never cut too short on my dogs nails.. early this year I made the mistake a cut the nerve just on the tiny tip. It bled of course.. and my dog and I freaked out since she's never bled before .. (fixed before periods started). Stopped the bleeding shortly .. paper towel. . Damp.. she walked normally .. just needed alone time

Working in a veterinary field I dont agree with some things that were said in this video. Using a guard you can still clip the vessel. Guillotine clippers suck, scissor style is better. I agree with going slow and at your pets pace. Black nails go slow and watch for a "button" that is the vessel. Purchase a "kwik stop" powder from your local pet store incase you do cut the vessel.

You don’t need quick stop. Flour from your kitchen works just as well. Clipping them hurts no matter how you do it. Dremeling is the only safe and painless way to do them. And only hi speed Dremels not any of the slow ones they make for dogs. The slow ones heat up the nail and burn!

Comment/Question. My pitbull has blonde fur and light nails. She is 9 years old and always had her nails clipped professionally. A little over a year ago I brought my baby Max home from a breeder. He is a pure bred Shih Tzu and has a lot more grooming needs than cookie has. I know adopt or breed is a huge thing but personally I think it depends on what type of dog will fit with your family permanently rather than doing something good in the moment that ends up not working out. When I bought Max I knew how picky Cookie was and needed a dod that fir her profile. I also needed a family dog that would be ok with my toddlers. Max has earned that title. He has been my perfect dog along with his sister cookie. I just wish someone would show me one on one to cut their nails 😅

One day, the vet cut her nails for me, I just thought might as well since we were there already. They accidentally cut a few of her nails too short and caused bleeding (which they attended right away). Now, when I cut her nails, I have to make sure it's after her bath so the nail is softer and easier to work with, cut as much as I can, but still not too close to the flesh, then file it down. She still doesn't let me file them to where they should be, so I always have to keep an eye on her and checking her nails, she cries when I'm barley getting close to where I would like her nails to be, especially working on the ones that were cut too short at the vet..

It takes one hour per paw when clipping my dog…. Not easy, but it must be done - but I only clip the front paws. The back paw nails don't grow nearly as fast, or they use naturally, I don't know. Not our favourite past time, and always worried I cut into the live tissue!!

@@didibobo4866 I usually take him to have his nails grinded. They seem to get a better, shorter length. Most of his nails are black, that scares me.

@@mimime5376 Yeah black nails are a nightmare! Lucky for me, my dogs has transparent nails, but still it is a scary thing to cut them. Good idea to have them grinded instead!

Mimi Me Mine did, too. But the tips the video mentions are very helpful. I also put the grinder/trimmer on the sofa often, turned it on, then gave Bo a treat, without ever trimming his nails. He got used to the sound and look of the trimmer, and knew when it was around, he was getting a treat. Then I encouraged him to paw at it to get a treat. By the time I actually started trimming (about 2weeks later), he was good with it. Now he looks forward to it. I keep the treat out of reach, but within sight an smell, and he’s pretty focused on it during the trim.

Stiptic powder is BRILLIANT! I have a dog with black nails that grow like weeds and if I do nik her she bleeds for AGES (thought it had stopped one time only for her to lick it and re-open it again, bloody paw prints all over my beige carpets😵) Stiptic powder is a gamechanger! And does not appear to sting 👍
