If you ask me, I think the message of a show like the Goode Family should be how to do the most good and making sure you're doing good for the right reasons. Like you said, one of the main problems with the Goods is that they only really do good things for self-indulgent reasons and are often ineffective at it, and that's arguably the biggest problem with the left these days. Performative activism that ultimately changers nothing. I think a show that examined what causes liberals should and shouldn't fight for in the same way King of the Hill examined what traditions conservatives should and shouldn't cling to would have a lot of potential. But sadly, we don't really have a show like this. Sure South Park makes fun of liberals, but it only really covers the obvious stuff, like cancelling people and neutering comedy being obnoxious.
@Takisan1112 жыл бұрын
That actually sounds like it would be a much better show. Performative activism genuinely pisses me off because there are some absolutely great causes that need to be supported but far too often the people that get big in these groups are virtue signaling or just straight up hypocrites. While most of my personal beliefs have stayed the same over the years, I do try to be open to new ideas and the possibility that something I previously believed was wrong. I feel the world could be better if more people would try to do that too. And yet far too many people who usually claim to have the same personal philosophy usually are only doing it for attention. This is why people on different sides have a hard time trusting the others. Honesty is important and sometimes having an open mind really does mean that sometimes the one with the real problem is you. We can only hope that someday more people will learn to understand this. Having that be the message of The Goode Family would have been pretty cool.

Indeed. Though it's very true now days. The political divide just gets worse. Liberals are more of a problem within the USA than the conservatives. Coming from... One wants to tell people what to do in their bed, the other wants to lecture people on "they're a better person", waste public tax dollars on "education", but turn around get caught with critical race theory ( or hell renames ), still believes in shitty economics rather than getting rid of a monopoly ( aka socialism or corporatism ). Conservatives and "liberals" get on my nerves due these things. Both parties are evil, you only vote, to vote against the other side, rather than actually believing in the person you are voting for. It's voting for lesser evil scenarios, rather than true voting. Judge should written it before 2010. As it would be a lot more fair and understandable. Though he would get cancelled. It's a shame because I think this concept could work with reverse King of the Hill logic. Rather then have a person who wants to keep a status quo in a changing world but it has to learn to change or fight for his values, you could have it reversed and have a group that always wants change for the better but needs to know when to hit the brakes or when even change is not good. Off the top of my head I can think of an episode that has to deal with green energy, in particular solar energy. The Goode's realize in the beginning that their house is being powered by a coal fire power plant which will make them want to instantly invest in solar energy and go off the grid. They think that this is a pure net positive but ignore the downsides like Extremely expensive Unreliable And the equipment last only a few years before they need to be replaced and cannot be recycled. As the episode goes through they run into some of these issues but stick with it until the worst case scenario happens (like maybe one of the safety features don't kick on and too much energy starts flowing through the house causing light bulbs to burst and such) Eventually they realize that this isn't working so they go back to the grid. They are bummed about this until they open their electric bill next month and find that the electric company is paying THEM because their house is feeding energy into the grid with the solar panels. This is an excellent compromise and works to the king of the hills method very well showing that while they couldn't go full blast with the change they wanted, they at least are contributing in reducing what they feel is harmful. You can easily do some thing like that was the dog trying to make it go vegan one episode only to realize how much harm they are doing to their dog... Instead of torturing it every episode. Just a badly missed opportunity I say.

This is kind of something that has bothered me in TV for awhile now. Character wants thing, gets thing and it's good at first, but then thing does something wrong, character never wants it again. Is it so hard to get a plot where after a character gets a thing they want that they can keep it even though something went wrong, and their lesson is: "I need to be more careful with thing," instead of: "I should've never had thing to begin with."? It just feels so unsatisfying and disappointing for them to get something cool only to never wish it existed just because they got careless or it got out of control all the time.
@Lugbzurg2 жыл бұрын
@@AkameGaKillfan777 A common version of this trope is when someone becomes more financially-successful, and they just magically become snobs, and then the story returns them back to status quo later, giving a poorly-written "money doesn't buy happiness" message. Some examples of this are an episode of Jimmy Neutron where Jimmy goes back in time to convince his father to invest in something that will make him rich. in the rewritten present timeline, Jimmy's parents are spoiled snobs, so he goes back in time to undo it. There's also an episode of Kill la Kill where Mako and her family have been living in poverty throughout the show. Then, she starts getting promoted, which gets her family in better and better living conditions. Then, one day, out of the blue, Mako and every other member of her family abruptly become spoiled brats all at the exact same time. eventually, Mako gets demoted back to her old job, and she and her family jarringly return to their original personalities and horrible living conditions while acting like nothing happened.

Her mother is concerned that her teenage daughter has no interest in sex. Let me rephrase that: Helen is upset because her TEENAGE DAUGHTER wants to be ABSTINENT, and NOT SEXUALLY ACTIVE. What parent in their right mind would WANT their child to be sexually active, which poses the risk of them getting pregnant at a young age or contracting an STD? I'm sorry, I just found that a tad disturbing. I mean, if she doesn't wanna have sex, don't make her have sex! Edit: BTW, I'm not offended by the word "chick". Edit 2: That conclusion kicked ass! I actually thought of a premise for a show right now: There are two families+ one conservative, one liberal. Structurally they're the same, but wildly different in their beliefs. Both families stereotype each other in the worst ways ("That conservative family are a bunch of bigots!" "That liberal family are too sensitive!") But the way they're actually potrayed in the show is more nuanced. Maybe they could even have one kid that's the opposite. Either way, one of the kids from each family start a friendship and actually learn about each other as *people*, not stereotypes. Maybe the families even start to get to know each other as people. @@inovakovsky Subsidization requires money and that means either higher taxes or printing money which means inflation, so bad idea. The best way to handle this would be to impoze mandatory fixed interest (no going up the longer it goes unpaid, the amount that needs to be paid back is set in stone one the loan is made just in case it wasn't clear what I meant) for the student loans, the fact that the government is backing them means the risk is as low as it can possibly go for the lenders so there's no reason for them to be charging as much interest as they do. Adding onto that existing loans should be semi grandfathered in, so whatever is still owed becomes fixed and won't keep racking up but accumulated debt doesn't get absolved. Government intervention has also artificially driven up demand for degrees even for those interested in careers where they are absolutely superfluous which is the other half of the reason why the prices have been going up. The lie that university is the only way to success needs to die because it's enabling price gouging and the workforce can't really absorb all the people with useless degrees properly. Not to mention all the indoctrination that occurs in uni, that's what keeps pumping out all these wokescold cultists and was the primary vector for this disease that has destroyed public discourse among other things and threatens to rip society apart, more than it already has.

The Goode family could have worked really well, even if Mike didn't understand liberals that well. Basically, don't make everything about them Virtue signaling. Like the lesbians episode; give the setup like all conservative parodies of "we became friends over mutual interests, and after the friendship is well established find out you're homosexual," but then instead of ruining the friendship because "I just don't understand why a (wo)man would be attracted to another (wo)man, don't they realize how great (wo)men are?" it's because they celebrate it too much and other them because "you suffered so much othering, and I just want you to know I accept you even though you're different." Like, I've seen that happen in my liberal high school and college, where the gay kid stayed in the closet because of militant acceptance. The setup for the rebellious teen is also rather easy, have the daughter be cool because her parents let her get away with everything, and she's an entitled brat because of it. Like, the episode starts out with her going to school with a "bra with sleeves" shirt that is fashionable but most parents would say "no, you need to put a real shirt on," and that has other kids saying "throw a party and have your parents buy us beer," and they have some concerns because "that's more than just letting her discover the world, it's illegal," but ultimately do and then they have to deal with hosting a party with underage drinking. The concept is good, almost writes itself, and could have been king of the hill 2, but they just were too mean about it.

Again every point you made was articulated very well and makes me wonder...where has common sense has gone? Animation, like all modern media, has become part of a political culture war that continues to divides us all. In reality, animation should provide great escapism into fantastical worlds. I notice that most bad modern political commentary suffers from the exact same three problems: 1. It usually only goes after one side (usually the side the author hates) rather than making fun of everyone. 2. It's about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face. 3. It often cares more about shoving opinions in your face rather than actually making you _think_ about the issue. There definitely is some good social commentary on TV if you know where to look, but it's pretty bad when I can watch an episode of Star Trek from 50 years ago and its themes hold up better than something made today.

I've made a effort for over two years to understand the extremist persona online and the opinions given paint a negative picture. The main prevailing theme was a sense of justification for horrible things. They wanted bad things to happen to others and felt justified because they viewed the opposition as evil. But there were others who solely wanted bad things to happen to others because they derived enjoyment from it. A desire for power, freedom of consequence, suppression of opposing views and rather vocal opinions on race, sex and identity is what I viewed from extremist on both sides. As a result, I retreat further and further into my escapes, just trying to pretend all this stuff isn't happening and waiting for it to blow over. Again, you just described how almost everybody in the Goode Family does things "To prevent be looked as offensive" or "To look progressive", instead of ACTUALLY wanting to do these things. I get that it's hard to really get into this show without thinking since unlike King of The Hill, the first season to be on equal level, showed that Hank learned his lesson of how his perception of the world isn't 100% right, they would paint him as wrong when he's wrong and right when he's right. Because we don't get that here, it comes off as akward, consistently, which again, is the point when the whole attitude of the characters is to be right instead of being genuine.

Judge: Let's take King of the Hill, make every character unrelateable, make it over the top, and strawman the Liberal movement. Sound fun? Hank Hill: No way! No gotdang way!
@greg20162 жыл бұрын
It's pretty strange that Mike Judge was able to create two shows that are so wildly different from each other. King of the Hill was a show told through a conservative lens that actually had (and still does to this day have) a funny and smart way of satirizing American culture. Because of that, it managed to stay on the air from 1997 until 2010 and is regarded as one of the best animated sitcoms of all time; The Goode Family, meanwhile, was a show that was more inclined to just mercilessly mock (and yet still expect the audience to root for) liberals and their views on certain topics. Because of that, this show only got 13 episodes and doesn't really have all that much to offer, entertainment nor present-day social commentary-wise. While TGF is indeed terrible, its existence should still serve as an example for how you could go about telling these types of stories incorrectly (the same ones that Judge oftentimes got right with KOTH incidentally enough).

What I find makes a political piece of media bad is when it’s used to push the message before the passion behind its creation. I’m willing to give something a shot if I don’t necessarily agree with it as long as I can see some heart. But when a show’s sole purpose is “haha look it’s the first blah blah blah character protagonist now give us your money so we can appease our corporate overlords” it doesn’t even do what it’s trying to do correctly and inadvertently makes a mockery of the thing it’s attempting to promote because it’s that poorly written. Anime isn’t perfect, but at least 95% of the time the problem is either being a cash grab on a genre (isekai) or something else that isn’t politically motivated. I’m watching fiction to not engage with the real world, so at least try if you’re going to bring politics in.

The problem with inserting politics in film and television is that whoever's idea this was does it either too much or when it isn't appropriate. I personally don't know what it would require to stop this from growing. Even if we get a red wave by the end of next year (which I would prefer), it isn't going to stop this entertainment pandemic that's been going on for nearly five years at this point.

17:35 There was a person that blocked me because I liked Mr. Enter and agreed with him on some stuff. This person said he is, in their own words, “a rly shitty person”, because a guy against child porn being used to teach sex ed to kids is a shitty person. This is the world we live in now 🙄

I think the issues with Enter wasn’t his opinions on child porn or sex Ed. His reaction to criticisms, or how he talking about the creators of certain shows was probably more too do with it.

@@willhiggins9563 This person blocked me in June, sometime after Enter posted his PSA video, which obviously got some people on Twitter fired up. I’m only bringing up what Enter said at 17:35 to prove that he’s not that shitty. These people act like he’s a Trump supporter

@@jeremyneil1125 Well, most of his COVID, BLM, and healthcare takes are cringe tough to the point he is barely politically literate. Seriously, I considered making a vid on them, but he deleted his DeviantArt posts and his vid on healthcare while others, i.e. Suris on healthcare, responsded to him.

Okay, so I'm probably jumping the gun a little bit here, with this comment (I'm making it right around the 7:26 mark) but I think I know what the problem with this show is: they took characters that _should_ be side characters, and made them *main* characters. Poking fun at and critiquing an ideology is actually perfectly valid as a tactic? But I think it's *_exceptionally_* difficult to do, when the characters are the main characters, who get the most screen time. I had a similar sort of problem with the Pirates movies, particularly when they wanted to focus exclusively on Captain Jack Sparrow; Jack is a supporting character, and works best in that role. When he is the primary character, he cannot function in that same capacity, at least not to the same degree. As such, all of his flaws become far more prominent, and the story suffers as a result of that. Everything I've seen about these characters suggest they should be relegated to short snippets of a different show. An episode's length dedicated to them, at most. Otherwise you have what likely got the Goode Family canceled: an over-abundance of obnoxious character types that no one on either side of the political spectrum likes.
