I know that Kafka used Gregor's transformation into a bug so that it would be seen as repulsive to the reader and more understandable that the family reacted negatively to him, but I love all living creatures and the descriptions of his little legs trying so hard to get away as his father was chasing after him nearly broke me. So many times the descriptions of him hiding under the blankets, full of garbage and dust made me want to just swoop in and grab him and clean him up/pet him. I can't be the only one that felt that way. I thought Gregor was described ironically as pretty cute and it's so sad he was treated like that before his death. RIP Gregor.

So Gregor works tirelessly in his miserable job to pay off his father's debt and also provide for his family. His father despite having saved enough money, which Gregor brought in, which could have freed Gregor of his slavery, kept it hidden. His sister and mother owned jewelry which they loved to flaunt on certain gatherings and occasions, hired maids for housekeeping, all the while Gregor sacrificed his dreams and happiness for the sake of his family. All three did nothing to help Gregor or themselves while they enjoyed life at Gregor's expense. And what now? Since Gregor suddenly turned into a beetle they treat him as if he is an intruder and tries to get rid of him. In the end they are quite relived at the dearh of Gregor.

Very much how I interpret the story. I've read a few interpretations in the comments section here that blame Gregor for being a burden. But the irony is that the family had what they needed to move forward the entire time; The nest egg of money that his father had saved, his mother and sister's jewellery... They could've easily supported themselves, but Gregor broke himself trying to appease them and support them, and in return all he ever got was cruelty. From his parents, from his employer. When he stopped being productive from his family's perspective, they shunned him and treated him as a pest.

Even my grandfather had a similar story. He worked hard and built three houses, he was a teacher. When he became old, he supported himself and family with pension. He had three daughters. Suddenly one day he had stroke and his daughters were looking after him well. After 2 months they gradually skipped his physiotherapy exercises. After 5 months they weren't helping in any exercise. He lost all the ability to even sit. One day he became unconscious, he was admitted to the hospital. He was fed through pipe in the nose. After 4 days he passed. But even now after 2 year when they discuss about him, they just talk about his pension loss and how he could have built one more house. I was living in another city doing graduation, I just visited from time to time. I warned them not to stop physiotherapy, but they did. I just feel sad now.

This book helped me exponentially in an odd way. I worked myself nearly to death for my family business. I received less than legal wages, built the structure, did the landscaping, didn’t miss a single day of work for years & co managed it for 2 years after my mother became ill. Eventually I decided to go to school to try getting my degree, but alas, the business almost went under & my family relied on me to pick up exponentially more work. I read the story and I believe that the sister could have done so much more. She is the only person who is closest to Gregor. Yet, she didn’t think of asking simple questions like “can you do tis or do that” to know whether he can understand her or not. Then when we approach near the end of the story. Gregor’s father said they don’t know if Gregor can really understand them and this really is what annoys me. The sister could’ve prevented that situation from happening. I see this book as followed: once you've lost your ability to provide for other people, they will stop providing for you. Cause why would they help you everyday if they get no use from you? You will become a problem that needs to be removed from their lives and once you do, they will be relieved. It's portraying the life of someone who can't contribute to the society and how their family could react, first they are feeling sorry for him ( his sister noticing he doesn't like milk, his mother not wanting to remove his furniture) but they become more self oriented over time until they don't have the space for him anymore. I see it as a story of a man transforming from his sad life, whereas he was used and overrun by those who claimed they loved him. Him metamorphing is his changing from his previous life, not only in actions, but in mind, in heart, and everything, to metamorph and be free. Metamorphosis consists of an insect literally melting into a soup and being rebuit using marginal discs, forming into something completely different. I think the fact that it happens out of the blue is Kafka's way of illustrating that tragedy that dehumanizes us or ruins us as functioning members of a society (or maybe just, when it becomes clear that to us and all others, we are worthless) isn't always tethered to a cause. As in Frankenstein, with some thinking, we can atribute monstrosity to the doctor and humanity to the monster...here in Metamorphosis we can say that the insects or parasites are his family members and Gregor is the human. It is not a thorough observation and it can be made better, but I think it expresses my point in a comprehensible way.

Maybe reminds me of father. He was thin, very intelligent and he was a teacher. All my grandparents (6) were teachers and dad too. Then the job of a teacher got low and was not well paid back then at least here, he changed his job into an engineer, it was ok paid and he worked for like 10 years in Russia, to gain money to save me from birth. He had a quarrel with mom and because of their quarrel I lost my twin. I was hospitalized for 80 days and dad worked hard to have money for my health. He returned after 10 years with a car, gave us a lot of food from Russia and we were happy. My big sister was studying in Romania from dad’s money, they were little yet she still wanted more money cause the books and all cost a lot. Dad and mom gave her money. Dad gave me money too for school and care, yet his job smelled a lot and came home with a horrible smell a lot, he suddenly became addicted to drinking. He drank and drank for 20 years everyday, his car is broken for years and can’t buy new one or repair, he became very fat, no one knowing why he started drinking, he became violent because of his drunk habits. He had no friends, no job to his liking, mom hated him, sister broke the family relationship with us because of a man, she changed herself for a man and left family forever. I too, was alone, dad too. I tried to help dad, tried to talk with him, spend time with him, he couldn’t think straight and pushed me and became violent. I only saw him cry only once, he in front of me, I asked why, but no answer until now. I tried my best to change him, but he didn’t want to.

I cried horribly, because, when my Father got stroke three years ago, I once ever thought about how become a burden and useless he is to my family, even almost everyone of my big families didn't want to see us in my house, as they said "I can't see your Father condition". Then, I read this, and really feel guilty about all what happen to him. I wish I am making this story up, but what I write here is real, I think I have destroyed my father feelings.

The theme of transformation from the novel inspired Shotaro Ishinomori to create the first Kamen Rider after seing the doodle grasshopper drawing from his son(his child by that time was Jun Onodera) and then replace the proposed Skullman live action. It may have indirect impact but it serves as content reference from the book.

I don’t know if this was the point of Kafkas work, but I think it’s quite sad and reflective of modern society that Gregors primary concern when he wakes, is not that he has turned into a literal insect, but instead that he is late for work. Very insightful of Kafka to perhaps for-see how people will place work and gaining some form of societal or material success, over their internal and external wellbeing.

Why everyone is cussing over the family? Well there could be have been times when gregor was a kid and his family made a sacrifice to make him a grown man from a kid. Yeah, there is a fault with his family but just imagine from their perspective when they saw a bug so close living with them and couldn't understand what he spoke. I m not saying that his family is a saint and did not make any mistake. I am just sharing a different perspective to view the situation. Don't be emotional, its just a analysis.:) Atlast, things i learned: - You have to be responsible for your actions, live how you want to live(taking rational actions) so that later you don't find any way to feel regret or blame someone for your life. - don't be nice and expect good things to happen in return. Just be kind if you want and it totally fine if you don't want to but don't hope for something in return. - Work hard but at the same time think smartly.

It's an analogy for internal feelings or beliefs that conflict with expectations from society and/or those close to you. Even if he manages a small change or exacts his will with one 'leg', the rest just continue or 'go through the motions' by default. It's just the easiest thing to do: the path of least resistance. He's recognizing himself moving through his life just doing things automatically, even if they conflict with who he really is or how he feels. .. He no longer finds meaning in what he does and it feels foreign to him, imposed, not authentic. All visual references to Gregor's appearance are about his identity and it's non-conformity. An insect because of disgust. Society is disgusted. Gregor is disgusted. Gregor's struggles to get out of bed are really: his struggle to exert his identity and act on what he believes in. He manages to 'get out of bed' finally and some doors are opened. He is revealed as what he really is, what he really thinks and values. Everyone in his life reacts poorly when seeing the authentic Gregor. The more aware that people are of Gregor, the more problems there are. His existence, who he really is, brings complication to others' lives. It's only natural for them to be adverse to Gregor. Crawling on the ceiling is Gregor's preference, it's what he wants. Gregor is being himself. His sister recognizes the bed is actually a burden to Gregor. His family insists to keep the bed there "for Gregor", or else they would feel complicit or enabling of Gregor's abnormality. The bed is there to constantly remind Gregor of what he "should" be doing, that he is different and should just conform. They lack empathy for Gregor, they don't understand him. If they were to accept and embrace Gregor, it would create problems for them. Their peers would treat them like Gregor is treated. Gregor dies and everyone else moves on "normally". Less burdened by the troubles brought on by society, in response to those like Gregor. I tried to make this as general as possible. You can apply this analogy to so many experiences.
