Alright, so I see many people commenting facts about Howard's life, but many are actually false or rumors, so here are some that you can easily verify: 1- Despite being from aristocratic descent, her family was pretty poor, her father being one of 21 children and herself being 10th out of 11 kids. Her parents, especially father, often found themselves begging for money. 2- She was Anne Boleyn's first cousin (her father and Boleyn's mother being siblings), BUT she also was Jane Seymour's distant cousin (their grandmothers were sisters). Which means that out of 6 wives, three were blood related. He really had a thing for this family. 3- We don't actually know how old she was when she died. Her exact date of birth being unknown (sometime in 1523), she was either 18 (most probable since she died at the beginning of 1542, in February) or 19. 4- This is also the reason why we don't know whether she married Henry at 16 or 17; however, we do know how old he was: 49. All we know is that she got beheaded one year and 8 months after their marriage (or, 3 months after her title of Queen got taken away). 5- Her mother died in 1528, and soonly after, Katherine H. was send to live with her father's stepmother, the Dowager Duchess (of Norfolk). Sadly, the Duchess was negligeant and wouldn't really educate any of her wards (kids of artistocratic but poor relatives), especially not the girls. 6- Because of that, Howare was influenced by the other female wards who would allow men into sleeping areas at night, to play cards obviously. 7- As she was clearly more interested in dance & music than studies (she wasn't really ever described as a scholar), she started music lessons with two teachers, one of them being Henry Mannox, who took advantage of her by using the 6th fact, making her think that was normal (which it technically was back then, but not for non-married young girls.) 8- We do NOT actually know Mannox's age either. We suspect he was in his early to mid-twenties (around 23), but he might have been up to 36 years old. 9- He abused her for around 2 years; however, they both admitted, at court, that while they did have sexual contact, they didn't have penetrative sex. Which is STILL extremely gross, considering she was 13 and groomed. 10- After that, Dereham and her entamed a "relationship" when she was 15. He was either 29 or 32 (some think he was 25 but it's pretty unlikely + still wrong & morally reprehensible). According to records, they would call each other "husband" and "wife", and admitted to having signed a precontract marriage. If the Duchess hadn't found out about their "relationship", they would've echanged vows and would've been married in the eyes of Church. 11- She met Henry when she became a lady-in-waiting for Anna of Cleves, via her uncle the Duke of Norfolk who got her her place at the court. 12- The Howard family really wanted her to marry Henry, as a way to recreate the influence from Boleyn's reign (reminder, Boleyn's mother was a Howard herself). 13- Henry actually nicknamed her "his very jewel of womanhood"; the "rose without a thorn" is likely a myth. 14- "No other wish but his [Henry's]", that's what her motto became. 15- She was also Thomas Culpeper's distant cousin. 16- When she got arrested for infidelity, the King ordered to the guards to remove any object that might help her commit suicide. 17- As she had sex with Dereham (oh, he's back), the man got hanged as she got beheaded. Both his and Thomas' heads were placed on spikes atop London Bridge. 18- Defending herself, she denied any precontract and standed by her version: Dereham had raped her. While this IS what happened, as a 15yo can't consent to a ~30yo, them calling each other spouses got her unbelieve (despite the grooming & all, again, this happened over 4 centuries ago). 19- She did repeat laying her head under the block for hours and hours, the night during her execution. 20- Howard made a speech before getting beheaded, saying that her punishment was "worthy and just", asking for her family's mercy (as everyone but the Duke of Norfolk got arrested) and praying for her soul. She also said that she "deserved to die a thousand deaths for betraying the king, who had always treated [her] so graciously". 21- According to the popular folklore, her last words were "I die a Queen, but I would rather have died the wife of Culpeper". However, no witness reported this, instead talking about her speech of regret. Last words of a Queen being pretty much important AND getting reported to the King, it's extremely unlikely that she ever said that. 21- We do NOT know whether Culpeper raped her or not. Historians do suspect it, the writing of the letter found in his room being erratic and looking forced, but outside of this, we don't know. While K. Howard was saying Dereham raped her, she always admitted having an intercourse with Thomas. Jane Boleyn (Anne B's sister-in-law, her brother's widow) also witnessed & even organized some of their meetings, which is the reason why she died, joining her husband, sister-in-law and cousin-in-law. 22- And to finish: even in the case were Thomas didn't rape her, he used her to gain political power. The King was sick (hence why he died not so long after beheading Howard), and having been friend with him while having a relationship with the Queen would've gotten him a lot of power after Henry's death. He never loved her. Wasn't her lover, and wasn't her friend either. [I'm done and it took me an hour to research and write so pls be nice if I made any typo

Idk Anne Boleyn was actually beheaded because people falsely accused her of having an affair with her brother And his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was forced to marry a disabled man who died before they could even consummate their marriage then was just past down to the younger sibling. Who when she grew to love after a 24 year long marriage. (Even though he repetitively cheated on her and banned her from his chambers after her failure to give him a son) This husband fathers a bastard. Then literally splits from the church that his family has been with for generation just to divorce her. She also lived throughout the entire 5 more wives so she had to actively watch from afar as a man she loved and the father of her children did all this.

Katherine’s story is so sad. She was so mentally unstable. @Liam_Phoenix5 жыл бұрын
@Dark spirit44 Stockholm syndrome is a condition in which hostages develop a psychological alliance with their captors during captivity. The most heartbreaking part is that Henry called her his “rose without a thorn”. Francis came to her at court and blackmailed her into letting him work at court, along with a woman she lived with at the Dowager Duchess’s house who knew everything that happened with Francis. She was surrounded by people using her, her uncle consistently told her how stupid she was and what she needed to do. Henry also tended to listen to her opinions. She also had a fur coat sewed for an old lady in the tower because it was winter. She was such a young child and truly sweet in temperament, and was just constantly pushed around by the men in her life.

Katherine was really sweet but the people abusing her are empty, no soul. She didn't deserve what happened to her. She definitely had it the worst as she was 17-19 when she died and her death was very painful, unlike Anne boleyns death.

It’s so unfair that Catherine has been written off as a promiscuous vixen and a foolish idiot. She was so much more than that - well-mannered, generous and kind. I believe that she was innocent, even if historians can’t agree if Catherine was abused or not. There’s little proof that she and Culpeper had sex and, by her own confession, evidence that there was coercion involved in her relationships. But, even if she really was guilty of adultery and willingly slept with Dereham before she married the king, it’s still not fair to call her a harlot. She was just a teenager who didn’t understand. And to die at so young an age, no older than 21 at the very most. The musical may omit some important details of Catherine’s life, but at least finally some poetic justice is being done for her. However, I’d just like to add here that Henry VIII probably never called Catherine his ‘rose without a thorn’. Historian Claire Ridgway, over at The Anne Boleyn Files, has written an article in which she debunks this myth. The phrase actually originates from a coin struck in 1526, which bore the words ‘Henry VIII, the dazzling rose without a thorn’. I highly recommend you give it a read, it’s a very interesting piece: www.theanneboleynfiles.com/katherine-howard-really-henry-viiis-rose-without-thorn/

@readbluelock67134 жыл бұрын
@@nobodyimportant9603 I can confirm this
@somebody34874 жыл бұрын
@@nobodyimportant9603 There is no conclusive evidence that Howard was raped during her marriage - it is just a plausible theory. Not only do the confessions of Catherine and her alleged lover Thomas Culpeper strongly suggest that they never had sex (she stated the night before her execution that she was ‘guiltless’ of ‘defiling’ the king’s bed), but it is impossible for to us to know exactly whether or not Catherine consented to her relationship with him due to how fragmentary the details are. Historians Lucy Worsley and Retha Warnicke have pointed towards some of the more platonic language in the alleged love letter written by Catherine to Culpeper, suggesting that perhaps they were just close friends or that Catherine wrote it an attempt to appease him. Worsley and Conor Byrne have also expanded upon the theory that Culpeper (and Dereham) blackmailed Catherine; there is evidence that Dereham openly spoke about his relationship with Catherine. Culpeper could have easily caught wind of this, and with knowledge of her past, used it to coerce or persuade Catherine into seeing him. However, most historians still believe that Catherine and Thomas had a genuine, romantic relationship - or, at the very least, that there was no rape involved. It is not a stretch to say that there may have been some mutual feelings between the two (either platonic or intimate), since we know that the two met up in private and exchanged gifts. Whilst the love letter has been interpreted as evidence of the use of blackmail and coercion, it can just as easily be taken the other way. And yes, there is a report from the time describing charges of rape and murder against Culpeper (which, if genuine, would allow us to make an almost sure conclusion about the nature of his relationship with Catherine), but it has been dismissed by a handful of experts as unreliable. I am not saying that Catherine was promiscuous or that she was guilty of adultery - I am of the opinion that she was pressured into her relationships and was more than likely assaulted by Mannox and Dereham. She was only a child; it was not her fault and she didn’t deserve to die. However, it is simply not accurate to suggest Howard was beheaded for being raped - not only was she, legally speaking, condemned to death for not disclosing her sexual history before meeting the king, but accusations of rape were not wholly disregarded in the 16th century. Whilst ideas about femininity and masculinity were certainly different in the Tudor era, many cases of sexual assault were treated seriously - hence why we have numerous documentations of abuse from the period. The issue is not as black and white as the musical (or the comments section) make out. There is an absence of strong evidence for both sides of the argument - it is as likely that Culpeper did pressure Catherine into seeing him as it is that there were close romantic feelings between them. It is all just speculation. Apologies if I come off as condescending and pedantic; I don’t mean to lecture you.

K Howard’s life in a nutshell: Katherine got used by several men as child, then when she was around 15, her uncle made her a lady in waiting to Anne of Cleves and put her in King Henry VIII’s view, Henry liked her and married her while Katherine was only 15 or 16, Her cousin, Thomas was working in the palace, and helped Katherine through tough times with Henry, then Thomas told her that he loved her (in ways that someone should not love their cousin) Katherine rejected him, Thomas told King Henry that he and Katherine had an affair, and he sent her to the tower, the night before Katherine lost her head, she spent many hours practicing how to put her head on the block, and on February 13th, 1542, Katherine Howard was beheaded, when she was only 18 or 19

THE ENDING WITH HER EXECUTION IN THE SHARDS OF GLASS I WAS NOT PREPARED
This is so sad! She uses such childish terms like ‘birds and bees’ and ‘enoughsie’ so she’s obviously had her childhood robbed off her. Playtimes over is sorta like inferring what I’ve just said about her childhood being cut short. This is also the same case in the first part about her being 13 going on 30. She goes on about her thinking it’s different so that means that she only wants a friend, and she doesn’t want any men making moves on her. TL;DR : She had a few years of childhood, then got deceived until she was killed basically :(

Fun fact: One of Elizabeth I's childhood friends, Robert Dudley, supposedly claimed that she first told him she never wanted to get married when she was about eight or nine years old. Guess how old she was when Katherine lost her head? (On Valentines Day as well, just in case Henry wasn't being dramatic enough already.) This was a fucking traumatic event for all involved, and is probably a big part of the reason why we ended up with the Virgin Queen Elizabeth.
@pandaghost64 жыл бұрын
I saw this and decided to research it, the year Katherine died was the year Elizabeth turned 9, Katherine dying months before Elizabeth's 9th birthday, meaning when her step mother died, she was 8. So she was about 9-10 years younger then Katherine.

Her being a virgin queen also meant she retained power. If she had married she would have lost her power to the king, her own husband. She was a well educated woman, who knew as soon as she married and had a child she would no longer be in a position of power but an object of succession

God like at the start of the song she's trying to minimise the damage done by these guys by acting all flirty and coy about it (thirteen going on thirty! Um no honey you were a babychild) but when Thomas betrays her trust it's just the last straw and it all just boils over. It's so sad. And that's before her head comes off!
@erzsebetbathory76395 жыл бұрын
Soo, I've been doing some research and I think the closest she got to a "real connection" was actually Francis Dereham, from what I understand they were pretty serious about their affair and planned to get married after he came back from a business trip to Ireland, even referring to each other as "Husband" and "Wife". That until the Dowager Duchess found out and she was sent to be a lady in waiting at court, where she met and was pressed to marry Henry... Mannox molested her, she expressed she couldn't reject his advances (I mean, she was just 13 and he was 36), we all know how Henry was as a husband, and regarding Thomas Culpeper, she only looked for a "sincere" friendship, when he made advances toward her and she rejected him he raped and then blackmailed her, which ultimately led to her execution... A truly sad story of continued abuse. Edit: This is the first time I've gotten so much attention for a comment, so thank you all for that Edit Two: As you might have guessed, yes I'm kind of a history buff and so I love learning about it and participating in discussions of the subject. And yes, I've got a soft spot for Katherine/Catherine (I see no reason to start a debate about it, both forms seem accurate to me considering the pretty lax orthography of the time period) and I love Kat in particular because I feel like I can sort of resonate with her and her situation, being trapped in repeatedly and worsening abusive situations it's horrible and feels to me like a cautionary tale to women (and men) on this day and age, I feel endless empathy for those who are or have been trapped on a similar situation...

Here are some facts about Catherine Howard - I will update this comment whenever I come across interesting information: - Her birthdate is a mystery, but most recent estimates put her year of birth at about 1523 or 1522. No official documents of her birth exist, so most figures are based around the wills of her relatives or charters of the households she served in. - There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to spell her name, as there was no standardised system of spelling in the Tudor period. Historians have variously spelt her name as ‘Catherine’ or ‘Katherine’, but in her letter to Culpeper she herself wrote it as ‘Katheryn’. - She could play the virginals. - She was a lady-in-waiting to Anne of Cleves. - Catherine was educated in etiquette. She took her duties as queen seriously and carried out plenty of kind acts, such as sending warm sheets to the imprisoned Margaret Pole and securing a pardon for Sir Thomas Wyatt. Catherine also gifted Anne of Cleves two puppies and ring, despite the presents originally being for her. - Henry VIII probably never called Catherine his ‘rose without a thorn’. The phrase comes from a coin struck in 1526, years before the two were married, which bore the words ‘Henry VIII, the dazzling rose without a thorn’. - Catherine never had a legal trial. She was instead condemned to death by an act of parliament. - Her behaviour in the months leading up to her death was erratic. Eustace Chapuys recorded how she was ‘cheerful, and more plump and pretty than ever’ and that her only request was that the execution ‘be secret and not under the eyes of the world’. Later, she became hysterical and had to be forced onto the barge which took her to prison. - According to Chapuys, she requested that the block to be brought to her so that she practice dying gracefully. It was expected that nobles would go to their execution with great dignity and die in the image of Christ - that is, forgiving the executioner and accepting one’s fate. - She made her last confession to clergyman John White. She swore ‘upon salvation of her soul, that she was guiltless of that act of defiling the sovereign's bed’. - She wore a black velvet gown to her execution. - Her last words were not ‘I die a Queen, but I would rather die the wife of Culpeper’. This myth comes from a highly fictionalised and unreliable account by the writer of ‘The Spanish Chronicle’. Eyewitness Ottwell Johnson recorded how she declared her ‘lively faith in the blood of Christ only’ and then asked for ‘all Christian people to take regard unto [her] worthy and just punishment’. - The story about her collapsing and needing help to climb the scaffold does have some historical basis, as it comes from a recording by Charles de Marillac. However, this needs to be taken with a small pinch of salt since Marillac was not an eyewitness. - She was, mercifully, beheaded in a single blow of the axe. None of the accounts of her execution support the claim that it took more than one attempt to sever her head, or that the axe hit her back. - She was executed alongside her lady-in-waiting, Jane Rochford, with Catherine going first. Jane Rochford had been accused of arranging meetings between Catherine and Culpeper. Jane was the widow of George Boleyn (beheaded), the brother of Anne Boleyn (also beheaded). - Her remains (body and head) were buried in the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, within the walls of the Tower of London. - There is a story that lye or quicklime was poured over her body to make it decompose faster, but this hasn’t been definitively proven. RIP Queen Catherine Howard, c. 1523 - 13th February, 1542

I actually like the small attention to history at 6:32 where the artist depicted Katherine resting her head on a headrest. Apparently it was believed that while she was in jail she has specifically requested a block to practice laying on for her execution. There’s so many details and tragedies in Katherine’s life that the musical kinda skims over, which is understandable, but this poor girl went through so much in those 19 years of her life.
