Really appreciated the discussion on motivation and burn out. I'm realizing that for myself, just doing ridiculous additions to make myaelf laugh is the best way to keep going... Finding the fun.

The efficiency/grind mindset is so hard to unlearn. I don't think I could ever work on just one aspect of a game. It gets unfun doing the same things over and over again, even if it's something I love doing.

For me the pivot to gamedev's helped offset a lot of the slog-- the variety really helps! When I'm sick of one aspect I can just go do another haha Back when I was more purely focused on the art alone, there'd be so many days I'd wake up, and to progress I'd have to draw. It was still the funnest thing to do and I was driven by the desire to see the thing through, but yeah that creep towards burnout was real.... Outside of that, though, letting the obsessions drive the process I think's the correct way to go about things hehe

Yes~ I don't know that I could work in an industry setting where I'm just doing one aspect of development. There's definitely some advantages to having that variety! A never ending buffet of different tasks lol

Hi Jen, adding more art to your game really shows how much you love art.. I'm doing something similar, but with code : ) and I have to say that I also feel very burnt out when I'm constantly doing only one thing and switching between individual tasks really helps a lot.. sometimes I get to a stage where I lose interest in my project and I can do a million procrastinating things just to not find time to work on my project.. as if I feel like nothing has happened around it for a long time, so probably no one cares why I still care.. it's a very dark place and at that moment, only talking about my project will help me, where I will actually realize why I started it and what plans I had at the beginning, and it will give me a kick to work on it.. I was wondering if this is just my problem or if other people have similar issues..

I think what you are describing is what I usually feel when I talk about burnout. Normally I'd be feeling that by now (working on a project for over a year) but somehow learning new things has been warding off that feeling. I agree that it really helps having someone to talk to and share some interest :)

As a comic creator I find animating very hard, but the results at the end are worth it (even if it's only like 4-5 seconds) it's the little victorys! 😂
