Animation Stuff: Background Design Tips and Tricks

Hi, I'm Andrea Gerstmann! In this video I show you how to design a forest background for an animation Adobe Photoshop.
I'm an artist and animator working in TV animation. I sometimes create short animations completely by myself, and often get asked how I make them. Animation Stuff is a series of videos where I takes you through how I achieve different parts of the animation process.

My backgrounds always look so flat and one dimensional, and the character looks as if they are standing in front of a poorly drawn photograph.

I'm not good at drawing backgrounds myself but Ive been studying animations and watching tutorials like these to see what causes that floating. So far Ive found it is usually the perspective of the characters placement and the relationship with the BG being a bit off, if that makes sense. If i find that tutorial that explains what I mean I'll link it in a reply for you. Colors as well play a part. I learned sharp bold bright colors of the characters on desaturated, softer BGs with a completely different texture due to medium, can cause a artstyle clash, where the cel character pops out the BG TOO MUCH. I'm tryna figure out an art and painters style that works best for this anime style I have cus the current style of Anime BGs don't really work for me... plus current anime BGs are sort of overstimulating for me my character design already has a lot of detail.. Along with practicing color theory so painted BGs and Cel characters don't clash as often. Similar palettes between the BGs, scene, and Character, create a good mood and atmosphere I notice, also practicing perspective and composition myself, godspeed my guy

What resolution do you usually make your background? I like to add camera zoom in’s in the animation and I don’t want the backgrounds to look pixelated. Also which resolution is ideal for 4K ?

What brush do u use for scatch

I don't remember what brush I used for the sketch.. it really doesn't matter what the brush is as long as you turn opacity to pressure sensitive. I also kinda have a thing for turning the airbrush mode on for sketching; it makes it so your light strokes are big and transparent and when you press hard it makes it opaque and tiny. I usually press lightly for sketching and only press hard for adding detail so it weirdly works.
