It’s also a shame that Warner Bros. refused to properly market The Iron Giant despite how much praise Brad Bird got from the executives. It’s like they wanted to intentionally sabotage his movie so it would be forgotten about just so they could steal his idea. Looks like that backfired.

Warning: creatives going to meetups, hold your dearest from the eyes and ears of stranger danger. Vampires and succubus come to siphon and recycle your concepts, your years of work. It’s okay to commune, to learn from each other. I learned the difference the hard way when i saw my exact title about people whose life stories coincide along a bus route. Dude even used my same title and character concepts. I was naive, felt powerless. Even after i stood in front of his table, reading, i didnt have the courage to confront. He was seated and still managed to look like he was leaning back waiting to be slapped. Yep it’s best to do some sort of registration before going public. Only share learning at these meetups. People don’t do verification of identity with the group. No way there to know who’s legit or thief. Sad, so sad. I rode crosstown to a convention to see i’d given away my work to one of those bloodsuckers.

Thievery exists in almost every element of the movie process. Was asked to supply some concept sketches for a production... Didn't hear back from them. Few years later, late one night I saw a film on TV. Rushed to my room, dug out the old script, sure enough it was the same film. And sure enough, the monster looked eerily familiar... Like it jumped from my sketchpad "somehow". Big or small budget, there are sneaky bastards everywhere.

Brad Bird wanted to make this film for a very particular reason. His sister was previously shot and killed by her estranged husband in a murder-suicide. That event put the idea in his head of the gun coming to life and not wanting to be a gun anymore, which is the theme of the film. Executive meddling would absolutely destroy that message.
