I discovered anime the exact same way! I couldn't sleep around one in the morning so I decided to see if there were any cartoons on. The first thing I saw was a white haired man with dog ears swinging a massive sword around and a monk with a black hole for a hand. I was never the same again.

Pilot Candidate was not only cancelled, the manga was never finished cuz the author worked in other projects and he never looked back, it's really shame honestly cuz like you said, the thing I remember the most of that anime was the glorious music.

Sad. Had the Anime and Manga got a chance to finish, maybe we would've learned more about the universe the Characters lived in. …Or it could be a Steaming pile shit from onset to conclusion without any real idea of how to tell its story!

Pilot Candidate was reportedly missing a full manga volume of character development, and suffered from the jaded nature of the fandom. Blue Gender... was okay.
@Xbalanque848 жыл бұрын
For me, what really pissed me off about Blue Gender was how poorly their mechs were designed. In the beginning, people were dropping like flies, often in ways that didn't seem believable. The situation was made considerably worse by the fact that the cockpits of the mechs left the pilots body parts (especially the head) exposed. Not even a windshield, just a big hole in the front that the Blue could (and did... often) skewer the pilots through. I'm not an engineer, but that seems like a ridiculous design flaw, particularly given that the mechs were supposedly designed to fight/reclaim the Earth from GIANT FLESH-EATING BUGS.
@martind56538 жыл бұрын
I actually find armor shrikes design rather amazing. It feel rather military and real in compare of like almost every other mecha. I think other mecha should be more like this. Sure, pilots head was exposed, it rather unreal flaw, but how you said, mechs were dedigned to fight giand bugs, not making cover from enemy fire, thats probably why it was like it was. Also pilots have better visibily even though at least windshield should be add in case of raining for example. What really pissing me about was that unstable continuity when sometimes 4 AS get massacred by one Blue, in other cases, regural AS (not with B-cells) was rather eligible in fights.

"Why is there a cat girl here? It's never explained!" You missed the one minute explanation for that didn't you? No seriously it was explained, she was involved in an accident during a victim attack that destroyed her ears and to replace them they biologically replaced them with the only material they had. She is embarrassed by them because she feels it was a shoddy job and didn't want to be made fun of for them but when everyone came to accept them and not make fun of her for it she stopped wearing her hat.

Although I am old enough to have watched blue gender way back, I only found out about it in 2019. Being a post apocalyptic genre fan, I think this was a fucking great series, especially the first half. No other post apocalypse anime managed to capture the many aspects of the atmosphere of a modern post apocalyptics world so well. Its bleak, depressing, morbid, chaotic and at times desolate. The journey to baikonur managed to show all of that I really live this show And ive been telling a lot of people about it
@itzjustphil88228 жыл бұрын
Like many others here, I very much enjoyed Blue Gender. That being said, I also agree that the first act is by far the best, but for a reason not stated in this review, and that's showcasing just how much of a living hell the Earth has become. It's hammered home just how horrific and brutal life is and the very understandable disdain the remaining population holds toward Second Earth, and when these characters are killed off there is a genuine sense of tragedy and it really hit me and made me care. But...seriously? We're really going the whole "humanity is a scourge upon the earth and must be eradicated" route? Is it possible to find a more generic and overused plot point? And I also agree that the actual function of the B cells is kinda lame, a special, powerful genetic gift held by only a select few...that makes them better at piloting mechs....another plot point that, as Sage states, isn't exactly revolutionary. That being said, I still feel that the good outweighs the bad, and the tenuous relationship between Marlene and Yuji was handled well, particularly how Yuji reacts to the nightmarish reality he's forced into, as I could see myself feeling very much the same. Overall, awesome when focusing on individual characters but the overarching plot leaves much to be desired.

Childhood, ten years old in the year 2000. I was a lucky kid and had an old boxy TV in my bedroom. My dad won a better one in a raffle and gave me his old one. It had cable and everything. I liked Yu-Gi-Oh, I liked Pokemon, and I was at least aware of Sailor Moon and Digimon. I was a cartoon lover watching Scooby Doo and Dexter's Lab every week. One night, I couldn't sleep. It was around one in the morning. I turned on the TV, thinking maybe it would help to have some background noise for me to drift off to. I had school in the morning. I flipped to Cartoon Network, unaware of the change in schedule once a certain time slot hit. Whatever weariness I may have had left me as I was greeted with something I'd never seen before: a man with long white hair and dog ears using an enormous sword to cleave through a giant moth creature. I saw blood. I heard Intense, triumphant music and rhythmic drums pounding. I didn't sleep that night. I was too transfixed. InuYasha, Blue Gender and The Big O, not to mention the sheer weirdness of FLCL were my first forays into the world of animation aimed specifically at adults. I'd secretly watch InuYasha at night when dad fell asleep. I'd get up super early in the morning so I could eat breakfast and watch Zoids in the kitchen. When the internet came around, I learned that I had a whole community of people who loved this stuff and I learned that I was a fan of an art form called Anime. My life was changed forever

Not gonna lie, I can agree with most, if not all the points made about Blue Gender. That being said, something can still be enjoyable without being good. Objectively it might not be the best series, but it was still an enjoyable watch when it first aired, and it was enjoyable when I rewatched it like 10 years later. 'Course I'm a SUCKER for just about anything with Laura Bailey.

You hit one a really low point to Blue Gender, the main character being weak and annoying, then shifting and back. Marlene was a great character and had good development. Other points I found less valid, the story of earth riding itself of humanity, B cells, was not that bad at all and I found it interesting. The blue look like vagina for several reasons but mainly because they were birthed by Mother Earth. Anyway was not a bad story if not for main character, if he were written better would have been perhaps an all time classic of the genre.
@1cioda8 жыл бұрын
2 things about blue gender (spoilers) 1. he made a mistake about the blue that controlled people. the scene he showed when talking about it was the blue that could train power, just latched onto a bad guy if the episode. there is no blue that can control people. I have no idea where he got that random idea. 2. the power stealing blue only shows up in 1 episode because every episode after takes place on 2nd earth. and the focus stopped being on fighting the blue. every scene on earth from that point was inside an armour shrive (stupidest name for a robot suit ever. like rly. what is a shrive. how is that in any way a good name for a super robot suit. just call it an armour) side note. I do like blue gender and I do agree that the ending was out of nowhere. but from the start, up until yuji goes crazy. (yes it's very sudden. and that is easily the part where things start to go downhill) is pretty good. but after they kill the rogue sleeper (who is probably the worst bad guy I've ever seen. and with the amount of crap I have seen/played over the years. that says alot) after that. it becomes a fucking mess of a show. that ending is absolutely awful. but up until that. it's actually pretty good. just a heads up. don't get attached to anyone in the first half of the show. the only consist characters are the 2 main leads. aside them. everyone else changes with the wind. side note, sage said that the b-cells were made to fuck over humanity. but that is never actually stated as fact. it's only ever said by the rouge sleeper, who is clearly not of sound mind, and is under the delusional fantasy that he is a God meant to save the earth by killing humans, all with the assistance of the blue. in actuality. the b-cells are were just some random sickness (which turned animals into blue......for some random reason that is never explained. like. at all.) and yes a main character does state that he agrees with what the rogue sleeper said, but for any of this earth fucking humanities over because lolz, the ending would have to completely reccon itself. which it does do. the fact humans made the blue by accident does support the rogue sleepers ideas. but let's also keep in mind that for any of what he said to make any amount of sense, the earth would somehow need to be a completely sentient being (which it is later shown to be. but it helps the main character. so it can't really think that killing humanity was a good idea. since it helped save humanity for no explained reason) I love poking holes in someone's review when they glance over certain details. especially that specialized blue part. I love anime abandoned. but I'm sorry, saying that there were blue species that clearly don't exist, (mind control blue) just reeks of not giving a shit about the information you say about a show.

I just stumbled across the show on KZbin last week and I've already watched them all. Fantastic show, great mecha design. The only complaint I have is the ending. I understood it, but it just seemed kind of rushed and half assed
@bahamutkaiser9 жыл бұрын
You never know with these kinds of anime, most mature themes don't get much follow through as the audience is automatically limited to older people, I should look to see if there is a manga with a longer story, but I was satisfied with it, they kinda made it apparent that Yuji wouldn't be able to withstand battle very long without consequences, so there was pressure to come to a conclusion pretty much since he was altered.

So the thing about Pilot Candidate, or more properly, Candidate for Goddess, is that it was something less common back then but super common today, an anime made as a promotion for a manga. These anime usually only get 12-13 episodes and then an OVA, if DVDs/Blu-Rays sell well, then they may get subsequent seasons. That's part of the reason it never had an ending. The other reason is because of the Manga Artist. The Manga Artist is the same Manga Artist that did DNAngel. She typically does shoujo mangas... and she typically gets bored with just about every manga she does and puts it on hiatus forever. She did it to Candidate for Goddess, and she did it to DNAngel. Thankfully DNAngel got anime original material and wasn't just a promotion. The manga, unfortunately, is doomed to never be finished. In DNAngel's case that is actually kind of sad, because it was a half decent shoujo romance... and she stopped writing it on a huge cliffhanger that was bridging into the climax. I seriously hate that manga artist, at least Togashi has the excuse of back problems, she just gets bored and starts a new project.

I agree. I really can't think of any other Sci-fi anime like it that doesn't involve a character having super powers or something. I also liked the romance in it because it's one of the more redeeming parts of the show. The main character is at first a whiny guy then turns into a baddass who's out of control then becomes balanced. And the female character is a wooden emotionless soldier who opens up and then also becomes balanced. Most anime, especially nowadays when it's all about moi/schoolgirls and fan service never have of this level of character development.

Anyway, "Blue Gender" was decent enough to keep me watching. If it had been terrible, I would have stopped after the first episode or first few episodes. I really like its theme song, which also made me want to keep watching the show. And the ending theme song is okay. EDITED TO ADD: And I agree that Yuji was hella annoying in the beginning. He was annoying at certain parts later on in the series too.

Pilot Candidate was a serious shame. I put it right up there with Raise R to the Second Power among manga cutoff tragedies. Sure, there were certainly aspects that were a bit generic, but there was a lot of feeling and a lot of interesting potential to the series, if only the author hadn't put it on the shelf and forgotten about it. And of course, the dub didn't help the show AT ALL. Seriously, the dub was nothing short of a travesty. On a side note, I find it odd that they had to cut "Your breasts are rather developed" (which should've been "your boobs are huge", simultaneously commenting on what he noticed and complaining about nearly suffocating) for ADULT SWIM.

The first time I watched anything mature on Cartoon Network was the night they had shown Vampire Hunter D. It was a part of a triage of anime, of which included Rise of the Robots and a third I can't quite remember... of which D was the only one my parents would allow me to see, cutting it off at the Midnight mark. It wasn't exactly impactful, but I did enjoy what I got to see, and seeing the adverts for that block were very enticing to me. At the time, there wasn't anything gritty out there that I could really latch onto, and these advertisements were like waving a $4,000 computer in front of me.. Good thing my parents were less stringent about the ratings of games I played when I was younger.

An excellent plan, only with two minor flaws. 1. Sage has a cut off date of 10 years (so anything from 2004 is okay to review in 2014, but nothing from 05 or 06 is allowed unless one or two years pass by). While this flaw can be solved, the other can't be. 2. Sage only does dubbed anime, because that's the whole point of Anime Abandon: to look at the anime released in America from our past. Either the most brainless excuses of shows or the most excellent classics of the era. School Days has never had an english release, so it's never unlikely that he'll ever review that piece of fuck.

While I can understand the mistakes that Blue Gender has, and pretty much shoves a jarring ending down our throats. At least it has an Ending! I just like the fact that this series started off so strong with its dark atmosphere, its unsettling future, and its very human characters. The Later parts of this series felt rushed, and I originally thought the Blue were created to clean up the polluted areas of earth to help the environment. Not Be HUMAN Vacuum cleaners for the earth! To me, the ending felt rushed and felt like it needed closure…Maybe because the Production company was running on fumes for this anime, and needed to rush ahead, taking any route to resolve it before they scraped. Personally I like "Blue Gender:The Warrior" movie a bit better. But in all honesty, this series wasn't as bad as many thought. It was thought provoking, and the Blue's ever Evolving arsenal of bugs made the show interesting no matter how BS it seemed. The Heel turn for the "Crazy soldier" was a bad idea, but I'm not ashamed about liking this show for some of its missteps.

I know both VOTOMS and Blue Gender were written and directed by different people, but they were both created by the same person. And both shows have the same kind of out of nowhere/left-field bat-shit crazy/stupid ending. They start out like normal "a boy and his mech" anime. Then you find out that the boy has some genetic "super pilot genes". Then the boy becomes some weird equivalent of some sort of "space God". Both shows start out intriguing. And both shows have weird ending storylines that basically ruin it for me.

So upon rewatch of Blue Gender, I can say this. 1. the idea of the B Cells being related to the blue was apparently a plot point to 7 chapter manga made to this. (it actually goes up the point of going to second earth the first time though ends with the guy leaving, only for Dice to blow up the ship...the guy actually starts turning into an insect human hybrid LOL) 2. I think the ending could have been salvaged...IF they ended with Yuji beating Tony and basically leading humanity away from Earth. Giving the series a "hope for Humanity" type ending. Like Earth letting them go with the lessons they learned so they can start over, maybe with a voice over of Yuji saying, "perhaps in due time, humanity can return to Earth and co-exist with it" 3. The idea of the blue being hyper evolved and adapting species was a bit hinted at early with them finding hatchlings with shielding. Though I think it could have had better establishment and perhaps more species to fight could have helped. Like seeing more regular species and then the "evolved" ones that force them to change tactics 4. Keep the whole "anyone can die" angle, but aside from few characters, you don't get enough time to care about them before they wind up dead. Also maybe establish what happened to the surviving characters they did meet. Like Dice and the Nomadic Tribe. Would have been nice to have closure if ya ask me. Honestly I think blue gender is a decent but very flawed series. A C+ in my opinion, especially in retrospect. It has decent animation, the monster design is memorable and the mechs, while a bit stupid with the whole "they only wheel around, so uneven ground must be a bitch for them" and the cockpit being exposed, does look pretty sick.

I liked Blue Gender, my first real exposure to more mature anime, but I could never quite figure out their fixation on mechs. I mean, giant bugs would seem to be the Air Force's wet dream, bomb the hell out of them from 40,000 feet and be back in time to tell all the horny second earth girls you're a pilot. But then again, there wouldn't be a show if they did that.

Blue gender reminds me a lot of evangellion, the main characters are pretty much the same, there's mechs, and they both have a non sensical ending

And you think Blue Gender reminds you of Evangelion, it reminded me of Attack on Titan. But Blue Gender was made before Attack on Titan.

...So one year near Christmas time, a pawn shop kind of near by where I live was selling all DVDs for a buck, so I picked up a bunch of random anime to watch on long trips, or when the cable's out for one reason or another, et cetera. One of them was "Blue Gender...." Great...

all the points you made about blue gender, I feel like you didn't pay attention near enough cause I understood exactly what was happening throughout it. not only that, I loved the character development through out it. You just woke up in an appocolyse and one of the first things you see is people being murdered by a giant bug then it spits this goo all over them and cracks their bodies into a single ball of goo. And yes he did grow up in a different time, that also explains why everyone is having sex, hell the show even tells you that one. They enjoy what their body wants because in the next day, they could be dead, just count how many friends and squad mates they lose in the first 3 episodes. And Yugi becoming a psychopath is also explained. It's the b-cells that are doing it to him, it's making him become a blue in and of it's self, if you actually paid attention to what you were watching rather than all the sex scenes like an adult and not a child, then you'd see that. Only problem I had with the show was the ending, i feel like it was to broad, not enough explained. But hey, they got to be together, and that's all I wanted to see.

Blue Gender is an incredible psychological thriller and is not all that bad compared to MANY anime. It has a great american opening theme song and no the mystery is NOT the only thing keeping the viewers attention. The relationship between Yuuji and Marlene kept me hooked throughout the entire series. Also, the disease does effect him. WTF do you think happened to him when he started piloting the Devil's Edge? Oh, I guess it doesnt EFFECT him.. lmao.

I never understand why so many people shit on Blur Gender. Its actually quite good. Its like an anime version of the first Starship Troopers movie Its always been a hidden gem to me that everyone else just always seems to claim as crap. Which is funny cause there are so many other shows out there that are far worse by leagues

Animax SEA called Pilot Candidate "Candidate for Goddess" for some reason. I watched the entire thing years ago and now I just think, "What was that all about?" BTW, I think the one who did the art is Yukiru Sugisaki, the same artist as D.N.Angel.

The blue seem like they would make an interesting game? The more you use a specific magic/weapon/tactic/etc the less effective it becomes until you run out of options completely and just die, the end.

I want to say I vaguely remember Pilot Candidate briefly going over cat girl's ears. My memory may be way off, but I seem to recall that she had an accident and the cat ears were a surgical replacement. Why cat ears, I have no freaking idea - but she is a normal human. @_@ Granted this is like nearly 3 years too late. XD
