I think the reason why Lupin did what he did to the fake bills and felt the way he felt about them is because he's a thief, not a con-artist. It's basically Lupin's job (at least according to him anyway) to steal valuable items, and he relishes the effort people put into guarding their valuable valuables. But fake bills are by definition completely worthless. They are phony, fraudulent, and completely without value. To a thief who prides himself on his ability to get past the most airtight of securities to steal possessions that are worth more than the economy of most small countries, there is nothing more worthless than an item that pretends to have worth and only exists to perpetuate that lie. At least that's how I see it.

And it's exactly how I assumed as well. That and i assumed that Lupin wanted to also see Clarice again, as well as just enjoying the challenge and fun of fucking up the Count. Of course these things are all a little later down the line, but considering we were under the impression that Lupin is a changed man now, it was safe of me to assume this.

As far as realism goes, while having a trenchcoat, fedora, and mask under a neoprene diving suit might be stretching it, the MythBusters confirmed "Plausible" an old James Bond (Connery-era) trick, where he finished a mission in a dry-suit, swam to land at a private party, and came out with a perfect tux underneath.

Bennett, we goofed on the credits roll on the DVD. Up through 2014, Richard Epcar was credited as the voice of Jigen on nearly all internet sources, and for whatever reason, we didn't question it until after the DVD was in the can. Michael Gregory wasn't credited anywhere online or on any official credit rolls (everyone used pseudonyms on that dub, after all) until we did the research (with some help from an online enthusiast), confirmed it with Michael personally, and got his nod to fix it for the Blu-ray credits.

GOddamn am I happy you mention the speech, because that is my favourite moment from the movie. Hayter just filled that speech with so much heart and effort you can't help but say it along with him. also, I love how the titular castle DOMINATES most of the film, with only a small handful of scenes not taking palce in or near the castle, and the castle itself is what leads to some memorable scenes, and is perrfectly encapsulated as an impenetrable death trap. Basically, the Castle of Cagliostro is cooler than the death star.

I can answer both questions about lupin and the money: lupin is, at heart, honourable about his job, and prideful. Stealing fake money is not a worthy achievement in his mind, and completely wastes his talent as a thief. Hell, he steals shit more out of a sense of fun and pride than for monetary gain.

i feel like lupin's a lot like sly from the sly cooper franchise. his motivation isnt to get rich off stealing, but just the fun and sport of a difficult heist. you can kind of see some of that when he's reminiscing about his past break in to cagliostro. its just what he does
@MrMarket19877 жыл бұрын
I often figured that Lupin III really did embody a rather romanticized ideal of adventurous thievery and burglary. Money certainly was something he would often try and steal, but it was more about reaping the rewards of a beaten challenge than simply for the sake of it; He LOVES to be flashy and be met with obstacles about it all, so the bigger and tougher the heist, the more he was attracted by it. Stealing counterfit money, to one like him, isn't nearly as intriguing as finding the source device and prints that made it all into such indistinguishable quality in the first place. An extremely eccentric treasure hunter if there ever was one when he's sometimes satisfied in seeing something most never get to see up close to appraise it, he just happened to come across another interesting adventure at the same time.

Yes, and unfortunately Richard Epcar still lists having done Goemon for this movie on his resume because that's what the DVD wound up saying. If it's any consolation, I have Kevin Seymour's original casting notes for this film (as well as the SAG bills/receipts for the dub) that lists Michael Gregory as having voiced the character. Can't exactly blame him. lol

Castle of Calliestro was the 2nd Miyazaki film I saw after Kiki and I rented it just because it had Miyazaki's name on it. I went back and watch this movie again after Sages review (it's on Hulu if anyone wants to check it out) and I think the clock tower scene also influence the Castlevania games. The way the clock looks, that you fight a penultimate boss on top of the clock, and after an evil count is vanquish that the tower itselfs just breaks apart and falls into a lake. Very Castlevania like.

Eh Lupin have been such a long franchise there's just different versions of the characters. Went to watch this on Netflix, and I think they used a different dub or something. I think some of the voices sound different, and I don't remember Clarisse saying anything about wanting to be a thief in that version. What sealed it for me that it's different is that the scene where the ninja guy realizes he's out of a job has completely different lines. He just says cagliostro's reign is over and then the samurai says something to the effect of "evil tends to destroy itself."

Couple of fun facts; there's an older English dub of this film which I actually own on VHS, which I think is even better. Aside from that, the hood popping up on Lupin's Fiat 500 is actually reference to the Abarth-tuned racing Fiats, where they had to do this to keep the engine cool.
@RichardWatt7 жыл бұрын
Lupin's Fiat 500 reminds me of the old East German Trabant, or that car the CIA guy in Goldeneye had when he met Bond at the (allegedly) Pulkovo Airport (but that's a comment for another time), and used a sledgehammer on the fan when it wouldn't start...
@autofox17447 жыл бұрын
The car in Goldeneye is actually a ZAZ-965, a Soviet-made car heavily inspired by - though mechanically distinct from - the Fiat 500. It in fact looks quite a lot like a Fiat 600, an enlarged version of the 500. The Trabant is just a coincidence, though. It took its styling cues from a lot of small European cars at that time, and was a contemporary of the Fiat 500. It was the first production car with an all-plastic body, though!

Animaze credits on non-union productions such as this were notorious for not always being episodic. Just got into this channel. Been going through the backlog of videos and ran across this one. This anime was one of my favorites. I owned Castle of Cagliostro on VHS way back in the day. The dub was different on VHS, especially the voice Lupin. I'm guessing they re-dubbed the cast because of degrading audio quality over decades. I miss the old voice of Lupin, he was played far more playfully and was actually funny... I know this is an old review and no one has commented in years, but does anyone know where to get the original dub?

Should've talked more about the Japanese cast too. Oh well, great review. Could you look at Mystery of Mamo next? PS. I also feel I should mention that in the manga, Goemon is written a lot better. He's sort of the wide-eyed innocent who pretends to be all stoic, because of his samurai roots, but still has a silly side to him that is bought out by lupin. He and lupin start out as enemies, but he eventually looks up to him as a teacher.

DAv2003 Oh yeah. The Genon dub of Lupin The Third Series 2 is a good example but it's still good in my book.

+Goleon The Geneon dub is by far my favorite dub. I know it plays a bit fast and loose with the translation but it's so damn funny

Michael Gregory DID voice Goemon in the dub but he was uncredited

If and when you do My Neighbor Totoro you have to make mention of how there's a Fox dub and a Disney dub, and how the Fox dub is the better version because professional voice actors play the two little girls, whereas in the Disney dub children play the sisters and don't do a very good job. Also, for when you do Princess Mononoke show the difference between the Alliance Atlantis dub and the Disney dub, wherein the AA dub Billy Bob Thornton was the main villain and they actually recorded English singing for parts of the English dub, which honestly was better performed than the Japanese singing. The weirdest part about the Disney dub for Princess Mononoke was that they hired back some of the same actors, like Billy Crudup and Claire Danes, and had them redo their lines, and you can tell they did not give two fucks the second time around.

+Jessica Jeffery (Trikucian) Hey, if you're a Lupin fan you may want to check out the 2016 animated retrospective we are covering on the franchise this year on our channel! - this movie is great!

+Jessica Jeffery (Trikucian) To me Dakota fanning in the Disney dub sucks, but I do like her little sister playing the younger one she does sound more authentic.

Lupin is the corny, up-beat action star desperately needed in the world of anime.

You HAVE to reference the Cliffhanger arcade game based primarily on the animation from this film.

Wait, you mean all this time I've been pronouncing "Lupin" wrong? D: I have been pronouncing it "Lu-PIN" not "Lu-PAUN!"

I agree, that was a fun movie. I do love Lupin the 3rd in general, and while this isn't my favorite installment, it's a great film. I will contrast a bit, though. I actually quite like Goemon's quiet and oddly selfish manner. It's a nice contrast to Lupin and Jigen, and the fact he isn't terribly heroic is almost refreshing to me. He's a ronin, though and through, not a noble paladin-samurai. But yes, I hear your side and respect it. Just a taste contrast.
