honestly shocked you get comments about "complaining too much about/don't love cons." i think you're just being real, and i love the transparency. i don't think anybody is capable of being 1000% positive about something they enjoy all the time 😭 on another note, loved listening to this this morning! 😊

As a 50yr old artsy woman who is looking forward to starting their own art business, I totally appreciate your honesty. You’re definitely not negative at all. I think it’s funny that there’s some KZbinrs telling artists not to romanticize their business because it gives people the wrong impression of how hard it can be, then you have people saying to essentially not be a negative Nancy and have an opinion or express anything other than rainbows and unicorn farts. Maybe it’s generational or I’m just old, but I don’t think pointing out that there’s room for improvement is being negative. I will also point out that I was fortunate enough to work in GA, Atlanta and Alpharetta specifically, and OMG! The people really are that kind and gracious. Seriously the nicest humans! I’m glad that you had a nice experience in GA, and I’d say give the con another chance. I’m sure the organizers have noticed that not all changes are awesome, and booking themselves during finals week probably wasn’t the smartest plan. Thank you for sharing your experience and for another great video ☺️

Personally as an introvert it scared me off when vendors stare at me or try convincing me to buy their stuff a lot. Like I’ll walk off and come back later if I’m really interested. I hate feeling guilty for not wanting to buy anything when the artist is right there watching lol!

As someone that goes to AWA every year... yeah this year was really disappointing. I get they had to leave the old venue, but I'm not a big fan of BOTH of our largest anime conventions being held in the same giant, soulless building. At the old location, if you weren't sure what to do, were bored, or got tired of walking you could go to the hotel lobby, grab a drink, and people watch. There's no good hang out spots in the new center, it's literally just a bunch of corporate hallways and the big dealers room. The fact that the convention was so close to Christmas is a big issue too, most people don't have the funds to do Christmas and spend hundreds of dollars at a con in the same month, its also really hard for people working in retail/shipping to get a whole weekend off during the busiest time of the year. It definitely kept me from spending more than I usually would, and I could only afford the time and money to go one day. Apparently its gonna be scheduled EVEN CLOSER to Christmas next year, insane! I honestly think one of the reasons people were so awkward was because there were too many tables for the amount of people that were able to attend, and the people who did come are probably more financially strapped than in previous years. There were a lot of tables with no customers run by unhappy looking artists, and I think people felt too bad sticking around a table they knew they weren't going to buy from. Also, with the whole "no one wanted to get the deal" issue, literally every booth I went to had a "buy 3, get 1 free deal" and it just became too much. Like I can't spend an extra 10-20 buck at every table I go to, even if it's technically a good deal. I started saying 'no thanks' to them too. All in all, very disappointing convention. I truly feel bad for the artists that couldn't make their money back, honestly every artist there were amazing, there were just too many to choose from. Unless they have a j-rock/metal band I really love show up next year, I probably won't be buying a 2025 ticket.
@lunastoir
@lunastoir 24 күн бұрын
Thanks for your insight! I am curious. Do you happen to know how many artists attended this year compared to last year? I hear many conventions increased the number for tables for artists but I wonder by how much.
@velvi8359
@velvi8359 24 күн бұрын
@lunastoir I watched another artist alley vlog where the artist stated that the con doubled the tables from 200+ in 2023 to 400+ this year. I am not sure where they got those numbers but the exhibition hall this year was absolutely massive compared to last year's. As for attendees I believe AWA themselves expected about 36,000 attendees, which is definitely not double from last year. It's like maybe 2-3000 more.
@lunastoir
@lunastoir 24 күн бұрын
@velvi8359 thanks for this info! I also watched another vlog about the number of tables doubling from previous years. I am concerned it's multiple conventions who are doubling the number of tables but the number of attendees staying relatively the same. 😣
@velvi8359
@velvi8359 24 күн бұрын
@@lunastoir Its unfortunate, it shows a lack of care towards the vendors and artists from the convention itself. I guess they are just hoping the artists and vendors just deal with the poor sales over the next couple of years until the convention grows into the new space, if it does at all. For everyone's sake, I hope they can grow and secure better event dates for 2026, otherwise they might have bitten off more than they can chew at the GWCC.

I also noticed the more “weirder” interactions for this con. I am from Georgia and we are all about southern hospitality here as it is in our culture and that was just something I also expected to see here. Interestingly enough that wasn’t the case and I’ve said hello to many people at this convention and they give me weird looks or even run away 😭😭😭

I’ve heard perspectives from people engaging with the more recent “era” of anime con goers and just the overall climate of the anime community in regards to people interactions, and I found it quiet interesting. My last convention I attended was in 2018, and overall the experience was normal. Now fast-forward into and past pandemic times and anime has certainly gained attraction, and with that a new breed of people. I’ve seen people state how the dynamics of social exchange in cons have changed drastically after the pandemic and tbf I know it’s a fact outside of cons. So it goes without saying, it doesn’t surprise me that is may be the case because as a considerably og anime fan who grew up on Naruto being part of the OG 3 era for example, vs the newer generation that may have had BNHA as their first animes, there is generational difference, especially with how we interact with each other at cons..

Tracking inventory advice! I use Shopify and I track all my sales from cash to card. When I order inventory or make it I add how much I have in stock and when it comes to cons I have deal discounts. Where I can add all of the individual items they got and use the discount button for the deals. This allows me to track all sales and all inventory much easier than writing each sale down

I really appreciate the business perspective that you show in these videos and the reality of how artist alleys are, and how sometimes sales can be disappointing and sometimes you could even make no profits. it's helps us all see that even artists who are quite well known and have amazing well-loved products can have lower sales than usual at times and things like that, it shows that it's normal and not your fault, there are other circumstances and factors at play. those reassurances mean so much in a way that some non-artists and non-business owners will not realise

Don't listen to the comments saying they think you're complaining. You didn't sound like you were complaining at all. Informing your audience about your observations of the con is not complaining. You're sharing your experiences and sometimes experiences are not as great as you expected or wanted them to be. It happens. I've watched a lot of your con videos and they always seem informative to me. I'm also glad you got to explore the city outside of the con, hopefully that was fun and relaxing. I also get the introvert thing because im the same way. I hate last minute plans specifically because I need a few days to prepare 😬

Loved the video and the honest review! As someone who volunteers for almost every Georgia con, this was AWAs first year at GWCC and first year in December. Its normally held at Cobb Galleria but there has been a whole battle between the current GM and the con with it being too similar to Dragon Con but that really wasn't the main reason. He just didn't want it to be another party con and that's caused a huge battle for the last few years. It was a lot of a mess for everyone honestly, even the volunteers! I hope that they'd figure out all the kinks and if you come back in the future, its 20x better

I really hope they go back to a Halloween con it was perfect and also they have always done a 4 day con I usually go Thursday-Saturday and give away my pass for Sunday! It’s usually pretty dead in the forest and last day not sure if I’ll go next year either I think momo is my new go to!

both my friend and i were really considering whether or not go since we love artist alleys and there aren’t a lot of conventions in georgia. we both ended up not going because 1) she knew would spend too much money in artist alley and she didn’t have the budget for that at the moment and 2) i thought the ticket price was too high for a convention that was making so many changes and i couldn’t even see what panels they were doing other than their hololive events. the attendee’s povs seemed to be a mix of both positive and negative, but i’ve watched four awa artist pov’s and all of them did not have a great time vending. i love mystery bags, especially ones from artist alleys, that i’ve stopped spending on gatcha games! they’re much better to me because the bags usually write their general contents and are much better rates compared to big company gatcha games. even if i’ve never seen their artist’s work before, i’m always tempted to pick up their mystery bags!!

I did a small 3-day holiday expo right before Christmas. It was my first time at that event, and I knew it was a huge risk. My neighbors who had done it multiple years had really good things to say about the traffic. They swore in past years, they'd sold out of a bunch of things before Sunday. By Sunday, a lot of the vendors looked mad, and the ones who I talked to were struggling to make the booth fee (which was over $350.) One booth split their fee 7 ways, and some people weren't making their share back. The organizer tried to gaslight me by saying that 500 attendees on a Friday and mid-way through Saturday was enough for 53 vendors. I was blunt in the feedback paper she handed out. I doubt I was the meanest. I'm sorry to hear that your convention experience wasn't great, either. I love seeing you do well!!!

Ive been doing cons locally for years, back when they first started, I actually went to one of the first ever cons held here in my city, back in 1988...it was more about books, and comics, and vintage toys... now... they got so big, that they're starting to wind down, they're getting worse and worse, and more and more expensive. When I used to pull down anywhere from 400 to 700 a day, and on a three day weekend pull in anywhere from 1k to 1400, now, I'm lucking if I make my table back. I stopped doing most of them, I sell my art online, and I will occasionally do a small show here and there to get traffic to my store, or my online sales.

My partner vended there this year. She's done several years at this point and the con has gone from being one of her best events to barely breaking even. This year everyone seemed to have a hard time because of the venue itself, the harder to drive to location, how many booths there were and how spread out everything was. It was a weird con. Atlanta is great and has a lot of profitable cons! This one just went downhill for all vendors very drastically.

Sorry you had this experience - I've been going to AWA since 2016 and I've always known it to be an extremely popular, crowded con. I didn't go this year because I knew I was going to be strapped for cash so close to Christmas, and it seems like a lot of people felt the same based on the number of attendees this year. Also very weird to me that people weren't super nice to you - I'm from Georgia and usually our congoers are the sweetest, most talkative people you'll ever meet. It wouldn't surprise me if the number of Georgian attendees was much lower this year due to timing/location and the majority of people were from out of state.

I’m not an artist but just from the consumer side people tend to love bundles.

Interesting how much AWA has changed.... Thursdays were usually only at night, and only for Super Happy Fun Sale, no other events happening. It always felt crowded when it was held at Cobb Galleria so I'm glad they moved to the GA World Congress Center, but really shocked they moved the event from end of September to December (my birthday weekend, which SUCKED to do anything really wgen everyone was studying for finals, myself included, or not wanting to spend money unless it's for Christmas shopping)

I’m so sorry if I missed any information… and didn’t read the description box… so if you or if anyone happens to know the answer and comes across my comment, do you use your phone or camera when you vlog outside of your home? Like for example, the beginning of the video at the airport, do you just use your phone during times like these or do you only use a camera? Also, (again I’m sorry if you’ve already answered) I’d love to know how you’ve grown your confidence to film yourself around “the public” lol. I’m so sorry again if you’ve answered these questions. I’m super new to your channel, I stumbled on your videos around Sept 2024 and I fell in love with your page (and I love how your videos are done). It’s given me confidence and motivation to try and start my own little channel. I love how raw and real your videos are. It feels so natural and not “set up”, forced, or staged.

I wish you had a better experience. Sorry it wasn't up to par as it "should have" been. I've seen other artists have this same sentiment regarding AWA. It would seem as though certain conventions such as AWA expanded way too quickly (and probably had somewhat of an ego) for the type of convention that it always used to be. By that I mean, it feels like they believed they were a lot bigger and more popular than actual reality. Not that they aren't really popular, I'm sure AWA is known throughout the country as one of the most attended and/or talked about conventions (even moreso than Momocon), but they absolutely are NOT at the level of something like Anime Expo or DragonCon etc. Maybe they thought that by "going bigger" it would put them on the same tier as other really big cons, but imo they still have a lot of work to do (despite how long they've been around). AWA was my very first convention and the most memorable out of the many that I've attended since 2005 to present, but even though I was unfortunately unable to attend this year, from the MANY vlogs and experiences that I've heard from other attendees (both artists and regular con-goers), it doesn't seem like the AWA that I remember. I'm sure the new venue would have something to do with it (I'm biased because I thought the Cobb Galleria venue was peak back in the day), but also I feel like they lost a bit of that warm iconic "AWA-vibe" which made a lot people feel like it was their own hometown convention regardless if they were local or visiting from out of state. That vibe was their most consistent feature that kept people coming back every year. Once you lose that, it's much harder to gain the trust back. I really hope AWA improves for everyone's sake in the future. This is very unlike AWA tbh. But hopefully you will have better experiences in upcoming cons!

First of all, thank you for sharing your experiences and your knowledge about these events. May I suggest a few things as an anime lover, con attendee, an art teacher, and future customer? 1.) This is my first watching your video and yes, the entire time you were complaining and faking optimism when you were clearly stressed out about the sales. Rightfully so, since you paid a lot to be able to make sales, but you were not selling. I can sense your stress and that was stressing me out from behind the screen, miles away from you. 2.) I think your negative view of your experience is attracting more negativity. I don't mean this in a mean way, but if I was walking by and listening to you, I would stay away because I wouldn't want to be near someone who is clearly having a bad day. 3.) I understand that you are having a bad experience at this particular event and that would indeed drag your mood down. However, your nervous laughing was indicative of your frustrations, and that frustrated me, the viewer. 4.) With all this said, I appreciate your realness. I appreciate your expertise and knowledge and will go online to support you. I always try to support artists as an artist and art educator myself. 5.) Please don't lose hope. Instead, meditate and manifest good sales. I would've love to have seen your booth and your artworks and the items you were selling. Don't assume your videos are only watched by your followers and present your art and yourself in a lighter side. Save your frustrations for behind the camera because you never know who may be watching. 6.) Wishing you great luck in the future and a better sale. You are so brave to this on your own and putting your art out there like this. Sending you positive vibes and great fortune!

Never found myself so happy to be waitlisted for a convention. AWA used to be fantastic and with it being four days and new dates.. yeah. Not great. Also heard it'll be the same weekend as Holiday Matsuri next year which won't be good for AWA. Also really appreciative of the longer video! I worked on very last minute crafts for my convention in 3 days 💀

This con was a failure for a ton of artists at AWA this year. All the AA vlogs on this event were all over negative for the creators who tabled. They honestly really screwed themselves over for a ton of reasons. I think this is my 7th vlog I've watched on just this event and the only positives were the artists getting to meet some other artists and that everyone seemed to have the same experiences.

I'm a vendor at a lot of anime conventions. I got waitlisted for AWA and kind of feel like I dodged a bullet. I heard all the horror stories from my fellow vendors who were there. TBH I did Holiday Matsuri in Orlando the weekend after and it was pretty slow too. Fortunately I'm a local to that show so I only really had booth expense. They were super expensive this year so I'm appling to artist alley next year. If I get in, I get in. If I don't ,I dont.

I totally get it, when a con isn’t going as planned it is really difficult to be positive because we inevitably feel like it is our fault, especially if we had to bear a lot of expenses to go there. Don’t feel bad for that, it is totally legit. Just think about the many factors that bring to that situation, maybe the visitors in that area are more generic, maybe the position isn’t the most ideal, maybe there other areas of the con that keep people hostage too much

Hi, previous AWA attendee here. AWA was my first con and I've attended AWA for multiple years until my final attendance in 2019. AWA was a really great con back in the day, and I would recommend it to everyone I could. Now, I recommend NOT attending it. AWA started to drop in quality during the years leading up to 2019, but 2019 was the straw that broke the camels back. The badges went from $50 for all three days to $50 for ONLY SUNDAY. 3-day passes now go for $95. The con had always been well-managed, however nowadays it's normal for large scheduled events (like the costume contest) to be running over an hour late. 2019 was my final attendance and I simply refuse to go back. 2019 was so badly managed, that there were approximently 3 completely different con schedules. No, I'm not joking. There was a paper schedule that you got at the door, a mobile app schedule you could access on your phone, and a schedule posted on their website. All three were completely different. (I heard there was a 4th one, a second paper copy with ANOTHER different schedule, however I didn't see it personally). For example: the paper copy says that a "cosplay tips for beginners" panel starts at 2pm in room 355, the mobile app says the panel starts at 4pm in room 217, and the website wouldn't even have a "cosplay tips for beginners" listed on the schedule at all. I tried going to panels, however due to the immense scheduling error, either it was the wrong panel entirely or the panelist themselves didn't show up. It was BAD bad. Management aside, the attendees were different too. Anime had just started to become mainstream, and you could tell. There were so many normie party people who were clearly on drugs and/or drunk that year, and I'm sure now post-covid it has gotten worse. They would point and laugh at people, record people without their consent, and would blast music on portable speakers. I was waiting in line with someone blasting music next to me, and I politely asked them to turn it down slightly, and they turned it up more and told me to f*ck off. I actually left early that year and cried in my car. Cons aren't supposed to make you feel bad. Cons aren't supposed to feel like a waste of time and money. Something has gone horribly wrong with AWA and it hasn't gotten better since. My advice: small town cons are far better than AWA, by a long shot.

I heard a lot of my friends who went didn't know where the artist Alley was and got it confused with the vendors hall. AWA has been on the rocks for a few years now when it comes to staff not really caring or caring too much and being overly obnoxious. Last year the AA was extremely crowded, the con was extremely crowded, and there were several cases of roofies and also people stealing from the AA. I'd say wait a few years before trying again 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hey, I was at AWA at that time. Compared to all the previous AWA's, this one wasn't as great and it's probably because they're transitioning from being at the Waverly Hotel near Cumberland mall. It felt really small, but I'm sure it'll get better over time. I did happen to see your booth, but I was with friends so I didn't have time to stop by.
