I think the appeal is the emotional moments with Bulma and Vegeta, specially with Tsuru's passing. Extra weight there in a meta sense.

Exactly. Ajay is definitely correct about the shortcomings of this episode, but at the end of the day, this episode was the catharsis that the fandom has really been waiting for, and I’m fairly sure that’s gonna be what most people remember.

I don't give two shits about the passing of a voice actor, that's life, people die every day. What I want is to not waste my time watching an episode that was announced as "a very special episode reserved for Vegeta" by the episode writer.

personally, i think the struggle vegeta had against kid buu felt alot more sad than this one. but on overall, i felt like this was a nothing episode, just something they had to get out of the way so that they can get to the goku blanco vs el jireno fight that fucking freeza line in the intro, i cant even

The flat angles again, yeah they definitely lowered the quality of the episode quite a bit, but the choreography was good and animation was decent too. I totally disagree about the music placement, I thought it was spot on, and that's about it.

@Manganization
@Manganization 6 жыл бұрын
The music placement was odd as hell, simply because it was overused and felt like they were trying to cram as much OST as possible into the episode, and banking on them to gauge a bit of emotion when the actual narrative just didn't support it. If you want an example, this arcs' version of "desperate struggle" played during Goku vs Jiren (the one you hear during the Kefla vs Goku battle), but it was such a short scene, it made you wonder why they even bothered putting it in.

When you spend years learning about something, let’s say how movies are made. You learn how all the effects work and how death scenes work ect. Once you see all that you can no longer see movies the same way. While watching the movie all you can think about is the work that went in to create the scene and how fake it is. I feel like that’s how Ajay is with anime. He is able to look way deeper into episodes than we are. Majority will say this was a 10/10 episode amazing all around. But we don’t look at it critically. Ajay does, give him some slack and stop being so toxic. I did love this episode though lol.

Not a single punch thrown in this episode had any weight to it and if you think it was a 10/10 episode your standards are about as low as they come.
@Vargles
@Vargles 6 жыл бұрын
Did you just actually argue that scenario continuity and consistent art direction "aren't the point of the episode?" Jesus christ dragon ball fans really do have the lowest expectations possible. No wonder this series is destined to be forever rushed and mediocre, the fans are just fine with it lmao.
@Vargles
@Vargles 6 жыл бұрын
Yes but the problem is Jiren's and Goku's hits had no weight to them either. Felt like they were slapping each other around. The only hit that kinda felt heavy was Goku's UI hit and Jiren's blows on Goku before UI, that's it. Shit episode. An episodes quality is the sum of its parts not one aspect. If you wanna keep your standards low you do you. If you have to completely destroy continuity to make a dramatic impact you simply suck at your job.

I tend to agree with you on this one. The smoke was gorgeous, the artwork was quite polished and there was even some interesting footwork to look at. Other than that, not much in the episode actually moved. I can't shake the feeling that this episode was just a bullet point on a checklist in the grand scheme of things. "Eliminate Vegeta, bring back Ultra Instinct" and that kind of bugs me. I feel like some detailed action could have acted as a centerpiece of the episode to elevate some of the lackluster elements. Too bad.

That intro...damn 😂. Now onto the episode, i actually liked it, even thought, you're right, the direction wasn't really good and the execution as well. But for me, this is like, THE WAY A VEGETA EMOTIONAL EPISODE SHOULD BE WRITTEN. Ep 126 was a real disaster for me even thought it looked so good and damn those great storyboards, i feel that while in #126 the emotional moments felt cheap as if they were added to the script just because; here i actually feel that these scenes were actually meaningful. Hell, while in that episode the emotional conflict between Vegeta and Toppo felt really god damn stupid (making Vegeta look like a big hypocrite which made me wish for his defeat); in this one it's actually well handled and makes complete sense. On #126 Toppo was somehow antagonized by everyone including his own team mate just for throwing his ideals away to protect his universe which actually makes sense given the fact that defeat means erasure; at the same time we got a stupid scene with Vegeta babbling " you have no pride You loser" when in BoG he did the exact same thing (throwing away his pride) to protect his family (which was good development for him), then powered by the power of friendship and love Vegeta suddenly uses a suicide technique with the episode making a big deal about it as if that scene was like the second coming of Majin Vegeta vs Buu; and what happened next? He survived. On the contrary, in #128 the conflict makes sense because current Vegeta is full of emotion and cares a lot about his people while Jiren gives 0 fucks and doesn't care about anyone, Vegeta is able to trust in other people, which he demonstrated by giving energy to Goku and fighting first to give him more time to rest (and he does all of this while accepting that he failed); and Jiren thinks that all that kind of shit is worthless (which makes sense given his backstory). Funny how the good storyboarded episode is the one i hate and the not so good looking episode is the one i like, what are the odds.

I completely agree. As much as I appreciate the written content of the episode, instead of getting sucked into the moment I just kept thinking to myself, "I know I should be feeling something in this moment, but I don't" and now I know why that is. All of the ideas are here but none of them were presented very well. The story didn't make it past the board.

I think the animation/storyboard was really a letdown and it didn't really transfer the characters emotion for me. Yes I understood their attention behind it and all the flashbacks, but over all this was a pretty weak episode, and the fact that the composition/writing of the arc in general made this episode EXTREMELY predictable didn't help either. I guess some could argue as a standalone episode it wasn't that bad writing wise, but it definitely didn't make up for all the rest that made the episode honestly bad imo. Furthermore an episode should never be looked on as a standalone episode and more in the greater context of the whole story, which leads this writing to be really predictable and boring, though this isn't Yoshitakas fault. Hopefully next week will be better. Great breakdown as always

I think was slow paced to show the desperation of goku and vegeta and to show how they are out of stamina and cannot keep fighting at the pace we are used to. In my opinion, this is great writing. Also, i STRONGLY Disagree with the music being bad, i thought it was amazing. The animation for this episode was fairly good as well. Finally, i think this episode was just highlighting goku unlocking ultra instinct, and vegeta getting eliminated. Episode 129 should be really fast paced and animated greatly THANKS FOR READING

I always look forward to your reviews, because it shows me such a deeper world than I comprehend. You're totally right that upon first watching it, I thought it was pretty cool for Vegeta(even if he's just 'jobbing' again.) You're absolutely right about the composition and weak frames though. And though the art/animation tries to make up for it, upon review it makes it look weak. Like Toshio's script is trying to make up for all of the other lackluster elements and there's not much a script can do to cover up weak presentation. As far as it being overdone with Vegeta's flashbacks and monologues, you're right that context can make all the difference and I feel like it did here. Vegeta's really not trying to 'win' this fight, but rather Vegeta refuses to give up on himself, on his team and his universe. It's a really emotional way of looking at Vegeta's struggle and to see just how selfless he is. The Script tries to convey that with Vegeta's line: "Even if I can't win, Universe 7 will." And then seeing Vegeta fall and cry for failing to uphold his promise really hits the feels. The way his hair is falling back as he weakly extends his hand to give Kakarot his last remaining ki is the most graceful exit Vegeta could ever have, as it perfectly represents the proud Warrior Race he hails from as well as the trust he has in Kakarot. But also, that ki beam has more significant meaning than just Vegeta. It symbolizes that it's not just Vegeta, but everyone on Universe 7 believes in him and that belief itself is ki as well. At least that's how I saw it in the epic flashback(which was beautifully and wonderfully colored to show that all of these thoughts and their meaning is actually playing out on the subconscious level of Goku) It's a shame it'll be lost on everything else, but Toshio's Script did deliver. You can't take that away from him. Flawless Script.

I didn't dislike the episode but i didn't like it either, it was in the middle. However, I disagree slightly with your implications. I thought Sato's direction was worse than Yamamuro's storyboard. It was something i mentioned in your staff list video as well. I wasn't surprised that his storyboard this time around was just barely "okay". The choreography was decent but I feel as though Sato's direction didn't assist in any way either. Some previous episode's storyboards have been worse than this one but I didn't see any outcry, which doesn't make sense to me, probably because it's Yamamuro which many wrongly think must be perfect in every way. Well, he's human so he isn't going to be perfect. I wouldn't totally count Yamamuro out as returning to his ROF days, because we have seen what he can do in 126, which was his first Storyboard in a while and clearly it was good. The direction and the fact he was coming off a previous episode definitely had to have taken a toll. Also it just seems that this episode was one of the "alright lets just get this one over and make way for 129" production wise, so i doubt the creative ideas of them all weren't in gear. Even Toshio's script while decent, wasn't as good as he normally is. 129 looks decent so far! By the way, that intro made me giggle haha.

I really liked this episode. The fighting was very martial arts based, and it all felt a little more slowed down, which was nice, felt dramatic. The lack of depth I don't really mind for all the other awesome we got. And the direction I thought was fine.

The complete focus on the animation side of the product and less on the narrative side will make a casual viewer see you as cynical or having too high standards. Pea brains. I loved the episode, I understand your POV and actually agree with a lot of what you said regarding the inconsistencies in tone and the overall lack of polish with the storyboarding .The 129 preview looks stunning compared to some of what we got this week. I'm under the impression this episode is being so well received because it was a massive moment for Vegeta in particular, and we got some more context behind the motivations of Goku and Jiren. The polar ideologies they have regarding trust and what it means to gain power/fight for what you believe in

First off, I enjoy your content, and whatever your opinion is about super wont change my view of you and your channel. Secondly, I have a question... I, for one, did enjoy the episode to a degree but I was unable to see those repetitions and flaws that you were able to see the first time I saw the episode. (heck, you even compared it to the Res F arc). But after all that, I still think it's a pretty alright episode. So the question is that am I a fool for not noticing these things that you mentioned?

DBS is a weekly battle anime and not everyone is watching to be as critical as Ajay. You don't need to know why you enjoy something to enjoy it. If you do not find specific elements repetitive then that's like, your opinion man.

Honestly, the blandness might have been intentional. It gives this atmosphere of the energy petering out. Vegeta and Goku are tired. They have so little left and their repeating all these things because it's all they have left. It's all Vegeta can think about, the only thing keeping him going, driving him forward. When you factor in the preview for Ep129, it gives it this "calm-before-the-storm" feeling.

I'm not gonna lie, I was disappointed with this episode, it had some solid art and nice moments of animation, but overall when it ended I felt annoyed that nothing really happened after Vegeta got knocked out of the tournament. I mean I felt for Vegeta and liked that he got to fight right until the end, however, the way it was done could have been better and the flashbacks felt like what happened with Vegeta before he blew himself up again Fat Buu. And when Ultra Instinct finally showed up barely anything happened and the number of still shots right before the episode ended really annoyed me. But I'm already over it as the next episode looks much more interesting. Thanks for the breakdown dude!

To me , the times were there cool moments, like Goku going Ultra Instinct in this episode, give you a rush and pump you up for the next episode and makes me forget the bad moments in the episode itself. When I watch it again, it falls apart because you know whats already going to happen. Its sorta like the Cell arc for me, has a lot of cool moments but, when re watching you begin to see the cracks in quality with both art and story moments.

I agree with everything. I liked the hand-to-hand combat and martal arts, and there were some good scenes with Vegeta and Goku's flashbacks/reminiscing, but other than that it fell short for what was supposed to be Vegeta's sendoff. I guess I was just expecting more impact throughout the episode. It's kind of the opposite of episode 113 (I think), where the art and animation was questionable but everything else made up for it and turned the episode into something enjoyable.

Wouldn't the storyboarding issue have something to do with the fact that Yamamuro just storyboarded an episode that appeared just two weeks ago, kind of like how animating on an episode every week or two can seriously weaken animation, or am I just missing something here? I don't really have as firm of a grasp of cinematography as I truly want (I'm more of an actor than a director), so please forgive me if I sound really ignorant/stupid here.
@ImAlexGoodwin
@ImAlexGoodwin 6 жыл бұрын
That's entirely possible. It's also not something he's done terribly often which should also be taken into account, but Yamamuro is pretty fast. So time may not be as big of an issue as we think. It's hard to say really.
@ohhai10

Storyboards are done some months in advance. Scripts are done several months in advance. You can't start the Key Animation process if the storyboard isn't finished. The script for this episode was finished way back in September, so Yamamuro had plenty of time to finish this storyboard.

Oh, okay then, thanks for the info. Like I said, I only just got into learning about actually good cinematography, and that's not from actual learning, just what I hear off other anime KZbinrs, so I kind of still don't 100% grasp this stuff, yet.

Not necessarily DarkFalcon. While SB are done in advance, production issues can affect changes to the storyboard and KA. This episode was clearly one that was a simple "get Vegeta out, make UI show" episode. While some art was polished, the direction, script and SB all could of been stronger but weren't. Also, Yamamuro does a lot of things, and while he's faster than some others, time still takes its toll for him too. His creative approach was done for 126's storyboard to help Yashima, but it's clear time wasn't used or enough to make 128's layout just as fine. At least Yamamuro's skill in choreography assisted a bit. For his 4th SB, i thought it was "okay". Not the worst as some SB for previous episodes were much worse but definitely could of had more attention. His best by far was 126.

More creativity and thought was put on his previous SB in 126. However, Sato's direction in this episode was very poor. Even Yoshitaka's script was mediocre compared to what he's done before. I agree with Dennis, it just seems they tossed this episode to the side as far as "how much creativity should we put in this one?" goes. That's pretty much it. Judging by Yamamuro's SB in 126, he is more than capable of producing a fantastic SB.

Also, Resurrection F is still my 2nd favorite Dragon Ball movie. I like it more than Battle of Gods. I love both, don't get me wrong...but I enjoy F more. The argument that "after time has passed, you will be able to see problems with it" doesn't make much sense to me. My opinions on things I enjoy watching rarely ever change. The only time that my opinion on a TV show/movie has changed with time is Attack of the Clones, since I used to love that movie but now I think it kind of sucks. But everything else has pretty much stayed the same. That might be stubbornness on my part, but I can promise you that 5 years from now, I'll still love this episode. So yeah, I don't get the "your opinion will change over time" argument. But again this is entirely subjective, and I respect your opinion.
