ngl Eren's character is so hard to explain yet makes so much sense at the same time. I don't condone genocide or see Eren as a hero of any sorts, but seeing Eren being enslaved by fate and being so conflicted about what he wants to do makes me feel bad for him, since at the end of the day no one is a winner in the world of aot.

you do realise saying you don't condone genocide and going against eren is hypocracy because if eren did nothing, the rest of the world would have genocided paradis and probably killed most eldians. people need to understand that aot is a genocide or be genocided world. and none of that 80% bs, because then the 20% will retaliate and genocide paradis back (LIKE THEY DID IN THE END OF THE MANGA)

@@folubtw I don't really think Eldians are "framed" evil. Eldians' atrocities have some truth to it. And in this real world, if a race of people appeared with Titan powers, that too with the threat of millions of relatively gigantic titans destroying the world, we as normal humans would rightly want to eliminate those threats. No one side is more evil than the other

@@folubtw Pretty sure the number of "truly innocent" people that died from the rumbling is _way_ bigger than the entire population of Paradis. Generalizing parts of the world into ones that are "truly evil" like that also makes little sense in a story where "there were no devils, everyone is the same" is a point that's been hammered in again and again. Edit: Also, you can be against both the genocide of Paradis and the genocide of everyone _but_ Paradis. A proper solution being hard to find doesn't mean it is actually a binary position.

I can feel Eren's dissapointment tbh. Eren spent his whole life being confined in the walls, thinking that to see all the things written in Armin's book is just another wet dream, but then he discovers that majority of the world still lives outside of the walls, able to see these things and many more whenever they want, not only that, but they also condemned the people of paradis to be exterminated, living like birds trapped in a cage. However, even so, no one can bare the burden of massacring the billions of people that lived beyond the walls, and to also kill millions of innocents that didn't have anything to do with the affair. This causes Eren's immense internal conflict, breaking him down to bits inside, no wonder he was so depressed in the majority of season 4

One thing that I love so much about Erens character is how he starts off as a protagonist with a pretty surface level anime motivation and as he transitions into an antagonist his motivations as well as the complexity of the character grow with the show. it’s almost like seasons 1-3 were his backstory in a sense. Most pro tags or antags follow a specific route and only change at the end of their character arc but I love that Eren has a very fluid constantly changing character arc that roadmaps who he is. Its writing like that as well as the pacing that I think really helps AOT keep you on you’re toes the whole time. when you sit down to watch it a second time all the conclusions seem logical and all the twists are in front of you’re face the whole time but it’s the way isayama reveals things that make it worth while and totally shock you.

Probably the biggest thing we can get out of this episode is that Eren isn't an emotionally stunted psychopath who doesn't care about the destruction he leaves behind in his way. The truth is he does care which makes it even worse for him. We already know just how much guilt Reiner carried for all the horrible things he did but that's nothing compared to what Eren's doing right now. What's even more horrifying is the implication that Eren wanted to do the Rumbling not just for the sake of Eldia or his friends but for reasons that are far more selfish. He was disappointed that the world was filled with people who hated his kind. Hell, the very fact that humanity exists outside the walls goes against his childhood dream of an empty world. Life beyond the walls was nothing like the world he had dreamed of, the one he had envisioned through Armin's book. Through the rumbling, he was able to achieve his childhood dream of being free but not without a cost. Eren has become so broken inside that he can't even enjoy the freedom that he so desperately yearned for all this time. So much so that he had to regress into a childlike state, clouded by judgement and completely oblivious to the horrors below him, to truly appreciate it. He was never able to accept the world he grew up in and thus his innocent dream mutated into something far more twisted and horrifying and the result is what we witnessed in front of our screens.

Eldians inside walls are like pigs waiting to be slaughtered, something that was shown during history of first titan. AoT is tragic story itself, since Paradis Island would've been destroyed if they do, destroyed if they don't. The entire world couldn't forgive the slaughter the eldians caused in the long past, even if the king in the past self exiled himself and the people he had left to the island, away from prying eyes. It's a story of neverending hate, something that we can see even to this day.

"What's even more horrifying is the implication that Eren wanted to do the Rumbling not just for the sake of Eldia or his friends but for reasons that are far more selfish" This reminds me of the conversation Erwin has with Darius Zackly in season 3. Both men state that even though they knew it was conceited and selfish, they both willingly carried out the Coup D'état for personal reasons, regardless of how it would affect humanity. Not to mention the government/nobles who were also much more concerned with themselves then the rest of humanity. I think this is actually a fairly common mindset throughout the series for lots of characters and groups. Would it be a stretch to say Marley is acting out of self interest, attacking Paradis in the first place and risking the rumbling that would destroy all countries and people around the world, to gain the titan powers for themselves?

In the freedom scene, Eren had believed that he had finally achieved true freedom, the freedom that he’d been trying to achieve for so long. In the form of a child, his hands are stretched out like a bird that's flying over the clouds, free from anything holding him down. But sadly, it was merely a facade. The "clouds" that Eren is soaring over is just Titan smoke from the colossal titans that are destroying everything below him while the true clouds are above him, almost as if he was stuck between heaven and hell. Eren had created this illusion for himself to escape what reality truly is. Eren was a slave to his ideology of freedom, he had become what he hated the most, a slave. And the way Isayam depicted him as a child is perfect because it portrays the childlike state that he is in during this panel, his childish version of freedom coming to life.

What really got me was at the end of the special when Armin asks Eren how he will be free once they drag him out of the titan. I predict that his freedom is being liberated from carrying the burden of taking the action of mass genocide, while also having achieved what he wanted his entire life. Eliminating the titans, the enemies on the other side of the sea. I could not take my eyes off of my monitor throughout the entire special. It brought so many intriguing philosophical moments that really made me think about a clear cut solution to resolving hatred in the world. Unfortunately, Eren is the monster that humanity’s selfish actions manifested, and it came to haunt them back, with the innocent being caught in the crossfire.

People need to realize that every holder of the attack titan from start to finish was already pre determined by the founding titan Ymir. Essentially the attack titan was made out of the nine to act as a backdoor for Ymir to escape her prison and free the Eldian race from the power of the titans. Erens whole character is surrounded by his sheer to obtaining freedom for himself and the rest of the eldian race. Same as to why Grisha started the restorationists and fed himself to Eren. Same as Eren Kruger who motivated Grisha to carry on with the mission of freeing Eldia. It is the reason why Eren cannot explain why he does what he does to his friends, because its ALL PRE-MADE for Eren to fulfill by the founder Ymir. Why is it called “To You two thousand years from now”? Because those memories and hallucinations that Eren began to experience as an early child were meant for HIM two thousand years later. The same reason why he motivated Grisha to murder the Reiss family, cause whilst all the other eight titans submit to King Fritz, Ymir still chose the path of true freedom.All of the events are a strategic plan for Ymir to break free from her prison and the worst part is Eren soon becomes aware but knows the only way to stop himself is to have another one kill him.
@keithfilibeck2390
@keithfilibeck2390 Жыл бұрын
yes, finally someone who gets it, its all deterministic, Ymir, while a victim, perpetuates this insanity on the future to escape, Eren has cognitive dissonance because he both wants this, and doesn't, the thought of killing so many disgust and terrifies him, but his childish desires also push him forward, simply because he knows the future and knows its unstoppable, he justifies why he has to do it, but in reality he has no will in it, Ymir makes it so.
@amanofnoreputation2164
@amanofnoreputation2164 Жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. The being the titan power came from is beyond understanding. Maybe it chose Eren, maybe it didn't. If it did, we are not privy to it's criteria for such a choice. If Ymir wanted a backdoor, then the convoluted from it took is no less inscrutable. Was there really no other way to achieve the same end?

@@amanofnoreputation2164 Eren is like how Neo is in the matrix. Everyone is in the matrix, just like everyone is Eldian, however only one does not submit to King Fritz and the walls and thats Eren, a and just like Neo did when rejecting the matrix. Ymir knew that a part of her wanted to be free from the prison, but still gave submission to King Fritz. Thats why all Eldians fell under the oppression of the world. Like how theyd submit to King Frtiz. However, like before said, a small percentage of that population rejected the norms of being a submitting and instead an attacking Eldian and that was Eren and his team.l

Yeah I agree.. what i think people are missing is that eren's idea of "freedom" actually changes. It basically starts off as freedom from the walls, then to freedom from the race that wants to kill all the island devils then to freedom from the fate he has seen. Ultimately he realizes he's a slave in all three scenarios. Its why you see him try convince himself otherwise "I am free. Whatever I do. Whatever I choose. I do it out of my own free will". Overtime he becomes less and less convinced. Why his mental health just erodes into him being unable to fight his fate anymore. Why we see him say "tatakae" so often. Rather than fight for the rumbling(as most see it as) he's trying to fight his fate mentally. Although you could argue Ymir chose Eren because of his characteristics which is basically his willingness to as he puts it "Keep moving forward".

@@red.4712 Seriously? The pacing is too rushed from 135 to 139, like superfast-until-you-die type of pacing or Michael Bay movie type of pacing. The plot twist of Ymir loved King Fritz is odd, don't get me started about "Ymir has Stockholm Syndrome" take, if you're not in science/medical background same as I do, shut up. Eren's character development is odd at the end, Armin's "Thank You" line is offensive as that legitimately glorifying genocide (that's what got Isayama and Kawakubo in trouble in the first place), Mikasa being the actual chosen one is an odd choice despite none foreshadowing her as that, Eren controlled past Dina to kill Carla is legitimately breaking the rules (mythos) of the story, none of the Alliance suffered any consequences rather it's the future Eldians who became the target of extinction. If that is considered good, then I can say any fiction that's known to have bad parts AKA Game of Thrones, I bet you or anyone would dickride it until the end of time. This special Reiner suggested exactly that, at which Eren immediately brought them to the paths to let them know that they can take him down if they wish. So either his friends save the world and they stop being hated, or Eren ends everyone besides his friends so there's no one left to hate them. What i find interesting about Eren is that he's conscious he's the most chained out of everybody, he knows he cannot break those chains and yet he still tries. His desire for freedom is so strong it may aswell be perceived as an obsession, and this useless fight with the inevitable really shows the difference between him and the regular slaves. The true slave accepts his fate and follows the orders accordingly while eren is doing the exact opposite, regardless of Eren being chained he is definitely not a true slave.

I don't know why people forget that the world outside the walls were advancing pretty quickly and headed for for advanced weapon technology. And Marley was always under pseudo threat from eldians and were 100% sure about wiping them off when they had powers. And considering the show is based around ww2 then just think if they developed till this point of time with extremely powerful technology we currently have. Then there would be no use of rumbling and could be destroyed by nukes or ICBM's and high altitude flying jets or drones of Kamikaze drones. Definitely then they would have no fear of Rumbling and wiped off Eldia, as they were pretty sure about that. As much as we dont like or hate Eren , I don't think anything else would've saved Eldia, no amounts of talks could bring about peace ever. Forget about anime think about this current world we live in...nothing is permanently solved via any laws or treaties with all of us being 100% humans. Eren really has to be the most tragic MC in all of fiction. At the ripe age of 15, going through what he went through from, titans invading, his mom getting eaten, getting eaten himself, turning into a titan, betrayed by reiner a man he saw as his hero/brother, watching people he cared about being killed and wiped out, learning the truth about his father, and getting future memories of what he has to do in order to save his home and people, has to do a toll in a child’s brain like that because the brain is not even fully developed at that time. By time the time we see him in season 4 at 19(not even a full adult) he is just a young man who gave up on trying to change anything because there is nothing he can do change his fate. Such a sad child. I don’t even see a monster, just a broken, traumatized boy where nothing truly good happened in all of the days of living aside from making friends. Interesting how isayama says that Eren is a reflection of himself and I can see why. Isayama and Eren both yearn to be FREE🥲 but the cost to reach their individual freedoms took something away from them.

It's tragically ironic: the character who wants nothing more than to be free, is in the end nothing more than a slave to fate. Eren's idea of "freedom" is childish in nature, very black and white, and he takes out his anger and disappointment on the rest of the world by trampling them underfoot. Saving Paradis or his friends isn't the reason for doing this: it's the perfectly pre-made excuse. He's convinced himself there is no other way because he literally cannot see it since his path has been predetermined for 2000 years. It makes characters like Gaby even more poignant in comparison, because they broke free of the very cycle Eren is fighting against without any of the measures he is taking.

That's because they haven't seen the future. The fact if the outside world survives, Eldia will eventually be destroyed. The only silver lining being some eldians will survive beyond the wall, even if as second class citizens. Gaby and Falco are still innocent and can act accordingly. Eren, presumably, has seen the various outcomes. Think of Dr Strange seeing 14 million futures in Infinity War. Eren, like Dr Strange, deduced there was only 1 way. The fact that way happens to make Erens dreams come true is a welcome bonus for him.

@@adem34hz58 Look at real life dude. The Americans took out the Afghanistan government. Then what happened? Did things get resolved? NO! The Afghan people realised a foreign power had installed a puppet regime over them. So they resisted. They waged guirella warfare. After 20 years of struggle, the weak Afghans managed to kick out the mighty Americans from their country and they restored their previous Government. (The government that was opposed to the US). Eren only has 13 years to live. If he destroys the Marley government, then the Marleyans will know Eldia has once again taken over them and installed a puppet. That will be unacceptable and they will fight back for their freedom via guirella warfare. In order to avoid the enemy government coming back to power, Eren and Paradis will constantly have to support the new Marley government. They will have to sort of occupy Marley for DECADES. Eren doesn't have decades to live. This "solution" just means kicking the can down the road for future Eldian leaders to deal with. And what happens when another King Fritz type of person comes to power? Once again, the Eldians will abandon the Marley occupation then we are back to square 1. Eren has a short time left to live. He wants a permanent solution that will remove the threat of foreign imposed genocide upon Paradis. He has no solution to stop infighting.... be he can ensure Eldians will survive and only ever be killed by each other... instead of by outsiders. That is exactly what Eren did. @HeavyReign12
@HeavyReign12 Жыл бұрын
I wish I could peer into the mind of Hajime Isayama, because you're absolutely correct. He seems so "normal" in interviews. Anyone familiar with the concept of what the Faustian spirit really means and Spengler's writings can immediately identify it in AoT. I don't think a Japanese man is exclusively the only one who could write a character like this, but he is the only one capable/allowed to write a character like this. A Western man could write a character like this but it would immediately be shot down in a large public setting because it would be understood as racism/nationalism/colonialism. I've heard the ending sort of drops the ball. I haven't read it, but either way I am infinitely thankful for the existence of AoT. Eren feels scarily relatable because of my views, I won't even hide it. Sure I'm Satan in some people's views, and people think you feel a certain way because you just want to be an edge lord. Maybe subconsciously that's it, but I don't think so. I've struggled to make sense of the discrepancies between the cruelty of nature and the universe's cold indifference and the fairy tail that this world pushes on me as the moral good. All while telling me that there is no moral good, that we choose our own. So am I free to be evil? To stop evil are you not engaging in shared selfishness of self preservation? Quite literally I think we are beginning to look "beyond good and evil." It has torn my soul in two, I have feet in both camps. I openly admit the concerns I have for the replacement of European people in Europe. The demographic trends are not looking good. The condemnation of entire eras and civilizations built by people I owe my existence to. Their only usefulness is when they're made to apologize for the ills of the world. It makes me sick to my stomach. If there is no implicit moral good for us to take part in, who is anyone to tell me I am wrong? So I see Eren, he is the character you least want to relate to and I do. Full heartedly. While still recognizing the flaws in his and my own philosophy. The childlike anger I share that has eroded me emotionally, and pushed people away. I have hope that I will step into it completely and be free of any anger towards me by forgetting the rest of the world and only caring about what those important to me think of me. So I'm sure if anyone reads this they will likely find my view silly/not worth engaging with. Well that's why AoT is so valuable to me. Because even if the message of the story is that I am wrong, it still lets me know that I am not alone. And that means a lot to me as I try to work out my own feelings towards things. That I am still human.

The episode also brings into light that while Eren greatly desires freedom, he cannot get it until he's dead. Say if he were to live/survive, he still wouldn't be free anyway. He is almost like Ymir in that sense. Ymir, while able to become more powerful than King Fritz, still submitted to him because since she's been a slave all her life, all she knows is this slave mindset. She was never going to be free even though she was destined to have such power. Eren lived a simple life within the walls, but he desired freedom outside of the walls, but little did he know that Marley and other nations were at war and there was still a "Titan War". Even though he was destined or fated to have the power of a titan, there was still a whole complex historical problem between marleyans and eldians that runs so deep that the only way to stop the conflict was the euthenization plan (killing every single eldian, including those on paradis island), which eren, who wanted to rid the world of titans, did not want to do and yet start the rumbling. The only way to stop all this was to kill him, which was hinted at when he had this monologue about the scouts having the freedom to stop him and him having the freedom to continue the rumbling. He was never going to be free (from his fate), until he dies. At least that's my theory for now.

From when Zeke appears so menacingly and Eren says "looks like we want the same thing, a decisive battle" it's balls to the wall action up to the greatest reveal in what's in the basement. It's unbelievable. But I guess with all that it has to be tied with s4 parts 2 and 3 because they are that good lmao. What a show

"man is free at the instant he wants to be' - bullshit. Eren became a slave to the pursuit of wanting to be free. Freedom is a state of mind. Eren was obsessed with obtaining freedom.

Eren is not so difficult as people want him to be . He set this future in stone himself . He wants to give his friends long lifes and he wants to destroy the world himself too. He is a slave to his nature . And freedom

Nah makes sense to me, it's like the priest in vinland saga. His view on love is the same as eren's on freedom. If you're dead you aren't suffering and complaining.

I definitely see what you’re going for but I have a slightly different take. When Eren kissed Historia’s hand he gained the memories of the future, though not the full thing as we see him get ambushed in season 4 to his surprise, and he clearly tried to differentiate from this path but the actions he took to try to stop it lead to it. So at this point he has stopped resisting and agonisingly accepted the future. He knows what he’s doing is horrific but can’t do anything to stop it because the future is set in stone.

When the topic of The Rumbling comes up and, specifically, whether or not you support his decision, I find that the question shouldn't be "Is this the right thing to do?" - rather, "Are you surprised?" From his perspective, his conflict will end with either Paradis' end or the end of the rest of the world (as he points out when he addresses the Subjects of Ymir). There are only those two outcomes, and he - and he, alone - has the means to bring about one of them. When the rest of the world wants you dead, and they have made it abundantly clear that they will not rest until you are, are you surprised when they use everything they have against you?

I feel like one fact that many people frustratingly miss is that Eren never changes. He was never a good person, he was never changed by the death of his mother. He was always a bad person, which was the entire point of showing him killing Mikasa’s captors as a child. He always wanted to exact revenge on the people who had caused him suffering, it’s just that it changed from titans, to Marleyans, to everyone outside the walls. He took his quest for revenge so far that he eventually destroys the outside world that he wanted to one day see. You aren’t supposed to root for him, he’s not a good person, but he’s a great character.

As the Attack Titan, Eren bears the true will of the founder Ymir, the will that frees the pigs from the pigpen before she even got the Power, the same will that freed her from the subjugation of the royal Fritz blood. It's not just Eren's will at play, it's also the will of the founder Ymir that desires the end of races in attempt to end oppression once and for all.

its Determinism/Fatalism, Eren got to see the script but doesn't have an eraser, all he can do it follow along, even his own motives and actions, he wants to stray from, but like Dr. Manhattan, its "already happened" in the future. nothing can stop it.
