Very interesting series, I both love and hate it, though what I am fairly certain of is that Alucard is the best character within it pretty much & Sara is the second best. Integra...On a fence on that one. That's my take on it anyways. As for the rest of the characters and series, to be blunt, pretty much a bloody mess, pun not intended. From the state, to the war, to the factions and the likes. Bloody mess. The Vatican might've been better off not being a part of it as well since they were pretty much practically not there and only had the purpose of getting in the way of and weakening Alucard for the actual main antagonist, Hypocrisy and fanatacism pretty much, that faction was. They just insert themselves whenever the plot calls them.
