I believe this episode was supposed to be a backstory of Iroh and his battle at Ba Sing Se years ago, a flashback episode of his 600 day seige of the wall, and the loss of his son. Mako, Irohs voice actor was really sick at this point, on his deathbed, and could only do the couple scenes, so they added all the other little "tales of Ba Sing Se" to fill the episode. The song at the end of Irohs tale was supposedly one of the last recordings of Mako.

Another fact, the girl in pink outfit in "tale of aang" that lose her cat (fluffykins) was actually a "make a wish" kid. Her wish actually to go to the studio to meet cast and crews. But the creators offered to draw her and gave her a line. The character drawn to look like her, even the outfit too.

at the end of the video when you ask why he would sing the same song twice this episode, they did it not only to introduce the song in a fun way before you get hit with the big emotions on the second time but i like to think that they showed him singing the song to this kid to imply that this was probably the lullaby that he would sing to his own son when he was little. If true, this also adds another level of pain to the moment when he sings it at the picknick

Avatar Extras The Tales of Ba Sing Se This is the only Avatar episode that is made up of several "shorts" and they are all written by members of the Avatar crew. The stones used on Toph are pumice stones and Pumice stones are used to soften and clean feet. 7:19 Cabbage Count: 4 Pause at 8:23, Sign on the door reads, “Five-Seven-Five Society” they specialize in haiku writing. A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry in which the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. The teacher’s name is Macmu - Ling and her name was inspired by the last name of the writer for this short (MacMullan = Macmu-Ling). This is the first time we've seen Zuko firebend in more than 4 episodes and the Fire Light Fountain is pretty much the most romantic place in all of Ba Sing Se. The cats that chase Momo are pygmy pumas. Pygmy pumas are a smaller, sleeker version of pumas bred for compact city living. They're extremely dangerous when provoked but they're otherwise a very cute carnivore. They are also often trapped and sold in Ba Sing Se. The Tale of Iroh (since this segment is *SOOO GOOD* it deserves it’s own section) Throughout the day Iroh progressively helps boys (from very young to older ages) throughout the day, mirroring how his own son was supposed to age throughout his life (starting with a small child, then a group of young boys, then finally a young adult). In a way, he celebrates his son’s short life by helping/trying to be the father figure he was meant to be to the people he’s met. It’s also the commoners of Ba Sing Se, the very city that HE besieged many years ago (the very city where his son died during the attack). But he doesn’t blame them as he believes that he had a bigger hand in the loss of his son. Iroh just helping anyone and everyone is what he does best. Which makes him saying “if only I could’ve helped you” to his son even more heartbreaking. The original voice actor for Iroh, famed legend Mako Iwamatsu, died July 21, 2006 (age 72) after a brief period of suffering from esophageal cancer. He was able to voice all of his lines for this season before his passing and even provided his voice while bedridden including this song. The calligraphy on Lu Ten’s picture translates to: "General Iroh, I will see you again when victory is obtained. Your loyal son, Lu Ten". When Lu Ten died, and as you saw in a flashback during the episode “Bitter Work”, he was buried under a tree on a hill in the fire nation. Iroh finds a similar place in Ba Sing Se to honor his son. Finally, Melon, it’s okay. We all felt it (and cried) when it came to this episode (particularly this segment) . It is arguably some of the best writing that television has produced and is, at least from my viewpoint, very human. I still lose it when this segment is played. Warning: Appa’s lost days…you're going to need some tissues

That moment at the end of the Tale of Iroh is one of those moments that just can instantly bring even the hardest to tears. I have watched that episode dozens of times and even knowing exactly what is going to happen I still break every time without fail. I couldn't trust someone who didn't have a reaction to that moment in Iroh's Tale. It has extra punch because Mako, the voice actor who did Iroh died after recording this season.
