Can we talk about how Toph was basically playing earthbending tug-of-war with a powerful ancient spirit and the rope was a *whole-ass giant library???* Tragic as the episode is, it's an amazing display of just the sheer power she has.

So it is implied several times that Appa can perfectly understand human speech. It is probably part of the spiritual bond the Sky Bison have with their Air nomads. So Appa looks interested in what Tooh has to say when she explains how she sees the world. Appa genuinely wants to get to know his companions better and he wants to bond with Toph. It is so cute! Makes the kidnapping much more tragic.

What I love about this episode is what's underlying heartbreak of Aang losing Appa. Appa isn't just his best friend but also one of the last things he has left of his people. We never really get to see Aang grieve the airbender genocide and I think that's partly because he always tried to see the bright side of his situation ' At least I have you, Appa '. So having Appa taken from him removes the thing he was leaning on to cope with the loss of everything he's ever known. The scene with Katara comforting him mirrors almost exactly when he saw Monk Gyatso's skeleton. Some people gloss over Aang's pain because he tries to be an optimist and copes with his losses well. But this is one episode where Aang gets to let out his pain and anger.

What really gets me is what katara said both earlier in the desert, and the last time Aang went avatar state. "Seeing you in that much rage and pain is scary. I'm not coming tomorrow." and in the desert when Aang Screams at her Katara just numbly says "Trying to keep everyone together." And here she just takes his hand. Knowing that he needs her.

The Library 0:49 these are singing prairie dogs and are a big tourist attraction on the Golden Prairie in the Earth Kingdom. 1:40 The Misty Palms Oasis is a cantina built atop an underground iceberg. The Earth Kingdom Desert is known as the Si Wong Desert. The Si Wong Desert has the hottest, driest climate of anywhere in the Avatar world. Si Wong literally means "Desert of the Dead". Wan Shi Tong’s library was brought over from the Spirit World thousands of years ago. The foxes (the Knowledge Seekers) search the world for information that they bring back to the library. They are also great library assistants. 5:54 yep and, to ensure that nobody would use information against the fire nation, he burned all the information on them. The date of the darkest day of fire nation history was the 19th day, of the 7th month of the cultivate rule dragon year. According to the chart, the solar eclipse is on the 1st day of the 8th month of the superior military monkey year. Though for him, losing Appa was losing one of the last connections that he had to his culture and his people. When he goes into the Avatar state at the end of the episode, he is channeling the voices of ALL the avatars before him (including his pain) as each Avatar shares a DEEP connection with their animal guides. The large rock in the middle of the desert is known as the Si Wong Rock and Sandbender lore claims that the Si Wong Rock was dropped from the sky by the gods to prove their power. Wan Shi Tong doesn't really care about the affairs of humans or sides of war. He sees war as just senseless violence and he cares only about knowledge. Ironically Sokka's lie about getting knowledge for knowledge's sake basically defines Wan Shi Tong's character. If we look at real history a lot of wars cost losses of knowledge or at least preventing the spread of knowledge. Wan Shi Tong views any use of knowledge to wage war as evil regardless of sides.

Okay here's the deal about cactus water. Yes there is water in cactus, but not that much and nowhere near enough for crossing a desert. At best you can cut the cactus up and suck on it for water, but that's only in extreme cases and the cactus water takes like crap. It won't make you high though.

So i know that there is some discussionof pacing in the library episode. Many people think that the events should be rearranged. The sequence where Sokka and Aang such for the date of the next eclipse grinds the pacing to a halt. People think it should be moved later to give the climax more punch. I disagree. This is Sokka’s episode to have agency and decide what happens. He chooses to stay and Aang agrees. They grt the information they want but at an unknown heavy price. Appa is stolen because Sokka turned back. It was a trade off. I love that Sokka’s choice has deviating consequences. You need stakes in a story. It could have been paced way better but i like the order of events.

The thing about the title "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is its not exactly true. Like the badger moles taught Oma and She who became the first HUMAN earthbenders, the badger moles were the first earthbenders. Appa is a skybison, the first Airbenders, so Aang isn't alone in that regard, but all of the other air nomads are dead, and appa is the last remnant of that time and to Aang the last remnant of his peoples. Without Appa, Sang is truely and completely cut off from his people, he is completely alone.

Can we talk about Katara for a second, she literally stood in front of this force of nature, that literally could have done ANYTHING because as we know Aang doesn't have control over the Avatar State yet, it could have knocked her against a rock and gave her a concussion or worse, but she stood her ground, walked right into it and grabbed Aang's hand refusing to let go until he calmed down. THAT is STRENGTH and not just physical strength, its strength of CHARACTER. I said before how in the episodes were Katara struggled with her own insecurites, we needed to see those, because now we can really see the trust that exists here between them and how much she cares about him. Facing her own insecurites, her own demons and this is the result. She can literally stand hand in hand with the Avatar.
