It's the start of the longest arc in DB, the Red Ruban Army. Some people find it too long, but I like it because of the travel, and also because toward the end it gets really intense with real threats for Goku.

I think it probably only feels long because a lot of people forget that back in the original series, the heroes could not fly across the world in a couple hours. Getting places took time. And that's exactly what made it feel like a real journey.

When it comes to quest-based stories, protagonists are usually aided by a group of friends. But i always liked it when the protagonist is on his own. So when Goku starts this journey by himself, and later on Kid Gohan doing survival training for the Saiyan battle, I was always pumped for it.

I really wish Akira Toriyama kept the world of DragonBall as consistent as it was here. There were so many characters, locations, techniques, etc. that were tossed to the wayside or just written into obsolescence. The animal people that appear alongside humans have rarely appeared in Z, and almost never show up in games except as cheering background sprites. And the only Dino the series ever cares to remember is the one that chased kid Gohan.

It’s not the same pterodactyl. I’d have to double check if this one is filler or not, but Goku genuinely killed the first pterosaur, his first kill in all the series. If canon, Goku was out here putting whole families on shirts

Actually, the Pterodactyl from episode 1 is dead. Goku killed it. This is a different creature (1 is called a Gira, multiple are called Giras. They're filler from the anime and entirely based on Monster Beast Giren)

I don’t think Goku canonically ever figured out that Jackie Chun was, in fact, Roshi, although I do know that in the movie “The World’s Strongest” he does appear to know about Roshi’s win.

Honestly I don’t get why people want you to skip the filler. DBZ’s filler sucks but OG DB’s filler is pretty high quality and difficult to tell it’s even filler. It’s definitely worth watching if you’re not in a rush to finish the series.

It's strange to me when shounen anime that ran continuously non stop for years are referred to in seasons. These usually ran all year round with a couple one week breaks for holidays and don't really fit the 13/26/50 episode season model. The trend is dying nowadays though. DB in particular managed to avoid having extensive filler until DBZ. This episode and the next few were filler. The rabbit one wasn't. That one was paying off a joke Toriyama set up with Bulma wearing the playboy bunny costume.

This episode never made sense to me. The damn is generations old, yet they make it sound like its responsible for the water shortage. They act like the damn can't be broke because it was made with the marry go round gum, yet he already knew it could be broken by goku if by no one else.

Hey Melon. The only filler that's IMO a must watch is in final arc because in manga/ canon anime you don't see the training with Mr. Popo and Kami. Therefore Goku's new abilities in last tournament of dragonball doesn't have a previous training we could see. But in the filler episodes (127-132) it is all covered, including a young Roshi!

Next ep is the best filler of DB for me, since you got acquainted with general Red in a better manner than in the manga: it was really cool how he got rid of Pilaf easily, the former "villain", just like that. It showed how the Red Ruban Army was next level, more dangerous than Pilaf.
