Jeremy Brett nails it every single time. It is almost unbelievable how good he was.

This is certainly one of the best adaptions in this series. Acting, cast, plot, all is amazing. Brett is, naturally, everyone's hero (at least he's mine), but I just realized what a brilliant Lestrade we are given by Jeavons.

Brett has infectious smile. Should I take the 7 percent solution to give up Holmes-Brett addiction? The way he secretly puts the letter back in box and lights a cigarette non chalantly when Hope finds a letter and that secret infectious smile meant in the end for lady Hilda is priceless. I'll never tell you how much I love you Holmes. We too have our own secrets!!!!

Jeremy Brett brings Sir Arthur's Sherlock Holmes to life. No other actor ever achieved this. Jeremy Brett does not imitate Holmes. He is Holmes as described by Sir Arthur! Wonderful! Just wonderful!
@Bringiton5138 жыл бұрын
+Walter-Jörg Langbein So true. I have read the Sherlock Holmes books, the original newspaper stories, about 10 times and I cannot find anything different between how Jeremy is portraying Holmes in these episodes and the Holmes which is in the stories themselves. I just wasn't able to imagine how someone could possibly be this good before I found these episodes. Jeremy was a genius. No doubt and have studied Holmes character inside and out.
@celticpoet218 жыл бұрын
for sure! being a method actor, Jeremy turned all that was Holmes into his bible basically. he actually learned how to smoke a pipe as the cherry on top.
@carlosmurray26478 жыл бұрын
No, Jeremy was simply being himself, as he had the same characteristics of Holmes, who was based on the real life Doctor Joseph Bell, Sir Arthur created two characters out of Dr. bell.

Jeremy was not a method actor, he was a natural Actor, there is a vast difference, method Actors are cheap imitators.

This proves to me that Mr. Holmes' heart is not "cold" as Dr. Watson describes of him at times. I love how he is so completely brilliant as to return the letter to his box and cover the whole thing over, all to keep this a happy home. What a romantic deep deep down! :-D Gotta love the complexity of this character. Feels like Sherlock Holmes really lived, doesn't it?

Damn, this show was so good, it´s a timeless masterpiece thaks to the fact that the makers didn´t rely on any trendy, stylish bric-a-brac & special effects, but made it plain, straightforward & as simple as possible. This is a blessing in a time of short-lived trends. The main actors (Brett, Burke, Hardwicke) were excellent, and the guest stars were very good, too. You can still enjoy it today, almost 30 years after it was first released. And I´m sure ppl will be watching it in 100 years, too.

This is one of my favorite episodes by far! it shows Holmes as his classic genius hound on the scent victorious, and when he's satisfied his intelligence, he helps a lady in distress. and its so EASY for him! I also LOVE the holmes/lestrade rivalry. Lestrade always tries to outsmart Holmes like a younger brother looking up to his older more wordly brother, but I love that, instead of getting frustrated that Holmes always figures it out first, he admires Holmes even more! wonderful!

Actually I find this episode to be one of the finest in the Brett Holmes collection, and this ending to be the single most exuberant, joyful moment in this series. I love the "patriotic march" variation on the Holmes music, I love the pompous old Victorians, the ice cold actress wife of Trelawny-Hope. And finally I love Hardwicke and Brett. Wonderful actors and men. Thanks for uploading :)

Jeremy Brett has made this role so much his own that it is impossible to see him in other productions without believing you are watching Sherlock Holmes. I cannot imagine how his portrayal of this fictional figure could be bettered - and the recent ludicrous film with that Yank playing the role simply goes to prove this point. The above is also true for his sidekick, Dr Watson, played exquisitely by Edward Hardwick..

Just as a point of interest, it seems to me that Holmes is something of an anti hero. The way he assumes an attitude to the hierarchy and those in authority. I love these episodes, and think Jeremy Brett is BRILLIANT as SH. Thanks for sharing. But honestly, even though I think Patricia Hobbs is a really talented actor, I truly believe that she was miscast in this role. Thanks again.

Hearing Holmes' line at 2:33 ('because I knew it was nowhere else'), I come to suspect that before he went to play Jack Sparrow, Johnny Depp watched and listened to Jeremy Brett. There is a distinctive slur (occasional at first, but progressive over the duration of the series) in Brett's vocal performance that reminds me of Depp's slur when performing as Sparrow. And the body language also shows certain similarities.
