Tbf with the time jump, that's how it was in the source material (which wasn't amazing or what fans necessarily wanted but was fine), it was the fact that they handled the pacing and showcasing of these new characters and stories so poorly that they didn't give a fair chance for anime only watchers to ever have the desire to buy into it
