This is the first video I have seen about Ankara and I quite liked it. Very vibrant and modern city. Is English well understood ? Did you interact much with the people. In my very early life I thought of studying engineering in Middle Eastern Technical University (METU), Ankara. It did not materialise. It looks like a very cultured place. Thanks for the video Jason. Never miss any from you. Looking forward to more from Turkey.

Generally I found English not to be as well spoken as in other parts of Turkey, but there were some. It’s a very nice city.
@thedoeguy5 жыл бұрын
We enjoyed visiting Ankara during Ramadan when there was a lot of nighttime activity in the neighborhoods. Though English isn't spoken as widely as in Istanbul, we didn't encounter any issues. We used the metro, ate in local restaurants, visited the Ataturk Mausoleum, the Citadel, the city market, the old Capitol and the lively Kizilay area.
@senolwh5 жыл бұрын
Actually, you are right. Ankara is the most educated city in Turkey (in terms of per capita university graduates). English will be spoken moslty in Cankaya district. It will be rare in surrounding area. It is not cosmopolitan like İstanbul or Antalya. It is mostly coservative Turks from the central and northern areas. It has movie and theater goers than any otner city. Same goes for book sales. Tourism level is low. Major employers are the Turkish government, defense industries, health care and plenty of manufacturing. But you can spend 4-5 days just visiting historic places in the city. On the other hand, You can spend 5 years in İstanbul and there will places you have not seen.

I was stationed in Ankara from Nov 1962 until May 1964 with the US Army Security Agency. It was during the Cold War period. At that time Ankara had just under 1 million population, now it has in excess of 5 million. The city looks more modern now than when I was there, is cleaner and the people are dressed better. The country appears much richer. I spend 18 months in Ankara and the city made quite an impression on me. The Turkish people too. I recall that every home had a Turkish flag and a photo of Ataturk in them. Ataturk is the father and founder of the Turkish Republic. After World War 1, he landed at Samsun on the Black Sea with his army and defeated the government of the Ottoman Empire. Also on Holidays, giant photos of Ataturk would be hung from many building down town and giant Turkish flags too. There were always a lot of Turkish flags flying in Turkey at all times . Actually the second in Command to Ataturk, Ismet Inonu was President when I was there. He passed away in the 1970s. He is now buried with Ataturk [who passed away in 1938] in the Mausoleum. I have always wanted to go back to visit Ankara and Turkey, but never made it back. At the time I was there the Turks were very friendly to the US. Not so much these days.
@furkanday13294 жыл бұрын
there is still an US military base in Ankara. My father was a Turkish military officer. And the base my father was working in between was American base. So still some American Soldiers living and working in Ankara. Yeah Ankara is hosting 5.5 million people. And its bringing some problems like traffic jam. but Ankara is dealing with it better than Istanbul. And in Ankara more of parks, and trees than Istanbul. I think Ankara is most liveable city in between of biggest 5 city in Turkey.

There are more to visit in Ankara but this city which is our capital now was just a village or a little bigger at one time. It gained importance, especially during the Turkish Independence War, 1919-1922, and became our capital because of its strategic location, not close and not far to the west part of Turkey. :) Hope you enjoyed and had a great time in Turkey :D

Sorry but, it's not true man! Ankara was formerly known as Angora. The Hittites gave it the name Ankuwash before 1200 BC, the Galatians and Romans called it Ancyra, and in the classical, Hellenistic, and Byzantine periods it was known as Ἄγκυρα Ánkyra. The city subsequently fell to the Romans, and to the Byzantines. Seljuk Sultan Alparslan opened the door into Anatolia for the Turks at the victory of Malazgirt in 1071. Then in 1073, he annexed Ankara, an important locatian for military transportatian and natural resources, to Turkish territory.Ankara was an important cultural, trading, and arts center in Roman times, and an important trading center on the caravan route to the east in Ottoman times. It had declined in importance by the nineteenth century. It again became an important center when Kemal Atatürk chose it as the base from which to direct the War of Liberation. By consequence of its role in the war and its strategic position, it was declared the capitalaf the new Republic of Turkey on October 13th, 1923.
@calcifern Жыл бұрын
@@tetkikhukuk I live in Ankara but idk why it's falling behind so badly despite being the capital. I wish there were more investments here since it's actually where the international meetings and political events also take place. I also don't understand why there's not much historical heritage to see considering the facts you mentioned. Ankara castle and Hamamönü are pretty much the only historical attractions in the city.

Eski tür şirin Osmanlı konutları çok fazla yok. Avrupada öyle değil. Normal sıradan insanlar 1800'lü yıllardan kalma avrupai mimari konutlarda yaşıyorlar. Bizde binalar %99 modern bina, Tarihi yapıtlarda genelde cami, medrese, türbe falan oluyor bizde.

@@giedrejanuskeviciute5952 oh really? What is so far away for example?! Our country pretty modern and liveable thank god, and we are happy in our free, democratic, modern country, please stop to make somethings about the fake distopia in your head and back off. Our country is our business and we pretty good with that, now you can get out. Have you ever been in turkey? No. Shut up you brainwashed.
