So first off, you say midevil artwork shows you how to shoot, but that's not to say the artist new how to shoot a bow or how to properly depicted it. The reason why we shoot bows the way we do today is, yes because we have lighter bows, but also we draw in a way to prevent injury. This way with this draw weight is how you do serious damage to your back and shoulders. They don't care much about that in the midevil days.

My grandfather always taught me that the the tool does all the work, so if you are doing something that you are good at and you have changed your tool, now it's become really difficult, switch back to your original tool. They make tools for a reason, and that's to make the job easier, quicker, and allowing the tool to do all the work. He wasn't a big man in stature, but he could put 4 20 penny nails between his fingers and drive them through rough cut lumber with one swing of a 16oz. hammer, and he had forearms that put Popeye to shame. The funny thing about it was that he never looked liked he was putting any effort into driving those nails, it was all in his wrist and his ability to hit the center of that nail every time. My great grandfather was the exact same way, he was a lumberjack/hellraiser. But, before a man could cut down a tree with a chainsaw, he would have have three on the ground using an axe, it all came from four perfectly placed hits, letting his axe do all the work, and two straight cuts on the opposite side, and a tree with a 12" to 16" diameter was heading for the ground, and he was already 1/4 through the next tree. So with all that effort into firing one arrow and the biggest enemy of the Chinese was the Mongolian's who were archers off of horse calvary, and probably shooting 5-10 arrows to every one being shot at them, who really had the advantage, especially if the Mongolians were as accurate as they were fast, and they weren't stationary targets.

Just remember that you should feel the tension not just in the upper shoulders, but also just below your shoulder blades. That is your Romboid muscle, and is what is known as the "back tension" muscle. If you can focus the weight of the bow from the arms, to the shoulders and upper back, you can draw more and more powerful bows.

I read a Norman account of being ambushed by Welsh in the 11 century, they would fire from very short range, within 15 meters, direct line of sight, no lofting the arrows. He talked about one knight taking a shot in the leg that penatrated his mail, passed through the thigh, out the other side, through the horse, killing the animal. The power those things could generate was frightening, at longer ranges they are very hard to be accurate and take many years to master. If the English lost an archer it was a bad loss as they took so long to train.

@ISAFSoldier
@ISAFSoldier 8 ай бұрын
That's a bit of a false positive. You have to remember outside of war, Welsh/English bowmen, were almost exclusively farmers, hence the term "yeoman archers". The enlarged right side, is more likely from regular farm work favoring the right side. Because how much time is spent practicing war vs farming?
@Crusader-tg1wx
@Crusader-tg1wx 8 ай бұрын
@@ISAFSoldier Is that kind of deformity common among farmers of the same period whose kings did not use longbowmen in their armies? If so, I can see that being another cause. However, the training needed to use a longbow was supposedly decades long and requires a lot of practice. Even if you were a farmer by trade, I imagine you would not have your skeleton altered as much if you used a crossbow in the French army for example.
@ISAFSoldier
@ISAFSoldier 8 ай бұрын
@@Crusader-tg1wx I'll preface that I havent been able to find such records between farmers, so admittedly this is a theory based on inference and anecdotal evidence. What I put together however, is how english law only requires practicing of bow shooting of such heavy bows once a week for one hour, sure their might be some who would practice for longer, but I'llget to that. This amount of time even for an entirety of ones isnt enough by itself to create such a deformity. Secondly, the reading and research into medieval shooting guilds, I havent run into such records for such deformities here, and this would be where you'd have the highest chances of finding deformities among such individuals because they're always shooting from the records. Third, whenever I do have soreness from shooting a 100lb longbow, it isnt the described areas of deformity. On a slightly related note, back when I first started HEMA the soreness I got from tossing cuts with a longsword included fell closer in line with the deformity records.
