Ann Miller was definitely one of a kind. She had it all. Just watching her gives you joy. Even though she was second billed, she always managed to have the best numbers. She always stole the show. Thank God for film preservation and KZbin too..

As 19 year rehearsal pianist, Columbus, OH, 1973, Ms Miller asked me: MILLER ON TAP or MILLER'S HI-LIFE? Which title do I like best? The second one, I said. She pondered, "I think you're right, honey. Now tell that skinny-ass conductor friend of yours to slow down at end of Act 1. I' m tapping 300 miles per hour and he keeps rushing! Ann Miller was the best and off-stage her Texan accent was my command.

After her idol Eleanor Powell quit, Ann inherited the crown as Queen of Taps. The style was going out of fashion, but she kept it fresh for another decade or more. She lacked Ellie's athleticism but her speed and control on the ground were Grade One, and she branched out into hot adagio and Latinate duets with Ricardo Montalban. As others have commented, Ann frequently took a featured spot and walked off with the film. Her vitality and good cheer are undimmed nearly 70 years after her last dance on the big screen.

@@esmeephillips5888 I'd argue that she was a better dancer than Powell. Yes, Powell was AMAZING, and technically very skilled -- especially in the famous number w/Astaire -- but watch any of her work, and you'll notice that while she could tap fast, and spin fast, she couldn't do BOTH AT THE SAME TIME, like Ann Miller.

When Ginger Rogers did this number in 1935, with Fred Astaire, in "Roberta", she was 24, cute and sharp. Ann Miller here is, I think 28, sexy and sharp! Note that it was Ginger who gave Ann her first big break in 1937, in "Stage Door", when she got her first part, at Ginger's urging. They remained friends throughout their lives. Yes, she did appear to be stuck in second billed roles during her MGM career. But before MGM she was at Columbia where she got first billing in every film and the star role. So in a sense coming to MGM was a downward move for her in that sense.

The "wolf howls" at the start of the number woke up my dog - as I suspected they would, when they started. In keeping with the requirements of 1950s choreography, the male dancers are shown on the floor with their knees splayed - usually at least one male has to slide in from off-camera on his knees in this time period.

It's a Jack Cole thing. Designing dances for restricted spaces such as nightclub floors led him to emphasize arresting, jerky acrobatics over the smooth formations and expansive filmic space of Berkeley and Pan. But the creator of 'The Continental' was easily capable of working on a smaller canvas and moving with the times. Cole disliked tap, but Hermes knew what Ann was best at after 15 years' friendship. He mashed up styles for her. Later Fosse and Carol Chaney were awarded the credit for ideas that Cole and Pan had been trying ten years before.

What a let down. First new lyrics( not an improvement), ugly color cinematography, dull choreography, and worst of all, Ann Miller looks terrible. I never thought Adrian could design an ugly gown but he did in this case. The color is unflattering and it makes her appear overweight.

James Ryan I agree. Although Ann is a wonderful dancer, she looks big. I prefer the Fred and Ginger dance of I’ll be Hard to Handle.. it’s much better imo musically too.
