Ok, I thought I posted this last night, but maybe I didn't click "Post." Anyway, this was a very interesting conversation and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but there was something that she said that I just had to double-check and, while I was sort of hoping it was true, it turned out not to be quite how she made it out to seem. When they're discussing the "debt that society owes to pornography," with regard to technologies that were either motivated by the desire for erotica or technologies that were virtually immediately used for that purpose, she mentions Video Format War between Betamax and VHS, saying that because Sony refused to license porn for mass production on Betamax (which is true!), that's why Betamax lost the war. Sadly, this is not the case. While it's very likely that the lack of pornography on Betamax, coupled with its availability on VHS, contributed to Betamax's downfall, the much more significant contributors were 1) the fact that Betamax machines were sold for about $1000 compared to VHS's ~$300, and 2) the fact that Sony refused to sacrifice video and audio quality for space, and so a single Betamax tape could only record for 1 hour, whereas VHS could record for 2-4 hours (I'm not sure if VHS always had the SP/EP distinction that allowed you to record for 2 hours and higher quality or 4 hours and lower quality -- neither of which compared to Betamax's quality, but again it could only record for 1 hour on a single tape). So, did the lack of porn contribute to Betamax's downfall? Very possibly. Was it the decisive factor? Probably not.

Alaric Holmes I have in the back of my mind another, darker, meaner reason for the failure of Betamax, but I can't put my finger on it... but I do believe that the success of video, generally, was porn. But shit man, VHS was horrible medium; such a step back in quality for the sake of almost magical usability and versatility. I never had the opportunity to see Betamax in action, though.

Regarding the illegal downloading of porn, she's not considering all factors. Watching porn for most people is still a clandestine act, which in turn encourages people to find the least noticeable way of finding it on the internet. The 'samples' offered on most sites are often...'enough' for most guys. Finally, the industry seems to have grown dramatically in the past 40 years, and with a lower threshold for entry (social, tech), so to speak, the economics doesn't work as well as it used to.

The last time I looked at buying porn the price was still the same just the media it was on has changed. I could go to HMV and buy 2 or 3 general entertainment DVD's for the price of one film, I would suggest the porn industry (we at least the retailers) have priced themselves out of the market.

20:18 - 21:17 I'm surprised we don't already treat these 14+ yr old kids as a distinct sex industry demographic, "SEX STUDENTS" or something. They ARE clearly consuming porn, but are also under age of consent, they're obviously curious so why not formalise this somehow into an EDUCATIONAL market? That "i'm doing something bad!" fear that kids have with porn, strikes me as kindof archaic in our modern world. Isn't there a mature way for society to provide safe normal youthful exploration?

roidroid if we lived in a rational world, but we do not. Parents develop a very committed attachment to preserving children's "innocence". Most voters are parents. Your idea is "sick"! It's like you have just buggered and strangled (or vice Versace), every infant in the land. You must be castrated chemically and then slowly with a rusty bread knife, just to be sure, for the pleasure of normal non pervs and to serve as a warning to other feral thought criminals. Save yourself! Repent and jump from the nearest window. Obviously, if you live in a bungalow....you know what to do....

I have to admit, I have never thought porn should cost money. Ironically I am strongly against music piracy. I guess Anna would call me a hypocrite. But honesty, music is art, and porn is... well, a mastabatory aid.
