Yeah... I went to seminary. Never did we study ANYTHING that said that slavery was ok with God. There were verses where God told people how to treat slaves (you know... NOT horribly) but those weren't an ok to have slaves, they were a "Ok, I know you are going to have them but you had better treat them right at least." and they were supposed to free them after a certain number of years, if I recall correctly.

I understand that but they had better have treated them right and even paid them a decent salary for the work they were doing. Some slaves chose to stay with their owners after they were freed and many took their names. So some people were, indeed, kind.

Some slaves were taught to read and even do advanced math, and sometimes complex science and medicine, so they could act as office workers, write correspondence, order supplies, handle billing and sales, control livestock breeding and epidemiology, etc… the jobs of slaves were by no means limited to picking cotton. None were taught to read so they could enjoy the Bible.

These are my thoughts and my thoughts only. He asked someone in the congregation "is that right" when he used the word 'race'. Who told him it was the right word? Was it his wife? Was it David Waller? Whoever it was should take some of the blame. It is blatantly clear that Michael Keller is not educated and horribly brain washed. What frightens me, is that he has access to his grandchildren and probably other small children as well. In my opinion, ALL of his minor grandchildren should be removed from his accessibility. His children have "drunk his kool-aid" but hopefully they love their children enough to save them and will let them go. Because of this "sermon" could he be charged with hate speech? Growing up Independent Baptist in Georgia... I remember it was preached quite often that races should not mix. And I'm 37... so it was in the 90s and early 2000s. I'll never understand that mentality. So happy I left religion behind.

My mom grew up Methodist in Texas. She used to say, “The races should be kept pure”. Thankfully she came to realize that was a backwards mentality and didn’t pass it on to her kids. Michael Keller is completely unhinged and passed that backwards crap to his kids. It’s really very sad.

I have a friend in her 70's that fell in love with a black teen when they were in high school. They had to go their separate ways because of the stigma. Several years ago they rekindled their relationship and got married. True story! There is a wonderful article in the local Columbus Dispatch (Ohio).

When my mother-in-law was alive, died in her upper eighties in 2006, one of her granddaughters who was white was dating a black guy. Grandma stated that she wasn’t prejudiced against the negroes (her term not mine) but she just didn’t think the races should mix. On another occasion my husband and his brothers took their mom out for her birthday lunch. While they were sitting there she started gawking around the restaurant and loudly told her sons their was a “negro” in the dining room. They tried to shush her up but she conTinued to search and finally pointed across the room and said, “there he is and he’s a big one too!” Her sons told her she needed to stop it or they would get thrown out of the restaurant. We live in an upper plains state with sparse population and very few African Americans at that time, and not really a huge number even now. She was a very nice, gentle, petite older woman, who swore she wasn’t racist. This was a case of systemic racism, leftover from someone born in the early 1920’s - I’m not defending her though. Anna’s dad is of the next generation and certainly should know better!

As much as it is crazy listening to this, we must come to a point in our lives that we realize that we can't change people who hate. We can choose to stay away from those who hate but to accept or look for any type of apology is crazy. It would never be sincere. This country allows us to be who we want to be and not everyone is going to like us for those choices. I used to let this stuff get me angry but now I just feel bad for them. We are all so divided, it's just sad. Stay true to who you are and don't let other people make you feel less.

I agree that members of the clergy should go to seminary. However, even well-educated, ordained ministers will go back and forth from interpreting some bible passages literally while choosing other passages to interpret how it fits their narrative.

The devil and his angels are not human. Dehumanizing "other than white" has always been a rationale for slavery. The African Americans had to become non human for Christians to allow their slavery and treatment to happen. I am so discusted by this sermon and the people who still agree with this crap.
