Abstract. Articial intelligence (AI) drives signicant changes in scientic research, oering the potential to improve research eciency, foster innovation, and increase productivity. As AI technology advances, the European Union (EU) must seize its opportunities while managing the associated risks.
This presentation highlights the importance of focusing AI research on areas with abundant complex data, such as personalised health, social cohesion, and transitions to green and digital economies, which will benet EU citizens. It also stresses the need for environmentally sustainable AI development to reduce the technology's ecological footprint. AI's growing role as a geopolitical asset, with infrastructure concentrated in a few non-European entities, underscores the need for the EU to enhance access to AI resources for its universities and research institutes. Current proposals include establishing a European Institute for AI in Science, which would provide computational power, cloud infrastructure, and AI training. A European AI in Science Council could fund interdisciplinary AI research aligned with EU
values. Addressing the ethical, legal, and philosophical implications of AI will ensure its responsible integration into scientic work, safeguarding human rights and promoting transparency. By advancing AI literacy, the EU can attract and retain talent, securing its leadership in future technological
advancements.
