Amazing. Climbing aside, from a video production standpoint I love that we can hear your heartbeat and breath so clearly. So often, you see a really strong climber on video and they make everything look so easy you kind of become disconnected to how much effort they're putting in. Hearing your heart and lungs working gave this video a visceralness that made me able to feel your effort despite you making this look easy. Loved it.

This is a really cool observation. One of my joys in climbing is to flow- which sometimes, when I’m lucky, means making hard sequences look easy!- so it doesn’t always translate how tough movements are. I’m glad I just kept the audio as is haha
@clamsjog11 күн бұрын
The heartbeat is intense. Also it’s so hard to tell how overhung that route is without having been there. So sick.
@AnnaHazelnutt11 күн бұрын
I know!! It’s so much more overhung than this video implies 💀

The swinging QuickDraws hanging away from the face are a very good indicator of how much overhang you have.

Such an awesome video! The high definition camerawork really showed how hard your fingers were pulling. The hot mic showed how hard you were breathing. It really pulled you into the climb. Great job!!!

Wicked climb and video! It's always a treat to see you climb in general, but on something so many nearly invisible holds, pretty much nothing to grab onto with those insane crimps... alongside the hot mic with your breathing and heartbeat... just.. wow. Super impressive how clean that send was. I really love the "just climbing" vibes of the video, nice work! I do wish you would wear a helmet though. Both as an example for others and to protect yourself in the event of a fall, especially with lead. I remember a lot of your older videos you had a helmet on (with a sweet pride sticker on it!) and that was very much appreciated, especially with what seems to be continued rise of climbers on KZbin not wearing helmets for videos while climbing or belaying. When you back flagged with your bottom foot pretty much behind the rope and draw at 3:40, my heart was in my throat! Sorry for using "mom mode" on you, I just want to see you having the opportunity to do awesome things for many years to come, climbing or otherwise.
@AnnaHazelnutt10 күн бұрын
Thank you so much! That moment at 3:40 was definitely the trickiest with the rope! There wasn’t really a great way to do the move while staying completely clear of it. As for helmets-I hear you, truly, and I appreciate the care behind your words. I still wear helmets (though my beloved rainbow one broke!), just not as often for single-pitch sport climbing. That said, I’ve absolutely worn one on my big wall project in Mexico, for trad climbing, and on more serious sport leads. I’ve found that climbing without a helmet in certain situations makes me feel freer, more in tune with the movement. It’s not the safest choice, and I completely agree that helmets are the better option. I also understand that my decision might not always set the example you hope for, and I’m sorry for that. At the end of the day, it’s a personal risk assessment, but I truly appreciate the concern and support 🩷
@madikava10 күн бұрын
@AnnaHazelnutt Thank you for taking the time to respond! To be clear, no shade meant for what happened at 3:40 as it looked like there was no way to not be close to the rope in that area without completely different beta that probably doesn't exist or work for you. You obviously climbed this so you know that already, and you definitely know the safety implications of a foot behind the rope, just that was a scary moment and looked unavoidable. Stuff like that happens sometimes and I think all of us pucker a bit when it happens, hoping for the best outcome. Rock climbing is dangerous and risky after all. I truly mean that your send was absolutely impressive and clean, this moment doesn't detract from that at all. Y'know, that is an exceptionally fair and measured response and that is one of the reasons I really appreciate and respect you as a climber and person. 🩷 You are just so very honest and real about all of this, no bs, just you being you and that means a ton. (Nooo, that helmet was awesome too!) I know I'm a stickler for helmets when I climb with my local group, especially for the belayer with the quality of my local rock and frequency of rock fall in my area, but I'm also bringing out less experienced people to the local crags so I feel a bit more responsible to say something in those situations. I'm also likely more on edge about this due to my local community having seen some nasty injuries this past season that would have likely been far less severe if they had been wearing a helmet. I'm also totally a mom though and things like this are often on my mind, even if it's ultimately up to each individual to make their own decisions as you said. At least one nice thing about going full mom on climbing is my crag bag is always bursting with snacks and the boring essentials that everyone seems to forget that make a full day at the crag better! 🤣 Appreciate you, Anna! 🏳️🌈🩷

Raggedy Anne breathing! Musta been a powerful route to catch your nerves and breath so off-guard. You could try super deep rhythmic breathing to the point of hyper-oxygenation before starting the route, as you start to get dizzy slow your breath way down to calm the nerves and slow your heartbeat even further (it will already have slowed a little due to the abundance of oxygen). This leaves you able to start the route with a huge oxygen surplus and slowed heart rate which will help keep the nerves in check. Then maintain forcefully controlled deep breathing for as much of the climbing as possible. This breaks the cycle of panic trying to desperately breath when you actually you are in a hard sequence and can't and then having to catch your breath in an uncontrolled manner at rests. If you stay slightly hyper oxygenated the tense moves are easier (you have loads of oxygen in your blood) and you catch your breath very quickly at rests (again loads of oxygen in the blood). I find that overall it makes the climbing smoother and more flowing. Anyhoo, long story, try it, might work for you. Yes you will sound like a steam locomotive - cho choo the send train!!

So I wasn’t sure what to call it- some people say 8b, some say 8b+. Tommy gave it 8b+, it got downgraded i think, but recently people have been giving it 8b+ again because it’s… hard(?) so I just put the slash to be middle hahaha
