You always have to remember movies are a business first. Earlier film producers could be a little adventurous but once the major studios became corporations in the late 20's, actresses and actors had to be sure fire winners or they would be sent to B picture hell or dismissed altogether.

She was a star, but not as big as she could have been. I saw this biographical film (documentary) in it's entirety. I'm white, but at the end of this film, I was in tears, because of that and because she died so young, and never married. History is amazing and for the most part forgotten and lost to time, but I am amazed by those trailblazers who were first at something important in the world, or invented something that would benefit mankind. This was a great documentary, and I had never previously heard of Anna May Wong. So thank you Yunah Hong for educating the world and preserving the memory, and for the beautiful piano soundtrack.

To Skyline To TheSeaAndMe: And what about the nice Chinese dresses that she wore? Real classic. You don't see those anymore in Hong Kong, except during wedding ceremonies. Too bad, American moviemakers don't dare to make 'non-whites play the leading roles, even up to now. I think that is the reason why Bruce Lee made his movies in Hong Kong instead. His idea of 'Kung Fu' TV series was stolen from him and cast a white man to play his role....David Carridine.

In many ways, she's a pioneer for many Asian-American actresses and artists such as Charlyne Yi, Constance Wu, Awkwafina and Ali Wong (to name just a few). Hollywood has the paradox of being ahead of the curve in social change and in dragging its collective feet (consider this years Oscars for example). While Anna May had so many stumbling blocks in her day, she STILL managed to eke out an impressive career, which we can still see on the silver screen.

The first time I paid attention to this famous actress, is thru the GOOGLE CELEBRATION page today. I think I have seen some of her old movies but never paid attention to her as an actress. Now I think that she is one of the legends of an actress. Too bad, American moviemakers are too prejudiced by not casting her as a leading lady in films that she had done. Even now, the year 2020, you don't even see Asian actors/actresses playing any leading roles here in the U.S.A. The 'white' United States is still too bigoted. It is so sad.

Universal in the late 50's and early 60's was a small studio not the powerhouse it is oday. Ross Hunter cast leading ladies such as Susan Hayward , Doris Day, Lana Turner but also stars of yesterday such as Constance Bennett, Myrna Loy, etc. One stand out casting was Anna May Wong in Hunter's production of Portrait in Black. @MrJm3236 жыл бұрын
Oh, really? ....This short documentary doesn't go into enough detail. She apparently was despised by the KuoMinTang (Nationalist Party) - connected press. When she landed in Hong Kong, she was brought to tears by a jeering mob (which may have been organized by an agitating KMT-connected press). It had nothing to do with politics; and she was, ironically, a KMT sympathizer. It had to do with her early roles in the 1920s when she was depicted much more sexually and, at least in the opinion of KMT-affiliated journalists, in a way that the KMT thought was demeaning to a proper modern Chinese woman. She also didn't speak Mandarin, but a dialect which her ancestors spoke (from Canton - but I don't remember if it was Cantonese; it started with a "T"). Of course, it was the Nationalists who made Mandarin mandatory throughout China in the schools. The fact that she needed translators in places like Shanghai may have driven home the point to her that she was NOT Chinese after all. (China had changed significantly from the time her grandfather had left; and she was very much an American woman.) She even complained that the "Chinese" (the KMT press particularly) thought that she was too American; yet many Americans thought she was too Chinese.
@heidiw36156 жыл бұрын
sadly... it was worse. Chinese people and government thought she was a shame, since the roles she played in movies were mostly bad representation and stereotypes of Chinese people. So they considered her a disgrace.

How shameful that performers of color and different ethnicities have to leave their home country to become stars in their own right as they have to do in the U.S. Bruce Lee, Anna May Wong and Josephine Baker to name 3.

Her career was stunted by racism. You can’t talk about one and not the other. Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable.
@MrJm3235 жыл бұрын
@@charlottep4222 ...No, you can't talk about her career without addressing the racism; but the racism was NOT the most significant factor in her career. Her determination to improve her craft and to tirelessly promote herself -- to convince others of her value to them -- WAS the most significant factor. She was not one of those "woe is me; I'm just a victim of the racist system!" type of person. As proof of this, consider how many actors and actresses from the silent era were able to successfully transition to the "talkies". MOST couldn't. Type-casting is a complaint which is very common from actors of all races. She was finally able to get some of the leading roles she desired (including playing dignified and sympathetic women doctors and private investigators), even if it wound up being only in the B-grade movies of the late '30s. Progress was slow but real. All in all, she had a very successful career; and after her ONE and only trip to China (and the shabby treatment she received from Chinese politicians -- especially Madam Chiang -- in spite of all she did for China during World War II), she finally realized how much America was her true home. Her life was, in fact, an AMERICAN success story. ....I hope that doesn't make YOU uncomfortable.
@charlottep42225 жыл бұрын
MrJm323 Who exactly are the “boo hoo, victims of racism?” at this time in history? The lynching victims? The segregated school children? Martin Luther King Jr and the people he protested with? The people who couldn’t vote? Who was it that was too whiney for your tastes? And Anna May Wong was successful AFTER she left America, and spent most of her career in Europe, starring in German and English films, where she was less constrained by stereotypes, since Europe has been ahead of Americans in that regard by several decades. In certain states Anna May couldn’t even attend her own premieres, or was segregated away from her white co stars. I know you probably won’t care, but this is your daily reminder that the past was only good for a select few of a select color!
@MrJm3235 жыл бұрын
@@charlottep4222 ...."Who [is] it that [is] too whiney for your tastes?" ....Well, YOU. Not her though; and that's the point. If her acting and modelling career was mostly in America (which it was; and she died in America -- in her bed, in her house), then that should tell any person possessing commonsense that she found success IN AMERICA. Her career spanned the silent era, talkies of the Thirties and Forties, as well as television. ....She had plenty of opportunity to stay in Britain or France or Germany (yes, even in the Nazi period -- Goebbels asked her to), or go to and stay in China (which she visited once and never went back). ....She chose America. (Or, is it that America chose her? In spite of the fact that she didn't have a proper American passport and had to endure undignified treatment everytime she re-entered the U.S., she kept on returning to America. ...She finally got a proper passport when the U.S. repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act in the 1940s.) She probably should have stayed in Britain -- whose film industry is the only one which allowed her an on-screen kiss with white men (one of which even made the final edit -- not 'Piccadilly' but 'Java Head'). But, probably for reasons of family, she kept returning to Los Angeles -- where she acquired property and made her home. "Lynchings"? ....The nearest she experienced that level of violence was in ...wait for the drumroll, please ....CHINA (Hong Kong -- at the hands of local Chinese who were riled up by the KMT press). But, as for your last remark (about how the [American] past was only good for a select number of white people): The Chinese in America were not captured and brought to the country. In spite of the sporadic violence (deadly anti-Chinese riots of the American West), they kept coming in and would have done so in larger numbers if it weren't for the exclusion acts. ...This fact (and the present situation where black Africans and Arabs are risking their lives crossing the Mediterranean in rickety fishing boats to get to Europe, or Mexicans and Central Americans are crossing deserts to get to America) should cause you to pause and wonder why they'd do that considering that bad ol'e Whitey is so oppressive to 'people of color'. ....The simple fact is, things are often WORSE in the lands run by 'people of color'. Would Anna May Wong have had such opportunities if she was born and raised in Qing-dynasty China (that is to say, China BEFORE it came into contact with those wicked white people)?!? What was the status of women in China prior to contact with the wicked West? The fact is, things were damn better for the masses (even the colored masses) in America or the British Empire than for the masses of whatever color in any other place in the world. That's why so many Chinese were willing to move to America (or the British Isles or to British-controlled Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, etc.). ....They just LOVED that lynching and segregation and vote-denial, I suppose! ....(When have the ordinary Chinese been given the vote in a genuine democratic process in China? Answer: Taiwan -- only in the late '80s, Hong Kong -- in the '80s, mainland China -- NOT YET.)
