I heard Ann Netrebko sing this at the Kennedy Center in 1999, and here voice was so exquisite that the whole audience was mesmerized. It was the most beautiful sound I ever heard in my life. I have been a fan of hers ever since. This is just a particularly bad quality recording.

Yes, her voice was much lighter and easier, her technic is way better now, but in spite of that I always get the feeling that she sang more easily with this lighter technic. Sometimes I feel as if she put too much emphasis on the size of her voice. Not always but sometimes. Btw I do like her :)

I agree I don't think this is as late as 1999. I saw Anna in War & Peace in 2000 and her technique was a great deal more polished than this. Better colouring better phrasing better all round interpretation. I would say it is while she was at the conservatoire or a concert very soon after that. Early 90s or thereabouts. But she has come a very long way since then!!!

I love how her voice has darkened and become more dramatic. But I came here after listening to Luisa Tetrazinni and wow! I know its bad to compare, but Luisa caught Gilda's girlish innocence and infatuation like a struggling little bird and held it in her hand. Here we have a mature woman in love who knows the meaning of passion. These are very different sentiments.

И лет ей всего 48, а уже в формах Кабалье, хотя Беллуча, да и много кто и старше выглядит просто превосходно. Как же обидно, боже ну как же за неё обидно, что с ней и её голосом стало и нам уже ничего от этого великолепия не осталось для наслаждения искусством и красотой. You are right. She has never described herself as a coloratura; she does sing the lyric repertoire beautifully and her high notes are thrilling, especially as she has aged. Dramatic rep. she has been attempting is too big for her, and is not good for her voice. She is a terrific actress, and I imagine she longs to sing the dramatic roles for that reason. Still, it's too much for her voice, and she loses that lovely brilliance and velvet of her sound when she tries to make her voice 'bigger.'

After Anna Bolena, her Adina in the Elixir of Love at the Met last year was a disappointment, although in large part due to the atrocious production. This year, however, she is ROCKING Eugene Onegin. It's a stellar production with an exeptional cast. Netreboko, Marius Kwiecen and Paul Beczala. Fantastic. She absolutely dominates, and her voice is right where it should be.

I highly doubt any opera singer would ever get a nose job as it would change the sound of their voice. I think the quality of this video is very poor hence the dark shadows on everyone's face and the hiss in the background. It's a pity as it is a beautiful performance.

It seems to me the the date is wrong. It must be 89 instead. If you look at the il barbiere from 1996 you'll see at that time she already had the look, the smile, the swing, the freedom of scene movements that we saw later, that made her unique and a superstar.

In 1989 Anna was 18 and not yet studying at the conservatory. This video doesn't look like 1999, I think it is the time of her 2 or 3 course of the conservatory, 1992 or 1993.

I only partly agree with you. I do think that her voice will never be a real dramatic voice, so in my opinion lyric roles are the bests for her. Or maybe a bit more dramatic but definitely not a real dramatic. Anna is a high soprano , not a coloratura, and she knows it and doesnot say that she is a coloratura she actually said that she is a lyrics soprano.

There is no such thing as "high soprano", either coloratura or lyric or spinto or dramatic. She's really a coloratura not a lyric soprano. She just needs to develop her techniques more as a coloratura. There are a lot of great coloraturas in history.

Dadacomero brava Anna aveva il soprano lirico , e col tempo si è rovinata da sola con il repertorio sbagliato, perdendo un occasione di imparare la tecnica perfetta; poi aveva noti acuti bellissimi naturali, ma con questa fretta di cantare tutto quello ,che gli capitava, addirittura, ha acettato anche il repertorio drammatico, e poi ,priva delle note basse... chissà se tornerà come prima...

Yes changed, not only with age, but also technical. The middle register is now more, much more darker! Using chest voice to colour the upper register. Must say I love the light soprano here. Lovely!
