Wonderful! These two singers are perfect for their parts. Anna Netrebko is a perfect Manon and Jonas Kaufmann a wonderful Des Grieux in this St. Sulpice scene, concert version. The sound techs. reduced the volume level exactly when the singers reach the final fortissimo final. However, in a stage performance that you also have of the two same singers in the same scene, I was not convinced with the acting nor the staging.

Does Kauffman have any gaps? And yet he is not boring in the least. He reminds one so much of Mario lanza but less strained and in control..Gigli, Krause, Carreras , even Wunderlicht and Niels sound weak in comparison, Pavarotti too much squilo, Domingo less crystalline and live….
