Fabi has a healthy ego where he doesn’t act narcissistically but still moves with the poise and confidence justified by his skill level. I don’t think he has no ego, but rather just the right amount as an elder statesman of the game.

Where is the threefold? The rook positions from the time Anna moves her king to h7 are: f1/f2/b5 - f1/f2/a5 - f1/f3/a5 - f1/f3/b5 - f1/f2/b5 (2nd time) - f1/f2/a5 (2nd time) - f1/f3/a5 (2nd time) - f1/f3/b5 (2nd time). And then she moves the king to g8. No position is reached a third time.

Yeah. Danya (Daniel Naroditsky) did something similar when he played the Botez sisters and Dina Belenkaya simultaneously . He beat the Botez sisters but was losing against Dina in what looked like a slam dunk. But he gave Dina fits in the endgame and ultimately wound up getting a draw. Because he was a gentleman, otherwise he could have won on time as Dina still needed a lot of accurate moves to get the win.

Moreover, the fact that this video was uploaded in 4K while the other video from the same café was uploaded in a much lower resolution tells me that this wasn't exactly a spontaneous game. Caruana is truly a great guy, but after watching this video, my admiration for Hikaru has grown even more.

The truth is that Fabiano is at the top level because of his openings. He can memorize openings 30+ moves and through the opening he gains such good advantages even against grandmasters at the top level. Without a familiar opening, he's much worse with middle games and end games because of his disadvantage from openings.

I think Fabiano was hoping for a KF8 move for a while with his Rook, lol at 12:40. That might have been his only chance for a mate. Hoping that Anna didn't see it,:) It would be interesting to see more people playing the cow so you can get stats on its win rate. I wonder if the cow really does give you a bad middle game or not. I think a better explanation of the cow opening is that cows are slow and this is a very slow opening. cows take their time to go to pasture and so if you are playing the cow opening you are slow to grab the middle of the board. instead you let your opponent do that. Thats the way I understand it.

I hadn't played chess for years, because when I would go to this library years ago, there was a guy there that would play speed chess, and he would just beat me relentlessly, to the point I didn't want to play, he was a nice person, but he thought that was how someone would learn, but I never learned a fucking thing. But I got "simply chess" on steam, for free. And just played a game, expecting to lose, against the computer. But I actually won. And I did, at least the first 4 moves of the cow opening that I could remember. I really have no idea what I was doing with the opening. But now I will try to understand openings more. I was just shocked I won. I was still so traumatized from being blasted every time I played that guy, I almost ended the game part way through. But then I realized I might have a chance of winning, I found I could see moves. But the game wasn't a timed game.

Cows actually do have horns. Unfortunately they get cut of in conventional farming.
