The thing is, if all GM's behaved like Caruana, chess probably wouldn't have got that much attention. Chess in this time and age is entertainment too, hence the success of people like the Botez sisters, for example. Guys like Fabio just don't sell.

@@dieminervaeule people dont get personality traits after they become chess GMs. It's more than likely that those GMs youre speaking about had those personality beforehand. It's not about "who sells", Magnus didn't become a 5-time WC because he sells, he became a WC because he's great. Neither Hikaru waited for the moment to become one of the best chess players in the world to become adversarial and kind of a dick sometimes. I understand your logic, but it simply doesn't apply IRL
@dieminervaeule

@@exapsy You didn't understand me fully, I guess. Yes, I know that their personalities didn't come with their titles. I'm just saying that chess wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is today if the top players were all like Caruana, and that the players who contributed the most to chess becoming popular (Gotham for example) did so because they are able to sell the game due to being entertaining, and not solely because of their chess skills.

Yeah. Danya (Daniel Naroditsky) did something similar when he played the Botez sisters and Dina Belenkaya simultaneously . He beat the Botez sisters but was losing against Dina in what looked like a slam dunk. But he gave Dina fits in the endgame and ultimately wound up getting a draw. Because he was a gentleman, otherwise he could have won on time as Dina still needed a lot of accurate moves to get the win.

Two really nice people who both enjoy chess, and the Cow opening was a cool thing for Fabiano to play in honour of Anna ... He lost when he gave up the rock, but he played brilliantly. Anna well done.

i like Fabi, an aggressive calm chess player who does not have NPD problem. when he lose, he said "my fault", not throwing tantrum and accusing the opp as "cheater".

Wow, I'm really impressed that he did not blame it on the opening! He doesn't need that. What a self-confident reaction. And Anna's too, implying it might have something to do with "her" opening. And her hapiness is so genuine, I could really empathize with that! Well done.

The truth is that Fabiano is at the top level because of his openings. He can memorize openings 30+ moves and through the opening he gains such good advantages even against grandmasters at the top level. Without a familiar opening, he's much worse with middle games and end games because of his disadvantage from openings.

I didn't know that Fabi's playing style is aggressive. Now that I know, I think you both have similar styles (tactile and do some deep think calculating lines). He has such a calming demeanor. Good game Anna, congrats! I did have to chuckle seeing you stressing trying really hard and him just smiling at 12:51

I think Fabiano was hoping for a KF8 move for a while with his Rook, lol at 12:40. That might have been his only chance for a mate. Hoping that Anna didn't see it,:) It would be interesting to see more people playing the cow so you can get stats on its win rate. I wonder if the cow really does give you a bad middle game or not. Good job on the win. It does seem like Anna's and Fabiano's energy meshes well together, like their vibes get along.

I think a better explanation of the cow opening is that cows are slow and this is a very slow opening. cows take their time to go to pasture and so if you are playing the cow opening you are slow to grab the middle of the board. instead you let your opponent do that. Thats the way I understand it.
