Good information. MY single colony swarmed last week and only went about 30 feet from where the colony was. Yesterday they swarmed again and went high and far away. His description of how far 1st and 2nd swarms go is spot on. Thanks,

Hey I love your videos. My bees swarmed 4 times this year and i had to move them. My neighbors started complaining. I asked one of bee communities if I could keep them there. Going to inspect them this week.

Nice video! Do you usually use two brood boxes for the family development or you put queen excluder in beetween? When do you start adding supers?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
Depending on how well the family is building comb and how big it is. If it's doing well and growing fast we add a second supper in two weeks or so. Thanks for watching! :)

It would have been interesting to examine all those torn open drone cells for verroa mites. Also, the drone that he spotted with the damaged wings, it would have been interesting to see it captured, maybe killed in an alcohol wash to see the damage that was done. Leaving that drone in the hive was just a drain on resources in a hive that was already taxed by the splits as he will never contribute his genetics to any queen. Might be a good idea to keep a jar of alcohol ready for this type of observation. Your father is the first to spot and point out anything like this that I've seen in watching hundreds of bee videos.

Anna, It seems my hive has swarmed two times within the last 3 weeks. Is that possible and if so, what can I do to prevent more swarms. I did look into the hive today and moved some brood frames to the second box and added some new frames to the bottom and put a queen excluder. I saw your dad doing that in one of your videos. I am going to check next weekend to make sure the new queen is laying eggs. Let me know about the swarming
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
To prevent swarms you need to watch out for queen cells. If they are making a lot of queen cells in early spring and if the hive looks like it has a lot of bees that usually means they are ready to swarm. If you notice that you may want to expand your hive and remove the queen cells, expand so that they have room to grow or do splits, but make sure there is only one queen or queen cell per hive. Yes, it is possible to swarm that many times. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching! :)

Seems like there is a lot of honey left over from winter. Could you slow down swarming by removing it and forcing the bees to draw new foundation so the queen would have more room to lay?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about that, that hive (2 supers) had so many bees we were able to make 7 splits! Doing splits early and leaving one queen will prevent swarming from happening. Thanks for watching!

Why didn't you add a frame with a queen cell to the last hive box you inspected? You want to make an emergency queen cell from eggs?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
The swarm hive? Or the hive the swarm left from? The hive the swarm left from already had a ton of queen cells and eggs. Thanks for watching.
