I constantly make the mistake of thinking, "Oh I'll just have this on in the background and I'll get some work done..." but I can't because it's so good I'm completely distracted. This is the best version I've heard. Yundi is amazing.

Yundi Li is a great pianist. There are master pianists, grandmaster pianists, and super grandmaster pianists. You have to hear them live and close up to be sure. This performance puts him in the super grandmaster class. Van Cliburn was a super grand master. Lazar Berman in 1978, in Tallahassee and St. Petersburg Florida, was a sorcerer. I have only observed one such in six decades.

This is so beautiful. Every time I listen to this sonata, I am deeply touched. Some says yundi li's tempo is quite fast, but I think cause this is his own interpretation, this is really fresh. fresh and Everything he does is perfection. Technically perfect, and also emotions. And I think he also understand this sonata very well. I once saw a interview of Yundi li about this sonata. And he said this sonata is the life and death of the pianist. I think he has deep knowledge about this sonata. I thanks to liszt so much for making this masterpiece.

I bit more steadiness in the tempo would be necessary to make this grand sonata sound less than Liszt in fact making almost a mockery of the past. My point is that in this performance, there is too much virtuosity in relation to the content of what is printed on the score. But I must say, Yundi makes it very clear what is the climax and what should be the "low-point". That is not always easy to do on the piano. He plays well.

I am from Russia and Poland, in the US since 1964, a pianist Manhattan School of Music. I have a suggestion for you re: the tempo of the Liszt Sonata. This recording is 29.22 minutes, please record or perform at a slower tempo, such as at least 34 to 35 minutes. It will be far more effective. Continue playing as beautifully as you do, such a talent! Wish you all the success for the rest of your live. An admirer!! LBM

Yundi Li is amazing - so I have no clue why he had problems with the notorious octave passage around 2:45. Alicia de Larrocha, famous for her small hands, played these same octaves with absolute perfection. I think there's such a race to place them quickly, they 9 times out of 10, they miss not one note, but many. I would prefer a slower pace anyway. But again, Yundi Li for the most part is wonderful.
@MassimoBucciMusicista10 жыл бұрын
"Alicia de Larrocha, famous for her small hands, played these same octaves with absolute perfection" because she played slower this passage. In addition this is a live concert, not a studio recording.
@dwayneparkerUSA10 жыл бұрын
Massimo Bucci Good point. But pianists in Yundi Li's league can see the mistakes BEFORE they happen almost. After the first miss, the rule is SLOW DOWN. If your hands are not perfectly placed, it's a ripple effect and it's hard to recover, especially when dealing with nerves and live concert situations. All pianists who play this passage know this. The only way to save to the passage is to SLOW DOWN. Nowadays, playing this passage faster and faster is all about ego. Besides, there's a bohemian lilt to the octave passage that never gets emphasized because everybody is in a race to brake some record for being the fastest at playing this section. The only pianist who has played this at lightening speed, and somewhat maintained the musicality of it all has been Lang Lang. So, if you play it fast, great, you get a few wows, but it's not how you make memorable renditions that people will WANT to come back and listen to. In fact the most memorable recordings of this sonata are not played all that fast.
@sizzlinfr8 жыл бұрын
