Are the 1st and 2nd strings the same octave? I read the description saying they’re both D.

According to his interview in thai, a rythm part was written by an 8 string guitar so i guess yes

Ronnakorn Chalermsaen not only that, I recently noticed that it was evident in the video based off the interval shown on that 9-string. That interval can only be played in that shape when the strings are exactly the same pitch and octave.
