I mean, I’ve seen 100X worse on KZbin alone, let alone what I’ve seen and experienced during my own childhood that makes this “prank” look like a breath of fresh air. The real problem imo is that this is being popularized and normalized as “family fun” for all. It’s true that everyone is different and have varying tastes, but when these mothers can’t see how it upsets their children and post the sad and disappointed reactions anyway, rather than ditching it and apologizing to their kid for the dumb idea says a lot about how, even in 2023, parents aren’t doing a great job of understanding what their children need from them.

The repeated 'I love you' from the mother expecting a response boiled my blood. This is how textbook emotional abuse starts. Normalise apologising to your children when you realise you messed up. She knew her kid was upset, but instead of apologising she forced the kid to pretend she was okay. These parents are assholes. There's a difference between sprinkling some flour on your kid when you're making pancakes together and cracking an egg on their underdeveloped skull.

The little one who cried “Mommy?! I just took a shower!” really hit me. I am autistic, and getting myself or my clothing dirty when I’m feeling clean and comfortable is a quick way to send me spiraling. Hearing her distress over that specific thing gave me major second hand anxiety.

Another autistic person here! 🤚 The fact that she started quietly laughing in the video pissed me the hell off. The mess in general wouldn’t mean much to me in some aspects but the REACTION does. I can say right now if my mom or sibling did that to me,rage would be my first response,which can easily go wrong if you lack self control (Which I do),and so can make a simple ‘prank’ become a much bigger situation

@not_dannyz
@not_dannyz Жыл бұрын
exactly. there is nothing i hate more than people actively going out of their way to cause problems for other people. ESPECIALLY their kids! And for what, a quick laugh? Likes? Followers? People should not be exploiting their own CHILD's suffering for comments from complete strangers! IMO, people shouldn't even be putting their child on the internet. Because that stuff basically lasts forever, and there are tons of creeps out there! And what happens if your child grows up and finds the videos of you HUMILIATING them for views? They wouldn't trust you. They wouldn't be happy. They'd probably be really hurt that their own parents would do something like that just for random people all over the world to see. And it's already incredibly fucked up for someone to laugh at someone who is crying and did nothing wrong. So it is so wild to me that someone would do that to their own CHILD. Parents on the internet can be beyond fucked up.
@sarahshroom

that's what always gets me. like okay, if i somehow manage to give these parents benefit of the doubt, like, maybe they thought their kid or toddler would be fine with this (honestly, at 2 or 3 i MIGHT have laughed even if it surprised me, so i _could_ see a parent thinking their toddler might be okay - still wouldn't do it myself tho), how is it STILL funny when your kid is crying??? hearing that would INSTANTLY end _any_ humour in the situation. baffles me that *_parents_* hear their kid crying and keep laughing. horrible.

Yes and the confusion should not be done to people with dementia, people with psychosis or severe mental disorders, children with severe anxiety (gaslighting them into tears) or otherwise hypervulnerable people that cannot distinguish reality from their fearful thoughts. I had a delirium for a while, from sleep-deprivation and someone thought it was funny to gaslight me into thinking that a (boring) situation in the evening, sitting around with chocolatemilk and playing a boardgame, never happened. It took them 2 weeks to confess and by that time, I'd already called my therapist in tears, saying that 'it's happening again.'

Me too. My dad’s side of the family used to find it funny if I was upset or crying about something kinda stupid. Even if it was stupid, it didn’t matter. I was upset. One day my dad was telling my grandma something embarrassing I did, and I was shouting at him to stop (I was about 5 at the time) and they started laughing, and he just kept telling her and then they all started laughing. I have ADHD, so I tend to occasionally overreact to simple things. I started crying because they were laughing. Thankfully my mom noticed and snapped at my dad and grandma for laughing at me while I was crying, but it still hurt. Thankfully they’re still loving and caring. But moments like that instance have stuck with me and it makes it sting extra hard when I see parents or adults laughing at children when they’re upset over things. I remember that I never understood the pranks and was always more freaked out that they were doing mean things to me. I'd usually freeze up and cry because I was bullied at school too and didn't have anywhere safe. I'm almost 40 and my mother is still (unsuccessfully) trying to sell t-shirts with some of the oh-so-HILARIOUS things I said in response to their "jokes," like "Is my fear funny to you?" (That was in response to them jumping out of my closet one night to re-enact one of my nightmares, which they told stories about for *years* at family gatherings.) They'd probably have been extremely popular family vloggers, honestly. I haven't spoken to them in almost ten years, if anyone is here to pretend it's all just fine. That sort of behavior, taken to those sorts of extremes, is just an indicator that you're a vicious person.

Pranking your kids is a good idea in these few situations: A)The prank is funny for both of you B) the prank does not humiliate them C) the prank does not physically harm them D) the prank is age appropriate!!! Examples of age appropriate pranks: you can PLAYFULLY shout boo at a 2 year old, you can get a whoopie cushion for your 5 year old, you can create a balloon avalanche for your 7 year old (cascade of balloons falling down when they open a door), you can make toothpaste Oreos for your teenagers. You can absolutely have fun pranking your kids and BEING PRANKED BACK, but do not betray their trust. If your kid is not laughing, it’s time to apologize and re-evaluate your life!

A good rule of thumb when it comes to any kind of prank on anyone is that the person on the receiving end should find it funny once the initial shock/confusion has worn off. If it's not something they can laugh at for themselves, it's not a prank. And since an egg is a solid object that actually requires some amount of force to be broken, that's clearly not going to make a young child and *especially* not an infant laugh to be effectively whacked on the head with a breakable but still solid object. It's not a prank in those circumstances.

If they had to take another shower because they felt dirty right after they already did, that’s just terrible, though it doesn’t do much physical harm, they could be sad for having to shower again, especially because of how tiring and time consuming bathing is. My parents used to make fun of me to try and make me laugh but it never worked because I just thought they meant it. And if people keep making hurtful things into jokes, then where do we draw the line? Because at some point, if stuff like this doesn't stop, there are gonna be people out there who were taught all their life that hurting people is funny and just one big joke. And if it's all seen as a joke, that just gives bad people an excuse to be bad. It just makes things harder for everyone involved in the long run.

I saw an article on this from a child psychiatrist. To sum it up, this was more damaging than originally thought to young children and toddlers. A child who is learning the rules of the world is realizing that it's uncertain and unpredictable. But, their parents, specifically mothers are a stable constant that they can be safe around. Doing something like this messes with their understanding of the world and ruins their relationship with their parents.

We already know that abuse can disrupt children's ability to form attachments, develop empathy, etc. I'd be interested to know if there's any evidence that these "pranks" have a similar effect. Because that poor kid with the flat "I love you 😒" definitely sounds like a cynical kid who may struggle with attachments or empathy with others. Kind of reminds me of what I've learned in my comedy class. It's A LOT harder to laugh at something if the victim is young/innocent instead of the victim being the one making the joke. I think that's why a mother cracking an egg on her face is funnier than the mothers doing it on their children's faces. The biggest reason why is that well... we have empathy, and seeing someone getting hurt, being physically or emotionally while they're young/innocent, is more concerning than funny. Anyway, sorry for the long explanation.

While I do agree that her argument is bad, I don't think the kid laughed because he's desensitised to his mother causing him pain. My dad used to pick me up and pretend to throw me out the balcony whenever I was being "difficult". I would get so scared that I couldn't even cry, and that obviously solved any "tantrums". So naturally, when I had a fight with my younger cousin, I tried this technique with him (I was 12/13 and an idiot). He cried SO LOUDLY. I got a HARD lecture from my aunt for doing something so cruel, and that's when I first realised that what happened to me wasn't normal. When I told her that, she confronted him and his response was to laugh it off, that we were "too sensitive" and "couldn't take a joke." He did it multiple times since then until I was too big to pick up. I have a crippling fear of heights now and can't even get up a ladder. Thankfully my cousin doesn't even remember the incident otherwise I don't think I would've been able to forgive myself. So yeah, when children don't contact their parents anymore after gaining independence, there's usually a pretty SOLID reason for it. And it's NOT ungratefulness.

there's this episode of regular show that stuck with me and is probably the only one in the entire series i can't bring myself to like. it's the one where mordecai finds himself having to bring his gf to his parents' place and they have a family tradition of showing his past embarrassments recorded on video and he doesn't want that (obviously) because he always hated it and his mum had a long track record of driving girls away whenever he'd bring them over (by embarrassing him) the moral of the story is he got ice cream after these moments were recorded and they loved him anyway and he suddenly starts laughing along and accepts this weird tradition, but it never felt right to me. i'm not a kid anymore and i thankfully never had that growing up and it sounds fucking awful to experience as a child. i had one instance where some old videos got put on and it could've been a nice glimpse at the past but instead i saw myself come on and the room turned into "oh i can't wait to watch him do something embarassing!" and i left because i was upset and didn't have a fantastic childhood (anxious mess). I'd be uncomfortable *at my age now* if everyone gathered around to put in a VHS and "laugh at the stupid kid" who's also in the room right now and if you're not laughing you're clearly "too sensitive/soft/humourless" it feels like an insecure type of humour that people should grow out of to become completely self-assured yet some people latch onto it (and teenagers fuel the cringe compilation genre because they're ashamed of their own capacity to be cringey) and it just feels mean-spirited and it's fully fair to take issue with it, especially when it involves you and DEFINITELY when there's a literal child you can't twist your anxious child into some chad who can "take a joke", you gotta help them through their personality issues you probably inflicted on them

When I was 9 I experienced Christmas in Colombia for the first time, which involved hiring farmers to bring a pig over, slaughter said pig in front of us, and then the family would cook said pig. While it was normal for everyone else I was in hysterics. My dad took many pictures of me sobbing, red faced and puffy eyes. Then anytime family would come over or guests of any kind, he’d put on the slideshow of Christmas and laugh at my sadness. These people are fked in the head

@@spacebassist I fully agree. There's a video from my first birthday that has become infamous in my family because my parents were desperate for a smacsh cake picture/video. My mom let me eat the frosting off of a decoration, then put it back on the cake and told me to go get it (for more frosting). I got both hands in the cake, saw the mess, and started screaming. It was known basically from the moment I could be set down to lay anywhere that I hated being messy - I hated being on grass/dirt without a blanket, I hated finger painting, I hated messy food because it got on my hands. So why anyone thought having me do a smash cake was a good idea is beyond me. But 27 years later, my extended family *still* brings up the video of that day, and I just don't understand what's funny about putting a one year old in a situation you know they'll likely find distressing, and then watching them essentially have a panic attack (my screaming from that day has been described as "like someone was coming at you with a chainsaw"). I just don't see the humor in distressing a child. Nor do I see the humor in bringing up the fact that you intentionally distressed a child over two decades later.

It upsets me to see how dismissive some of these parents are to their kids very reasonable reactions. “That wasn’t very nice” and “That hurt” shouldn’t be met with laughing. I remember when my parents would do little things to “push my buttons” (violate my boundaries) and they wouldn’t stop when I asked them to. I, in all of my little kid wisdom, learned that screaming “SHUT UP” and getting them to scold me instead was the only way for them to stop. They refused to be reasonable and I learned VERY quickly that they’d only stop if I wasn’t reasonable either. You can imagine how I learned to respond when people outside of the home would push against my boundaries.

Which, that obviously wasn't what he was intending, but it still hurt me pretty bad for a while, until I became comfortable enough to regard it as just an unfunny prank he pulled that we laugh about, generally. Sometimes the problem really is just "I was looking forward to it and wanted it, but now I can't have it" and that's completely valid. The reason they're upset doesn't really matter in the long run. @@fluffystuff500 yes exactly!! I feel so bad for these kids and honestly I'm glad so many adults are starting to unlearn that behaviour and understand that feelings are valid. And not even just kids' like you said, adults' too!! Why is it so hard to spread kindness and patience to others?? Specially little ones that are still growing and learning

I used to scream and cry because my parents never listened to me, and crying was the only way I felt as if it would make them listen, but it never did. And I ended up getting grounded. Like if I told my parents “my brother hit me!!” Then if they ignored it, I would hit back, and then I’d get in trouble. It’s stupid, so stupid.

why can't people just surprise their kids on a fun way? i remember my mom used to put gifts or candy where i did my homework while i took breaks or was distracted, it made me associate homework with something good (even if i honestly don't remember it, i was like 6) i also remember the first time they did a "birthday prank", to try to summarize it as best as i can, there was this place where you could either rent a small attraction for your party (a ball pit, a trampoline, stuff like that) or you could have the party there with all of them, i thought my parents had just rented one, but then on my birthday it didn't show up! my parents told me "we're going to go there and ask what's going on", so we went, it turned out they had actually rented the place and i was going to have the party there! i barely remember the party, but i do remember the surprise and it was honestly great it really isnt that hard to be nice to your kid, what are these people thinking

a good prank for a toddler is say ‘cats say ‘woof’’ or something they know is wrong, and let them correct you, then act shocked

My mom's favorite prank was to deliberately call kids by the wrong name -- like make eye contact with the baby girl and say, "Come here, George." Perfectly harmless, gets a reaction every time.

i feel so bad for the little kids that go, "ow, that hurt!" or "that wasn't very nice!" because theyre good kids that obviously worked hard to learn effective communicating about their feelings, and how are they supposed to feel when they act maturely with adults who should be treating them with equal respect for that well done communication? idk, just bothers me

My family were really REALLY into pranking kids (I grew up in the 90s, yes, millennial here) my uncles would prank us EVERY TIME, and I honestly hated it. I think it did caused major insecurities later in life, especially because they would mock me every time I'd get scared or upset. Just because my older sister loved getting pranked and would laugh along, I ended up becoming the "scared" one in the family. I honestly think it fucked me up in a way.

I’m so sorry, that’s really awful and they shouldn’t invalidate you like that. NOT everyone likes getting pranked on and that’s fine, why can’t some people understand that? Especially for young children?

@@andifishgallery9400 I've worked with children and you get to know them and it's totally common that some of them are quite happy to be silly and joke around with the adults, while others would probably just burst into tears, and others would likely get really mad. That doesn't make them "crybabies" or "too sensitive" -- I simply wouldn't play jokes on those kids because there are other ways to include them that wouldn't make them distressed. Because I want the kids to know I'M SAFE to be around. I don't get how parents don't want their children to feel the same way about them. They'd rather be "fun mom" than "safe mom."

As an uncle myself, I couldn't imagine doing any kind of joke or prank to my nieces and nephews that would make them upset, or make them cry. When I scare them, or whatever, it's always by accident, so I make sure to reassure them, apologize, and promise that I won't do it again...hell, I even do it when they just tell me that they didn't like the joke!

When my daughter was s few months old i put on a skin care mask in front of her. I'll never forget how terrified she was, i felt awful for scaring her and i never have done a mask in front of her again. People who purposely hurt or scare their children for fun are bonkers.
