Read it properly - They didn't eat it. It's was offered as sacred thing to God before entering the hut. We don't say everything was perfect and will be perfect but not misquote and misuse our scripture. 7:48 The verse in question comes from 2.52.102 But the literal translation does not say that they (Rama, Lakshmana and Sita) ate the deer. It just says, they killed 4 types of deer, took what is pure, and in a hungry state, they proceeded to take shelter under a tree. It is obvious, that if you think "took what is pure" also means "ate the deer (or parts of it)", then why would they seek shelter under a tree in a hungry state? In Hinduism, if in case u ever read geeta, there's a mention to avoid non veg food and even in ayurveda, it's particularly stated to not to eat non veg food for your own health (with the exact reason)and in Hinduism all being is same. So we can not harm any animal in the name of taste preference because i don't want to take my health at risk from covid and many bird flu etc. i don't understand this wokism when some random American organisation like Peta come and start blubring in English to protect animals then everyone gave them awards and same is written in our ayurveda and geeta, people started mocking by saying conservative person. See i have no right to force anyone to stop eating but i advise to stop eating animals as in recent study, scientists also stated vegetarian food to be good and healthier option becuz we are not living in stone age time. I am proud that i am Vegetarian and it our DHARMA, so no movie have any rights to manipulate us because of our food preferences! In ancient times, everyone ate meat. All holy rituals involved meat. There was no concept of vegetarianism at that time. Vegetarianism is a later innovation under jain influence. Vegetarianism was promoted by Kushans (mongolian invaders) in North India to weaken the Indians mentally and physically, so that they are easy to rule. But, vegetarianism is a paap in Sanatan.

There were also pure vegetarians and vegans. Typically, the Brahmins and Vaishyas were largely vegetarians. The Kshatriyas and Shudras ate meat to various extents. Contrary to current raging trends among Indians who say that beef was very popular in ancient times, cows were not killed on a regular basis for food. The cow and bull are both very revered in the Vedas, and the cow is called aghnyA (not to be killed). Typically, the meat of large animals such as the cow, bull and horse may have been available only after they were sacrificed in large public yajnas such as agniShToma, atirAtra, rAjasUya, sautrAmaNi, vAjapeya, ashvamedha. It was extremely expensive to perform these yajnas, and it was very rare to see one of these performed. Hence, the sacrificing of large animals was also very rare. Moreover, the whole idea of killing animals in yajnas only started in the later period as Vedic culture grew and became more “commoditized”. This is also in agreement with the traditional belief that the whole ritual of yajnas began only in the tretA yuga, which is the second age (as also seen in Mundaka Upanishad “tretAyAm bahudhA santatAni”, i.e. the yajnas grew to be large in number during the tretA age). In the entire Rig Veda, there is no clear mention of animal sacrifice during a yajna. There is also no mention of any of the rishis eating meat, which doesn’t mean they didn’t, but it only means that at least the spiritually-minded people had mostly given up eating meat regularly. As seen in the Chandogya Upanishad, one of the vows of a person who has realized the Atman-Brahman unity, is to never eat meat (मज्ज्ञो नाश्नीयात् majño nāśnīyāt ). The only things offered in a yajna in the Rig Veda were evidently of two categories: havis (raw grains, raw milk, produce, honey, etc.) and pAka (cooked food like grain cakes (puroDAsha), curds (dadhi), butter (sarpi), ghee (Ajyam, ghRtam), etc). However, in later Vedic texts such as Brahmanas, we see very elaborate rituals involving the sacrifice of many different kinds of animals. Again, most of the yajnas requiring animal sacrifice were mandated only for Kshatriyas. At the same time, the old Brahmana texts already provide alternatives to animals in yajnas. There is mention of animal figures made from rice or wheat flour, which were substituted for real animals. It is evident from early Vedic texts such as dharmasUtras that the rishis made efforts to indirectly reduce the eating of meat in society (or at least for brahmins). For example, there are rules such as: अभक्ष्यो ग्राम्यकुक्कुटः अभक्ष्यो ग्राम्यशूकरः (abhakShyo grAmyakukkuTah abhakShyo grAmyashUkarah - the domesticated hen and domesticated pig are forbidden). This implies that the wild hen and wild pig are permitted. But it also means that you have to go into the forest and hunt them, which is far more difficult than just slaughtering readily available chickens and pigs in the village. Thus, indirectly we are coaxed into eating meat less frequently. पञ्च पञ्चनखाः भक्ष्याः (pañca pañcanakhAh bhakShyAh - only five animals who have five toes are permitted). There are various guesses in the commentary texts about the five five-toed animals. But they would include animals such as the porcupine, chameleon, mongoose, etc. These are animals that are either hard to hunt, or very unappetizing to most people. Thus, again, indirectly, by restricting the list of permitted animals, the rishis tried to discourage people from eating meat. And, of course, the well-known Manu Smriti has a lot to say against meat-eating on the grounds of compassion towards animals. So Vedic Hinduism internally had its own recognition of compassion/non-violence (ahimsA/dayA) towards animals and restrictions on meat-eating. It is blatantly wrong to say that Vedic Hinduism was insensitive to this topic, when it was able to express such sublime and lofty spiritual philosophy as the Atman-Brahman realization. The picture often painted by Hinduphobists is a wanton and ruthless culture of animal sacrifice and gluttonous meat-eating. If that were the truth, the rishis wouldn’t be able to arrive at the conclusion that all creatures have the same Atman-Brahman oneness. After having this realization, there is no way to escape the realization of compassion towards all creatures. No doubt, Jainism also contributed to making the general cultural environment more conducive for vegetarianism. But Hinduism was never about enforcing extremes. For example, the warrior class (Kshatriyas) and the labor class (Shudras) needed meat for their physically demanding work. It would be unfair to deny them basic bodily needs in the name of some extremist philosophy. Again, we need to distinguish between the practices and habits of the Hindu population at large, versus the Hindu scriptures which represent the highest philosophies and views of the greatest Hindu minds. We do not have religious police (unlike Saudi Arabia) who go around beating people and enforcing religious laws. Our dharmashAstras were very gentle in non-criminal matters. In summary, there were always people who ate meat, but even since the earliest times, Vedic rishis were trying to convince the general population to limit meat-eating.

There’s plenty of mention of food in the Valmiki Ramayan, especially: Sita said:- I shall dwell in the forest bereft of people for 14 years living on honey, roots and fruits and leaving off eating meat - like a muni. (Ramayana 2:20:29) Sita said:- “O goddess (Ganga)! After returning to the city of Ayodhya, I shall offer you a thousand pots of spirituous liquor and meat with cooked rice well prepared for the solemn rite.” (Ramayana. 2:52:89) Rama said:- “O Lakshmana! Bring the meat of an antelope. We shall perform a purificatory ceremony while entering the house. This ceremony should be done by those who wish to live long.” (Ramayana 2:56:22) Rama and Lakshmana along with Sita, having auspicious characteristics, satisfied the spirits by garlands obtained in the forest, by fruits roots and cooked meat, by water, by prayers as uttered in the sacred texts (Vedas), by sacred grass, by fuel and Kusa grass and then entered the auspicious leaf-hut. (Ramayana 2:56:35) After uttering thus, Guha the king of Nishadas took fish, meat and honey as offerings and approached Bharata. (Ramayana 2:84:10) Guha said:- “Here are the roots and fruits gathered by my tribe as well as fresh and dried meat of great quality and of various kinds, and all a produce of the forest.” (Ramayana 2:84:17) Sita to Ravana:- "Rest here for a moment comfortably, and soon my husband will return bringing plentiful forest produce, after killing stags, mongooses, wild boars he will bring meat, aplenty. (Ramayana 3:47:22b, 23) Make what you want of this. I personally think folks making these films are doing so on purpose to court controversy and those complaining are idiots as well.
