Anne Clark :
For more than 30 years Anne Clark has held a unique place in contemporary music
Combining literary, socially engaged texts with innovative and genre-breaking music, she has covered every kind of style, while at the same time maintaining her own identity on each and every recording, whether it be the samples (before sampling became a concept) and electronically treated acoustics of The Sitting Room (1982), to the ground-breaking analogue synth classics of Sleeper In Metropolis (1983) and Our Darkness (1984).
Consistently looking for new ways of expression and communication through the emotion of music and language, Anne seeks to not only challenge herself but her audience also.

Imagine the scene: West Berlin, 1984. Some underground club. This music is playing loud while outside is raining heavily through the neon-illuminated night. You are an undercover agent of some western country intelligence service and you task is to protect a clueless yet crucial person from a kgb assassin you know is about to strike. The scene will go on with some hand-to-fight, some bullets flying and a car chase under the rain with some high performance car (Audi Quattro, Porsche 911 turbo or whatever you decide...).

Only people in their 50's and more could do that. The youngs today have no clue about the 80's Cold War Era and microfilms beyond Rhin river huh? Or people trying to cross that infamous wall in Berlin, risking their lives to cross to reach the Federal German Republic, escaping from the RDA taken by the communists...A great movie shows all that in "Atomic Blonde". OOOhhh God I wanna go back to the 80's again!!!!

Can't believe David Harrow is not even mentioned once, he deserves credit being fully responsible for the music score on Sleeper in Metropolis. He wrote, performed, mixed and co-produced on loads of Anne Clarks recordings: Changing Places (Red Flame) 1984 Joined Up & Writing (Red Flame) 1984 Sleeper in Metropolis (Ink Records) 1984 Our Darkness (Red Flame) 1985 Pressure Points (Red Flame & Virgin) 1985 Wallies (10 Records) 1985 Sleeper in Metropolis (Ink Records) 1987 Wallies (Ink Records) 1988 Hope Road (Ink Records) 1991 Anne Clark is great as a poet and writer, but David Harrow was the one who perfected the combination with analogue synthesized music.

When watching this video, I was totally fascinated with Anne's work. Many newer songs are not really my taste, but the first three albums are great. "Hopeless Cases" also has its top songs. Maybe my taste changes, so the albums after Hopeless Cases could come into focus in a few years.

Holy hell, this got to have been an influence on Rammstein. Listening to this some time ago on the radio I was super confused because the beat was so familiar. Had to go back and listen to Deutschland and then this another time, but the similarity in the beat is striking.

Through these city nightmares you'd walk with me A travers cette ville de cauchemars tu marches avec moi And we'd talk of it with idealistic assurance Et nous parlons d'elle avec l'assurance d'idéalistes That it wouldn't tear us apart Qu'elle nous séparerait jamais We'd keep our heads above the blackened water Que nous garderions nos têtes au-dessus de l'eau noircie But there's no room for ideals in this mechanical place Mais il n'y a pas de place pour les idéaux en cet endroit mécanique And you're gone now Et tu es parti maintenant Through a grimy window that I can't keep clean Par une fenêtre encrassée que je ne peux pas garder propre Through billowing smoke that's swallowed the sun Par la fumée qui se gonfle et avale le soleil You're nowhere to be seen Nulle part tu ne peut être vu Do you think our desires still burn Penses-tu que nos désirs brûleraient toujours I guess it was desires that tore us apart Je suppose que ce sont nos désirs qui nous ont déchirés There has to be passion Il doit y avoir de la passion A passion for living, surviving de la passion pour vivre, survivre And that means detachment Et cela signifie prendre du recul Every-body has a weapon to fight you with Tout le monde a une arme pour te combattre To beat you with when you are down te battre avec quand tu es parterre There were too many defence between us Il y avait trop de défiance entre nous Doubting all the time Du Doute tout le temps Fearinf all the time De la peur tout le temps Doubting all the time Du Doute tout le temps Fearinf all the time De la peur tout le temps That like these urban nightmares Comme ces cauchemars urbains We'd blacken each other skies Nous nous noircirions les cieux When we passed the subway we tried to ignore our fate there Quand nous passions devant le métro nous avons essayé d'ignorer notre destin Of written threats on endless walls De menaces écrites sur ces immenses murs Unjustified crimes carried on stifled calls Des crimes injustifiés ont continué dans des murmures étouffés Would you walk with me now through this pouring rain Pourrais-tu te promener avec moi maintenant a travers cette pluie torrentielle It used to mingle with our tears then dry with the hopes elle se mélangeait souvent avec nos larmes qui s'asséchaient et nos espoirs That we left behind que nous laissions derrière It rains even harder now . Our Darkness - Nos Ténèbres : Through these city nightmares you'd walk with me À travers ces cauchemars de cité tu as été marcher avec moi And we'd talk of it with idealistic assurance Et nous avons parlé de tout ça avec une assurance idéaliste That it wouldn't tear us apart En pensant que ça ne nous déchirait pas We'd keep our heads above the blackened water Nous gardions nos têtes au-dessus de l'eau assombrie But there's no room for ideals in this mechanical place Mais il n'y a aucun endroit pour les idéaux dans cet endroit mécanique And you're gone now, gone now Et tu es parti.e maintenant, parti.e maintenant Through a grimy window that I can't keep clean À travers une fenêtre crasseuse que je ne peux garder propre Through billowing smoke that's swallowed the sun À travers un panache de fumée qui a avalé le soleil You're nowhere to be seen Tu n'apparais plus nulle-part Do you think our desires still burn? Penses-tu que nos désires brûlent toujours? I guess it was desires that tore us apart Je suppose que c'était ces désirs qui nous ont séparé.e.s There has to be passion, passion Il faut bien de la passion, passion A passion for living, surviving Une passion pour vivre, survivre And that means detachment Et cela signifie du détachement Every-body has a weapon to fight you with Chaque_corps a une arme pour te combattre To beat you with when you are down Pour te frapper quand tu es au plus bas There were too many defences between us Il y avait bien trop de moyens de défense entre nous Doubting all the time, fearing all the time En doutant tout le temps, apeuré.e tout le temps Doubting all the time, fearing all the time En doutant tout le temps, apeuré.e tout le temps That like these urban nightmares Que comme ces cauchemars urbains We'd blacken each other skies Nous obscurcirions nos cieux respectifs When we passed the subways Quand nous sommes passé devant les métros We tried to ignore our fate there Nous avons essayé d'ignorer notre destin posé là Of written threats on endless walls Ces menaces écrites sur des murs sans fins Unjustified crimes carried in stifled calls Crimes injustifiés emportés dans des appels étouffés Would you walk with me now Veux-tu marcher avec moi maintenant Through this pouring rain À travers cette pluie battante It used to mingle with our tears Qui avait l'habitude de se mêler à nos larmes Then dry with the hopes that we left behind Puis te sécher dans les espoirs que nous avons abandonné It rains even harder now... @Antonio Howard Indeed it was. I was good friends with the owner (Dave Medusa) , manager (Rodney Rushing), and several of the DJs (including my ex-husband, Bud Sweet) and worked there at the front door and juice bars for a few years. I also bartended at several of the clubs for about 10 years during that time period and wouldn’t trade it for anything...the club scene was awesome in the 80s!
