Be forewarned, there are some concentration camp scenes in this video.
So this video is based on the 2001 two-part ABC miniseries, "Anne Frank: The Whole Story" - because the biography on which the film was based (by Melissa Muller) was not sanctioned by the Anne Frank Foundation, no quotes could be used from Anne's famous diary. However, even without that, we are given a very complete picture of Anne's life before and after she began writing her diary. We see her before, during and after she went into hiding with her family, the Van Pels family, and Fritz Pfeffer. I recommend this miniseries (it is on DVD), as it is very powerfully moving.
This song seemed to fit because so many people love Anne for so many years after she is tragically no longer walking this earth, but her message through her diary lives on, thanks to Miep Gies (portrayed by Lili Taylor in the film), who not only was one of the helpers in protecting the members of the Secret Annex but who discovered Anne's diary on the floor after the arrests and kept them safe. (Miep passed away last year at the age of 100). Also, Anne's father, Otto Frank (portrayed by Sir Ben Kingsley), who honored Anne's wish to publish her diary after the war. Hannah Taylor-Gordon's portrayal of Anne is one of the best I've seen - not only does she resemble the real Anne but she played her so honestly, as a flawed yet admirable young girl, living in such cramped conditions during such a dangerous time. The rest of the cast is also excellent. I was thinking about this movie many days after it first aired.
Anne's life, like so many others were tragically taken away by the Holocaust, yet their stories are remembered and told as a way of not only inspiration but hopefully spreading awareness to fight against prejudice and discrimination, as was Otto Frank's goal when he formed the Anne Frank Foundation and continually shared his daughter's diary with people around the world. Keep a tissue handy, I know I needed one in watching the movie and making the video.
