Making an early appearance in this Beethoven anniversary year is a very special new album. It couples the composer’s Seventh Symphony, op.92 with the Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello, op.56, the latter work featuring three of today’s most renowned classical artists and Beethoven interpreters - Anne-Sophie Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma and Daniel Barenboim. The acclaimed West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, meanwhile, gives vibrant, richly nuanced performances of two works central to the 2020 celebrations.

Some think it’s the worst and dullest work of Beethoven, that he didn’t have enough experience composing orchestral music and concertos. I always loved the Triple, its dynamics, tenderness and beautiful weaving between solo-instruments and orchestra. It’s always the performers and conductors, that make or break its success. My absolute favorite Triple was Russian trio of Oistrakh, Knushevitsky, Oborin, but when I listened to It performed by Mutter, Ma and Barenboim I fell in love with Triple all over again. Superb job!

Thank you for expressing my own thoughts so well! For me, the Triple Concert is an outstanding and one of the best ever musical creations on Earth. When musically educated people listen more by their mind, they may find some deficiencies in this work of Beethoven, but if you listen to it by your heart and soul - it is the pure joy of life. And indeed, only truly great artists, like the three ones here, are capable of breathing life into such an unusual and demanding work. I have also greatly enjoyed the "younger", fresher approach to this work by Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma and Barenboim, which differs so much from the reference productions by the Richter, Oistrakh and Rostropovich trio.

This is the second recording of the triple concerto by Yo Yo Ma and Anne Sophie Mutter. They first recorded it in 1980, when Mutter was only seventeen. The pianist on that occasion was Mark Zeltser, a young Moldovan - American. The orchestra was the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan. That recording being forty years old, may be now deleted. It would be interesting to compare the two interpretations.
