He is a brave man. He did not want to go on stage as the snowy owl to replace that awful Billy Andrews. He had always been scared of crowds, and of being the centre of attention. Michael had understood. He had said, "You don't have to participate." Matthew remembered Michael's words. He thought to himself, "Right. I don't have to participate. But Anne needs me. I will do this." Nobody was prouder than Marilla that night, because she alone know how much courage Matthew had needed. Even his speech in Anne's dorm room took courage. I can write what could have been Marilla's next line: "Anne: behold this man, Matthew Cuthbert, my brother. What a fine man he is."

I watched this series in Latin American Spanish with my mother, and every time this scene comes on, we both cry. Now, watching it in the original language has made me cry too. He's such a lovable character, and the actor who portrays him does so flawlessly, transcending any language barrier and touching my heart everytime.

What was Marilla reacting to when she sat down on the bed at 0:08? Matthew is so sweet in this scene, giving Anne the money to come back and forth to Green Gables. You can tell that he's emotional and trying to explain to Anne why he'd been out of sorts with her before she left before he starts crying again and gets through it and he and Anne hug. My favorite scene from this episode, even though it was a bit sad, was when Marilla came back from town and was bringing him up to speed on what Mrs. Thomas had said in the letter and then she could tell that he was upset and unintentionally made it worse when she said "I hope you're pondering your insensitivity to our child." and then sat down on the bed with him when he started crying and rubbed his back for a bit until he had settled down some and he said that he didn't want Anne to worry about them and that he wanted her to step into the shoes of her own life and Marilla told him that he needed to talk to Anne and tell her how he really felt and to be quick about it, otherwise, he would lose her twice and he was still too upset to do that, but that talk that Marilla had with him helped. I love the new version of Matthew. He's more open with his emotions than the old version was.

I love how Matthew lurks in the background waiting for his opening and then gives Anne the money and explains why he was so standoffish with Anne before she left and gets through it like a champ even though he's nearly ready to cry. Marilla was so proud of him for explaining the reason why he had been standoffish with Anne.

@Laura Saxon Right! Matthew hates being the centre of attention. He did it, just as you say, and then Marilla looks like she's about to say something like, "Anne, behold this man my brother."
