One of the most beautiful songs ever written....and no one could ever sing it like Al jarreau.

While it's one of his sadder songs (and quite possibly one of the most beautiful he has ever sung), it's in my opinion no coincidence that on the Jarreau album this song is followed by 'Love is Waiting', kind of as if he intentionally tries to make you aware of love's heartbreaking consequences when things go wrong, but no matter what happens, love is and will always be... waiting 😉

Safe to say, Lubbock was truly inspired when he penned this breathtaking piece. And I believe NOBODY could have interpreted it better than Al Jarreau. There is a fabulous instrumental version is on youtube. Check out the Harp / Bass rendition, by 2tone, which is quite beautiful.

jim, I dunno about intonation issues with AJ, he's using extensions and chordal subs here which sound fine to me. Too bad the string chart wasn't done on this concert since that orchestration was so good. Well, everybody has an off night. The album that this tune came from is still a gem in my view. He changed his corner of the music biz and turned a lot of heads. Great stuff.

I love this tune, and his recording of it is stunning but this performance is a bit of a mess. I heard him recently and there were serious intonation issues - seems like it was happening in 1997 too. Not bad, just not as good as I expected. But, a beautiful song.
