I wish you had partnered with Chinese-speaking individuals who could've helped you with the research for the red dog. I enjoy your thorough breakdowns of each animal you interact with, which made the lack of information you had on the red dog a little bit frustrating. These dogs, as you said, were developed at the same time- so they should have comparable lines of history to pull from that are probably more accessible in the east. It would've been cool for you to have worked with other experts who were able to tell you about the Shandong hound's history to have it be incorporated in the video as well. I hope I get to see you interact with more international breeds in the future!

@@kalahne Then why call it the "Chinese Red Dog"? Like calling it the German Swaztica Dog because of what Red actually means as a symbol to such a repressive regime trying to establish legitimacy and authority outside it's borders more than it has before. In the simplest way my comment is a tension to what the country is in and the references of it's authority and power through the constant use of this color representing the blood of it's victims when our world needs to push away from that, finally after a century of such horrors. The "Shandong Hound" actually sounds legit. I think it is a dumb and naïve name honestly " Red Dog", like " "look at me I am the greatest here, the color of gore and from here!". The reference in how I used the German example is pretty accurate. My love for China and it's people and struggling culture though apart from what my comment has been saying. China is being held in bad hands of a system saying publically that it's people know what it wants when they do not even have a choice. From here you can say what you like in return, but in China I would not be able to tell you that because of the proud red system it has.

As far as what was noticed observing the red dog being hesitant, I think that reflects more on the trainer. I would think that in the UK, there are less experienced trainers training red dogs that Dobermans. I say that because red dogs are relatively new to the UK and there must be longer established trainers training Dobermans. Of course I could be wrong but you would have to observe a variety of training centres to draw a better conclusion. I think that you were unfair to compare these dogs now because the red dog is so new and you made so many assumptions. If many if your assumptions were wrong then the result could be different. I do love Dobermans, but am anxious to encounter some red dogs, from what you said about their friendly demeanour. Thanks for another informative video.

In Germany the Dobermann is just called the Dobermann, in America it is called the Doberman Pinscher. Dobermann's are simply fabulous dogs! Some of the health issues you mentioned are very specific to only some (few) Dobes. DCM is very much the worst problem and does sadly affect many Dobes, but hip dysplasia is not very common (talking about European dogs). Personally I have never seen a Dobe with demodicosis (breeding and showing and training Dobes for 30 years), it is true that blue Dobes (not accdepted in Germany/Europe and other FCI countries) can have severe skin and hair problems, but that is caused by skin dilution alopecia which is related to coat colour. Nor have I ever heard of a Dobe with gastric torsion. I have heard of Dobes with osteosarcoma, but not commonly. von Willebrand disease is a genetic disease which can be completely controlled by breeding only vWD free or carrier dogs to each other. Wobblers has also become more uncommon that it used to be. This is not to say that no Dobes have health problems, but if you get your Dobe from an ethical (registered) breeder you can avoid many of these issues. In Germany for example, it has been the case that in order to breed both parents must pass a ZTP (fit for breeding test), this is a specific character (including bite work) and conformation test and includes HD scores. In recent years certain health criteria have been added to the ZTP - vWD status and DCM status. Only dogs who pass this test and have the 'correct' health criteria are 'allowed' to be bred. Not all countries have this requirement, but all serious ethical breeders test their dogs for at least HD, vWD and DCM. DCM is tested annualy.

They were made about 100 years ago. Considering how much DNA has been lost in all breeds in the last 100 years, and depending on the selection process that was used for this breed, having no currently recognizable Great Dane DNA in their current genome doesn't rule it out as a founding breed. What were her DNA results otherwise?

I grew up near the area where the Laizhou Hong is named after but never knew this breed. China actually has many dog breeds of its own but not recognized or well preserved. Due to strict restrictions and lack of animal protection laws, many breeds have lost throughout the years. I particular like the yellow spitz like ones Chinese farmers keep, they look quite similar to many other spitz breeds such as Finnish Spitz, and they are loyal, healthy and low maintenance, they don't require much but they offer everything should the owners need. Back in the day every farmer had one chained up in their yard and they barked like crazy when strangers came. They eat leftovers and sleep in their cages outside.

The thing about most of these health issues, is that they are concentrated in breeds due to the way that they're bred and the shrinking gene pools. The CRD (as an unregistered breed) should still have a healthy gene pool, which means that it will have very few genetic health issues and the lifespan of 15 years is actually very likely to be accurate. Dogs lifespans have consistently been decreasing across all pure breeds for years because of the shrinking gene pools. The more Diversity, the longer the lifespan. Add to that the fact that 60%+ of Dobermans have DCM, and that that number is only increasing with every generation, the CRD should have been a clear winner for health. The state that Dobermans are in, the only way to save them is to outcross to suitable breeds, backbreed to Dobermans and continue to breed the offspring selecting for the Doberman traits with care taken to keep the genetic diversity up. But as it is unlikely that anyone is going to do that, the Doberman is doomed to go extinct. As a side note, I personally know a Leonberger breeder who is very careful to keep her pairings as unrelated as possible, whose dogs regularly make it to 14 years. For giant pure breed dogs that's really good, especially considering the average lifespan of a Leonberger is 8-9 years. Almost all of her dogs reach 12 at least. So don't be so quick to doubt that the CRD can make it to 15.

We are learning more all the time. I'm getting my CRD puppy from Genesis Kennels in December. The ones that have been getting Embark'd have been coming up around 55% GSD. It's questionable whether there is actually ANY Great Dane. It hasn't shown up in any profiles I've seen. Chinese Dogs in the mix include the Kunming, Japanese wolf green dog, and Guangxi Hound. These are showing up abroad. They are not in Embark's database. Jindo is showing up in Embark's database in lieu of Guangxi Hound. The two breeds are closely related. Eventually, Embark will have enough of them in their database that they have their own unique genetic markers.

@notsosilentmajority12 жыл бұрын
Another example of a Chinese knock-off, lol. Just kidding. Actually, according to the video, the Chinese Red Dogs Dogs were initially bred by German soldiers in China. Does that make them Chinese or European? Considering that the vast majority of breeds used for the Red Dog are European dogs anyway, they really seem to be more of a Euroepan breed than Chinese. Obviously, there are several different breeds mixed together to make the beautiful Chinese Red Dog/Laizhou Hong but looking at the dogs in the video, they almost look like Doberman mixed equally with GSD. The ears are GSD all the way and the muzzle looks GSD as well. The coloring shows the Doberman and similar breed colors, like the Rottweiler, etc.. They really do look like a perfectly mixed GSD and Doberman but they seem to be lacking a little bit of trainability in this small sample size. Well, the Doberman is one of the smartest dog breeds in the world, along with the GSD and Rotti. If there is a little too much Great Dane or other large dog with a bit of independent streak or a little less intelligence, it would need to bred out because a serious protection dog cannot hesitate when it comes to commands. I wonder how hard the Laizhou Hong is to house train when a puppy and how many reps it takes to teach them basic commands.?.? They have great ears, they probably would look great with a docked tail. If they have the brains and can become highly trained, they seem like they could be a very interesting dog breed. There is always so much to learn with any new potentially recognized breed. How are they with children overall? How long do they really live? What are their usual health issues? How is their prey drive, since the dogs in the video needed prodding to take a bite, that's not a great sign for a possible working/protection dog. They definitely are interesting but I'd like to see the time and energy be put into fixing the American Doberman and working out the health concerns for all Dobermans.

We understood you prefer doberman, in general. Not too fair comparison.

Chinese red dog is the ideal dog doberman wants to become minus the surgeries...

The Doberman punches well above its weight. Stronger and faster than other dogs of its size and even much bigger. Same with the bite force. They are much better with ears and tails. The big floppy ears act like radars. Mine is a master mole catcher among hunting much more. He's a killing machine. He thinks, sees, tastes and smells in binary 🤣... The tail allows for much better (natural) agility, balance and muscle structure at the rear. Fact!

In the UK they have now passed a bill to ban the import of cropped dobies. Once that comes into force next year I can see a lot more people turning to the Red Dog for their short haired guard dogs! The floppy ears are nice but don't sit right with me as an alert guard dog.
