I think you guys have it exactly right. Helmut Koester also came down on the side of Marcionite innovation with respect to "gospel" terminology, but Marcion as follower in this regard always made more sense to me. T. C. Skeat, in one of his last papers ("Irenaeus and the Four-Gospel Canon," NovT 1992), argued that the appearance of the four gospels as a codex reinforced an interdependent authority and status among them. He was willing to date that development to no later than ~170, but he was typically conservative in his judgment. Likely it goes back decades earlier.

It seems important (as Dr. Mason has pointed out) to note that the original usage of the term "euangelion" referred to Paul's particular gospel (Paul called it "my gospel"), which was his doctrine of salvation by faith alone, made possible by Christ's sacrificial death. This Pauline gospel is quite different from the message in the four gospels.

"by faith alone" never appears in Paul's letters. The only place in the NT that phrase appears is as part of a rejection in James 2. I think the gospels and Paul have a more similar message than you suggest... if we remove our Lutheran blinders.

@@newtestamentreview9931 Thanks for replying. I can agree to disagree on this,🥳since I'm in accord with S.N. Mason's (U. Groningen) view that Paul's "good news" influenced Mark but Paul's theology of salvation was very different from the other synoptics. I should add that I completely disagree with Paul's soteriology, and think Jesus would, too.

How many scholars still defend the thesis that Mark didn't ORIGINALLY begin at Mark 1:1?

Why are all the non canonical Bible studies unlisted?
