I feel like Hannigan was so underrated in the 2014 version. She had everything she wanted in life and in the fraction of a second it was all ripped from her grasps. Then she had to foster kids just to get by, yes she could’ve been kinder to them but she has a reason to be salty. Honestly I’m surprised she hadn’t tried to end it all, especially with the choice of words she uses, not just the “please kill me I’m not singing I’m asking” but also the “i slipped through the cracks and now I can’t seem to find my way back.” And then the added guilt of sending Annie with two complete strangers- you could see that she was genuinely concerned for her, and more so when she broke character and asked the other girls for help, honestly she’s the queen of character development and she deserves more than what she was given in life.

This song in particular definitely demonstrates the difference between the portrayal of the 1982 Hannigan and the 2014 Hannigan. While the 1982 version had more of a comedic flair to it to give her this “oh, she’s just a miserable old woman who’s cranky and hates kids!” sense which definitely works with that adaptation of the film. Whereas, the 2014 version shows a different version of her, trading out some of the emotional repression for instead outward displays of genuine anguish and frustration, as if Hannigan is reaching a breaking point in her life, as well as more lines about her unfulfilled dreams. It very much gives her more of a “This is a woman whose life did not turn out the way she wanted to, and she’s in very deep pain and emotional anguish as a result of that” appeal to the audience.

Cameron Diaz is not the best singer? True. Was she a fabulous actor overall? Absolutely! She was the comedic relief in my opinion. Besides, I like to imagine that the off singing fits her character as a FORMER and UNSUCCESSFUL singer. If you watched the movie to the very end, Cameron Diaz tries to sing tomorrow and everyone stares at her as if she's the worst singer ever. Her voice fits the character for THIS VERSION!!!

Thank you. Just explained that to a bigot above. People on here being close minded purists and I hate it. I hate purists. I will cuss out the next person who says that because they need to shut up. If hate this movie they need to get the fuck off this site and quite causing drama for those who like it. 90s baby here (93) I totally agree with you! I think this has more of a better rhythm than the original and the 1982 version. No shade to any of those 2 movies because they are just as good, but I like this movie a lot more because it has more up beat of different songs.

I love the production of the song... The constant ha ha has of the girls in the background, and the chorus full of anger and frustration. A very accurate way to modernize the classic version.

Cameron Diaz is such a good actress and I mean she has a good voice in this song, so like...this is my fave version of Miss Hannigan because the over exaggerated movements are so funny yet also add emotion to the song and I absolutely love the song itself.

That was not what I expected... I like Cameron Diaz, but she's really miscast. I'd happily scrub floors for cute Cameron as my foster mum. She should be playing Grace instead. I also thought it was going to be still sung in a musical theater style like 1982 movie, I didn't know this was a pop adaptation. And the kids are so bratty... aren't the girls supposed to be loveable?
@songthief95609 жыл бұрын
TifaMadfess I don't think a different or modern setting is necessarily bad either. You can have an update, and it can be good or bad depending on the dramatic choices you make within that setting. I'm not saying Annie, deserves all the hate its been getting, I haven't seen it. But casting and most of all the music in musical can make or break or it.

***** They updated the songs to reflect the change in time period from that of the stage show. The songs to me were not changed that much. I was still singing along with no problem at all. They updated the songs some to reflect present day. The original was set in 1933 and the songs were done in a 1930's style with lots 30's references in the songs. So when you update the setting you must update the music that's why its called a updated version. As a fan of original 1982 movie I was very pleased with this movie and how did the songs.
@matthewbennett99289 жыл бұрын
***** I swear you live to put things down that are not done as you please. If you change the time period you kind of have to update the lyrics. This new movie is NOT suppose to be a replica of the old Broadway show Most people who hate this movie are racist anyways and then you have purists who can stand any change. This movie is meant for the current generation. Times have change and the movie reflects that. The idea that you can not update a classic is ignorant and stupid. People who hate this movie because it was"changed" are close minded. A lot of people really enjoyed this movie including fans of the original Broadway show and WFI this movie was done by some Hollywood's greatest talent. Will Smith, Jay Z and Sia who updated the songs. So Sia is very talented and I would not call her Moron that woman is very talented. This movie was also nominated for two Golden Globes for Best Actress and Best original song. The composers of the original Broadway show supported the changes made to the music and even cried when they heard it. Aileen Quinn also loved updated version. So are original composers of musical morons for liking the changes?
@matthewbennett99289 жыл бұрын
***** and if people want to enjoy the movie please let them. They did use a lot of the original lyrics not all of them but quite a few. Maybe, Hard Knock Life, Tomorrow were barely touched. Easy Street has a few changed lyrics but most them are the same as the original and I Don't Anything But You has the same lyrics but it as a different melody. So I rest my case. People were singing along in the theater. So that's it. What's done is done. I am really quite tired of arguing over a stupid movie and that's all it is a movie and if people do not like then they do not have to watch it that's very simple. I think people getting pissed off over a fictional story is quite stupid. Its just Annie its not like Annie is greatest story or musical anyways. People act this Shakespeare or something. People just need get over it. The original 1982 movie got a lot of hate and now its a classic so case closed.

I'm watching it right now, and smiling, I don't care what anyone says, if they like the older versions that's up to them, if they like this new one, that's cool too, personally I love this one and the one with Carol Burnett. At times there are flaws in pretty much everything, but that's life, it's not a bed of roses without a few thorns. Your opinion is one crayon that you use to color your canvas of life. I'm happy with this, I think that Cameron did a good job, and it could always be worse. Yes, I have a super positive outlook, that's just how I am, I might be 4 foot 10 1/4 inches, but I can do big things to change my world, starting with spreading every ounce of positive I have. I don't think it's horrendous, it's got something special to it, different lyrics, yes, length is different, yes, but why just single out Cameron, she's just playing the part to the best she felt she could. Just leave it at "she tried her best" and move on, because she finished the movie, it's done, you don't have to watch it if you don't like it. Stay happy everyone :)

I don't think the director knows the difference between a musical number and a music video
@matthewbennett99289 жыл бұрын
Its a modern update of Annie. The original was set in 1933. She does want to be celebrity in this version so a music video number doea make sense when you put that into consideration.
