This song reminds me of my mother. She died when I was 6-years-old. I grew the wings to fly away from my grandmother, though loving, was smothering and mean at times. Today, I'm on my own and doing fine.

Well done you 👏👏. Never be manipulated..I’m so sad you’d lost your mum so early . My son never knew his father , I lost my husband while I was pregnant carrying him . He is 24 now, and a fine man . 😉

I started singing when I was 3, and this is the first song I sang. I'm 11 now, and looking back at this song makes me remember how happy music makes me. I used to sing this in the car with my mom and she'd always clap for me after it ended. I always felt so free when I sang this...it was so amazing. And I'm not surprised it still has that same effect on me. It's 9 pm, and I'm singing this at the top of my lungs. I don't care about anyone hearing me, I just wanna sing it to make myself happy.

During a 6 month gig in Plano,TX (as a NJ/NYC Dancer) I was asked to choreograph & coach a young dancer to audition for a dance drill team in TX. We Chose LITTLE BIRD! It had (IMHO) a Strident, Upbeat & Confident Tone! And may I say This Girl Worked Her Everything To Meet Our Ambitions! I Was Back Home In NYC When She Informed Me That She Won "FIRST KICKER" the Highest Rating! I Knew She At Least Had A Very Good Shot But Was Over The Moon at Her Achievement and Oh So Proud To Have Played A Part! THANKS EVER SO MUCH ANNIE LENNOX!

As much as people find happiness in this song, it gets me every time because it was my auntie’s song. We just lost her last month. She treated myself and my siblings like we were her own children. This song just reminds me of her. Rip auntie ❤️

My mother and I used to dance and sing to this before my Bio dad would pick me up for the weekend. For 14 years my stepmother.....she molested me. And my "Dad" didn't care. Going through a pretty rough rough spot in life at the moment. And I find myself coming back this song that lifts me up.

Like so many others (even those who are successful in life), Annie was probably wrestling with some internal issues and using this song as a vehicle to vent those issues while also giving thx to her Mother, who likely is no longer with her. I hope the younger generation does'nt just 'hear' this song, but takes the time to really LISTEN to what's being said. It's not always about being 'deep' or 'knowing where you're going'...it's about being TRUE to yourself and never being afraid to look back and know where you came from. Your focus determines your reality. Kudos to Ms. Lennox for pushing the envelope on this song.

@@dernbuy I think the issue is time passes and every young generation thinks they invented music, sex and danger. They won’t know Annie in the Eurythmics - just the most edgy, sexy, dangerous, beautiful, alluring woman you could hope to meet. Her voice is/was stunning and those tunes will be remixed and sampled for ever. I remember hearing David Chase use this song perfectly in The Sopranos. It’s a masterpiece.

to me this song is about people desperate to escape the horrors of violent ghettoes and shitty places and realising that there is nowhere to run. there is violence drugs gangs everywhere and where they say there isn't it's only coz theyre living in denial. I don't find the song particularly uplifting. in line with the word uplifting there actually is a annie lennox song called lift which may be more inline with positivity.

Superb melody and very intelligent lyrics. Probably a lot of people long for the strength to carry on. I found the song uplifting, though, even after a traumatic event in 1992 (the sack, disguised as "redundancy").

Heads-up, she sings "mama", not my my. Its way more of an intense lyric when you realize she's begging her mother - "they always said that you knew best but this little birds fallen out of that nest now". I always get tears at that part lol which is confusing to my family since im usually changing the linens or washing dishes to this song lol

KateSkate55 2 years ago you know, ive listened to this song my whole life...and i dont know the meaning behind it...wut does it mean? well obviously we all have our own interpretations but i see the song as someone who is at least noticing the negative around them in their particular environment with reference to the lines of walking down streets dark and filled with rage and fear. you just imagin walking down streets full of rage and fear especially in the dark. the use of these words to me are all highly pejorative and negative. the person wants to escape but realises that there is nowhere to go because everywhere is the same. there is no situation or circumstance that is eternally paradisacal. love to hear someone elses take and most of all i'd love to hear annie's take
