Annie Sloan demonstrates a simple technique for creating a trimmed edge cushion using fabrics from her Fabric Collection. You can do this at home -- either sew by hand or machine. All you'll need is a bit of fabric, a cushion pad, measuring tape, scissors, pins, and a needle and thread.
The Annie Sloan Fabric Collection has been created to complement Chalk Paint®, Annie's own famous range of decorative paint. She has honed this collection from her most popular designs and her own favourites. The fabrics are sourced from France and Belgium and come in a range of styles -- a bit of boho chic, a bit of French, a bit of country, and a bit of modern.
The Annie Sloan Fabric Collection is widely available from a large number of independent stockists throughout the UK, Europe and North America.

I wish I knew how you measured the material..it looks like you measured the first one exactly the size of the pillow...how much larger did you measure the back side? Love this tutorial..thank you!

How to sew 2 high quality cushion covers together & ruin them both. I was stunned when she slashed that beautiful fabric - anyone with reasonable sewing knowledge knows you don't use your feature fabric as lining, & not if you're going to slash holes in it (when it costs $91 per metre??). Even lining the reverse with a high end linen would be less expensive. When making quality cushion covers, you also need a zipper (or other fastener), so you can remove the cushion insert & clean the cover without the insert becoming deformed, as modern cushion inserts come apart in washing machines & become misshapen ... This just seems like an obvious device to make inexperienced sewers use more of the feature fabric than they really need.

thankyou for the reply ,better late than never i guess............but Im still none the wiser im not on about the fabric going lumpy im on about the cushion insert inside the cushion, so if i pre wash the fabric it will eventually get dirty and when I wash the cushion the insert goes all lumpy..........

If you plan on making your own cover for a cushion, you have the option to select machine washable materials. I was taught to preshrink machine washable sewing fabrics in hot water before pattern cutting. That is probably less of a concern for cushion covers than it would be for garments. However, the hot water will also inform you whether your fabric is color fast or prone to bleeding dye. You can test how well a purchased insert survives a washer before using it to fill a crafted cover.

you must watch this video closely. you are actually making two "panels" and sewing them together. you would measure the material to the size of the pillow. then add the extra measurement that you would like to be exposed on the edge. for example. pillow is 12". you would like a 2" border. you would add 12 plus 2 plus the seam allowance. you could "stagger" the back side to your desired look.

Every throw cushion I've purchased has survived my washer and dryer quite nicely. My feather or foam bed pillows get the same treatment. You risk nothing but a soiled cushion you would otherwise discard. Wash at least two cushions per load so the machine can maintain balance for the spin cycle. The dryer tumbling does a wonderful job of fluffing up a pillow. If you are sewing your own cushions you are free to choose machine washable fabric and cushion stuffing.

Perhaps the seamstress in this video was trying to create a method for a specific type of audience. This method wastes quality fabric, but if cost is no concern, then a person can have the cushions made. People who own a sewing machine and are comfortable stitching a seam are capable of alternative methods.
