Anno 1800 | Balancing the Books | A Beginner's Guide to Money Inflow (Income) and Outflow (Expenses)

What this video is not: a guide to how to get rich in Anno 1800.
What this video is: a basic explanation of the top level inflow and outflow balance that combine in Anno 1800 in order to determine your empire's surplus or deficit. It's okay to have rudimentary-level questions about how your empires are meant to create profit even early in the game, and even though the game does do a lot in order to keep these matters relatively simple, it can still be challenging as a new player to the series to keep the books balanced and put yourself in a position of runaway expenses with little clue as to how to actual reap the rewards from all of your hard work.
This video merely scratches the surface, since the relationship between residents and production is, underneath, very complex, and in the long run, you do best by keeping everything properly coordinated.

As a Seasoned Veteran of strategy and all things related too it... I have never once suffered economic spirals as much as I do in this game. It certainly works a whole lot differently than what I am used to, and I struggle a ton with getting things right, or finding ways to get more money, or at least prevent myself from going down the rabbit hole of massive debt. I try to generally learn things on my own, and its worked for the most part, however with this game there are just some things about its economy system I do not understand, mostly just due to how many exponential factors all converge onto it.

I know this is an old video at this point, but as a fellow Anno newb I was actually hoping for MORE overthinking! Haha the whole time you were worried about too much overthinking but I’m trying to figure out the details of inflow/outflow and why EXACTLY I’m losing money. Like I can see the super broad categories the game gives you, but when you were talking about doing detailed math with fish and workers, etc… that’s the type of stuff I’m looking for and haven’t quite figured out yet…

It was probably a cop out on my part. :) I wish I had more time for making these sorts of videos and for responding to all of the supportive comments I've received over the past few years. At this point, I haven't played Anno in about three years, so I'd be watching these videos, myself, trying to remember anything about how to play the game! Good luck finding the info you need.

Making money at first is not that hard, but when going into the artisan stage it becomes much harder to keep the balance positive, at least to me it does. I perhaps am too impatient and growing my population too fast/ high, and taking out a competitor too soon and having the high cost of ships to do so, seems to be a problem atm. Anywho I love the game because it makes me run into a brick wall and makes me try to find a solution. I have the newer game via Steam so it is not the exact same version as in your example,. just been playing it for a few months now and have not yet obtained all the DLC's but I will eventually ;) I will keep on trial and erroring my way around until I get it if I ever reach that point?! IDK, but trying to get there that's the fun of it.

Thanks for letting me know! Haven't really been on KZbin for a while, but it's great that people are starting to find these videos and that they're helpful. Anno 1800 is such a great game, and I wish I had more time to really delve into it. I still remember being utterly confused when I began playing. I had a few disastrous attempts before I decided to try to make sense of it all.

There is a system in place that stops u from just spamming out houses on 1 island in the form of royal tax. Should any population class reach over 1050 i think the number is in 1 island u will be paying royal tax from that set of ppl class. The more ppl u add to offset this tax the higher the % that tax will be so spamming more houses will drasticly increase that tax to a max of 40% of that population class income. Spread your ppl out on diffrent islands to avoid this.

There are so many things to think about if you want a positive money flow. I have played the series since 2010 and still find new things that I have not thought of before to make cash in Anno. Especially if you get to the late game it becomes important to know about production optimization and all those little tricks to earn money. Also, trading can be very profitable in both buying and selling. I only miss the Anno 2205 World Market where you could see all the prices and how much production costs. In 1800 you have to calculate it yourself or check online.

Establish trade agreements with the other island leaders, and only keep as much of that item as your island needs. Or just turn the production off so you’re not making more than you need 👍 Hope that helps.

This was admittedly a surface level dip into the Anno 1800 economy. For an in-depth guide, I highly recommend IcyyMike's video: "How to Make Money" kzbin.info/www/bejne/iofcZKyrmrWEY9U Also, a correction: fish production is 2 tons per minute (mistakenly thought it was 2t/cycle). Apologies. You get the point, though, and it actually emphasizes what I was saying about local consumption, since trading fish wouldn't even cover the cost of maintenance (from what I've seen).

You missed a point, if you have too many farm houses or 2nd tier worker you get hit with a tax. It's an attempt to prevent players from just building houses. The entire second half of this video is wrong because of that.

I think I was trying to keep it simple, because it was really only meant to get a new player off and running. I've been playing this for a while now and cannot get my head round the simple profit and loss in the finance screen. I've got three islands and my main island is on a constant +$5000 profit. My two smaller islands are making a loss. One -$300 and the other -$70(a small island that provide hops for beer). Now clicking on these individually gives me those three figures but if i click on the tab to summarise my profit/loss for all my islands it shows me on a constant -$3000. Doesnt add up at all. I thought that maybe the queens taxes werent included but i've calculated the negatives and positives (which do incl the taxes in the list) and they are spot on re +$5000 on my island with my large population. Any idea where i'm haemoraging this amount? BTW all my production demands are either equal or higher than what my population requirements.
