first time spotting something Hikaru seems to have missed, at 4:40 white can save both the bishop and the rook/mate with Bc3. Engine only gives slight advantage to white even with a piece up, but definitely a better move than Rc1. The most threatening continuation i assumed black would have would be Red8 with the idea of taking on e1 and getting the second rook to e1, but white would have time to play f3 and kf2.

Since people don ‘t get it, let me be clear: it is disrespectful because 1. He’s playing a Top10 GM down a queen with a lone King. 2. Hikaru was not low on time. If Hikaru was low on time, then yes flagging would be acceptable. But as everyone can see, Hikaru had the luxury to screw around with his opponent. To put this in perspective, I’m a 1500 and I can win against Magnus 100000/100000 times in that position blindfolded and I don’t have to think. I’ve done this a million times. There are no tricks whatsoever. It’ just getting the opponent’s king to the back rank and there is a way to always do this. So yes, when you’re both at 2700+ and you are praying your opponent makes a blunder instead of resigning, it is a massive insult and just petty. This is completely different from a middle game with 15+ pieces still on the board where it is possible to turn things around with tactics. And this isn’t a 600 rated Elo game where you guys blunder stalemate. This is a super GM who played in the Candidates and reached Top 5, is a world renowned Bullet Chess player, has 1 min on his clock and is up a Queen against a lone King. So please show some respect and resign. P.S. not a fan of Hikaru, just giving my 2 cents on people who keep saying Hikaru is petty. I will treat my opponents with respect, and I expect the same from my opponent. Anyone who believes it is okay to drag end games like these out are probably too low rated or has no idea this endgame is a 100% win if there is no flagging.

@@naptown9672 maybe you're too low rated or do not know proper chess etiquettes. I've played enough games to know that what the opponent was doing was out of spite. It was not flagging, the position is 100% won, and the opponent is a super GM. My suggestion to you is: get a GM title (heck, get good enough to play 2000 rated opponents), play a closed over the board tournament and try doing what HIkaru's opponent did. Come back and talk to me once you do that. My guess is you'll never do it because you'll be too embarrassed to walk out of the playing hall. There's a reason Hikaru made a video on this. Because it's a highly unacceptable behaviour and everyone who plays chess seriously knows it.

For lower rated players sure. Anyone who's half decent at Chess knows that position is a 100% win and there's no point wasting time playing it out. It's not a middle game with lots of tactics and complications. This is the K+Q/R vs K endgame that is basically the basic of the basic for endgames. Yes, it is disrespectful to drag it out of spite. Just resign after the promotion.

It's direspectful because you are wasting both your time and your opponent's time. Beyond 600, you should resign if your opponent is up a queen. Especially because Hikaru had >1 min and increment.

Its more of a respect for Hikaru’s ability more than anything. If Hikaru is down a queen against Magnus with no compensation. He wont play on, out of respect for magnus because playing on would basically be saying “I dont think you can checkmate me despite being down a queen” This opponent more specifically as soon as hikaru got a queen, Majority of people resign out of respect to the opponent’s technique. Only time people dont resign is when the person with the queen is low on time but Hikaru has greater than a minute.

Because you've been outplayed and have no pieces left. It's considered poor sportsmanship. You're only not resigning to try and annoy your opponent out of spite and waste time. A GM is not going to make a ridiculous blunder and allow you to draw the game. That is a given. This is simply how sportsmanship in Chess works, but you get people pulling this crap all the time because they're annoyed that they lost.

The second his opponent was down a queen he should have instantly resigned. That's just saving time for both players. By not resigning you're either purposefully wasting time, or praying that your gm opponent is going to blunder stalemate, which is extremely disrespectful.
