I just had a fox attack. It couldn’t get in to the chickens but managed to pull the wing off of one of my 5 months old chicks. Is it worth trying to save? Should I cull? There’s bone showing. I have used anti bacterial and aspirin for pain. He’s eating and drinking ok. I have him inside with the two others and they seem fine by their behaviour together. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do?

Oh no! That's terrible, so sorry to hear that. Its a bit of a 50 / 50 situation. I once had a Sussex who was attacked, and had the breast servery damaged. She lived on, and came through. However, the skin never healed right, and was like dried up roast chicken. Feathers never grew back. It didn't seem to affect her, and she kept going. But, if I was in your situation, with parts missing, and bone showing, I would probably go straight for cull. Main reason being, is that although it may be ok now, an infection would easierly get into a wound like that. Plus it could mean alot of extra care in the future. Its not an easy choice to make, and in these circumstances, and with chickens, I normally sleep on it, and see how the bird is in the morning.

Well today he still is acting like nothing is wrong! Eating, drinking, and running around the “chicken hospital “ . Any sign of acting sick then I think I will cull. It’s strange. I wasn’t even going to keep him. He was going to be rehomed with another Japanese bantam/sebright female.
