From Egg to Chicken (Pt 4) Hatching and Brooder

In Part 4 of our egg to bird series, we see the eggs hatching, and transfer the chocks to the brooder.
Whilst the hatch rate wasn't we wanted (it was pretty rubbish TBF), we did end up with chicks, and can now follow them through the rest of the process.

Watched your video as ours were hatching yesterday and today. Fully intended to follow your instructions not to help out stuck chick, but failed miserably. Bit of a horror story but Quasimoto eventually survived my diabolical efforts. Cheers for the advice, may be next time I will be less anxious. Cheers from Australia.

Ha ha! As is always the way :) Had I not of been filming, I probably would have jumped in. I was tempted to, but couldn't believe how low the hatch rate was from this incubator. I wish Quasimoto the best for the future (what a great name)!

I hope the one with the bad legs survives, it's nice to see that one couple try their best for a little chicken. I also noticed that you had a duck egg in your incubator with chicken eggs? I am sure the time difference is different and did it survive?

Thank You. We're still trying with the chick and will update that in next weeks video 'Caring for chicks'. There is a difference for duck eggs, of about a week for hatching. I thought I had removed all the duck eggs (we only have 1 laying duck), but will re-watch the video and see.

I have 2 Brinsea always used them, but they are new only a year old, and get between 90-100% hatch rates 😊 loved following these videos

Hello Annoy Dad Bit of a question. I notice that my chicks tend to hatch a few hours apart most of the time and as a result the early ones end up pushing/rolling again the other eggs around. My concern is that if the egg that are being rolled have chicks in them could be rotated to an angle they can't pip their way out. Have you any advice on how to prevent this at all? I've tried putting a cardboard box over the incubator to trick the chicks to think it's night so they won't move as much.

I've noticed this to. However, I don't think it makes a difference. When eggs get to that stage, they do tend to roll, until they settle at one point. This is due to a drop in the air sack. So if you put the egg on a surface, it would roll and always end up at the same point. When the chicks start their rampage, the eggs will be moved and jostled around. But will always try to end up in that position. If the chick is strong enough, it should be able to pip and come out the egg. We have seen pips start in the bottom, sides and top. The other thing to remember, is that the chicks will move the eggs more than once. So if they have been put an egg upside down, there is a high chance the chicks will roll them back again.

Imagine reincarnation is real and you come back as a chick having to peck your way out of an egg while being filmed for KZbin and you can’t talk to the humans because when you do, only peeps come out so you’re stuck to live the rest of this life out as a chicken
