God, A Silent Voice made me so angry a lot of the time, and on purpose, for sure. It really gets you to understand how bullying is a social phenomenon broader than one or two mean people - it takes a class to bully a kid, often. I was bullied in elementary and middle school and there was a circle of people, only a few actually doing the bullying, the rest laughing, and outside of them other people just watching and doing nothing. I'm deeply not proud of it, but it reached a breaking point in 8th grade, and I lashed out at one of the people who was laughing at me. They weren't even involved in the teasing, just laughing about it. I was suspended for a week, which I didn't end up thinking was much of a punishment because 8th grade was hell, and I got to vibe at home playing Pokemon. anyway, the point is, the bullying I endured wasn't any one particular tormentor, it was the class tacitly agreeing I was an Acceptable Target, and everyone either participating or ignoring it. And as a result of that experience, I felt a deep, visceral loathing for the other kids who joined in/enabled Shouko's bullying, and then refused to shoulder any responsibility.

I agree to some degree but there is a line. To me, Nom Nom from We Bare Bears is way past that line. He's unlikable on purpose but if I'm supposed to understand that he's unlikable, I have no reason to wanna repeatedly watch episodes where they try to bait me into thinking he's getting better when I know the episode is almost always gonna end with the revelation that he's secretly planning something scummy. Characters even acknowledge it & he's sometimes even shown plotting his scummy twist during the episode so I have no clue why someone decided he should be a reoccurring character. It's like they arbitrarily thought they couldn't drop any of the animal characters but they could only come up with one idea for him so they just basically remade the same episode repeatedly. It's kinda like Ronaldo from Steven Universe. He feels like one of those people you meet in real life who keep learning the same lesson because they don't have a strong enough moral code to stick to what they learned. It's realistic but it's not interesting & it's extremely irritating. I don't wanna watch a narcissist who once attempted murder with no remorse learning to be more respectful to his friends when he doesn't deserve those friends in the first place & I know he's just gonna do the same shit in his next episode.

Euphoria is filled with the most unlikeable, self centered, self righteous people ever represented in a series I think ever. But I think that's the point. They are the stereotypical high school people taken to the fuckin max, Gen Z on steroids, bad enough to make millennials vote conservative. But instead of humanizing high school, I think it works to the shows detriment, because anytime these characters succeed at something their attitude and actions ruin it. The show is so backwards that the drug dealer is more likeable than the drug addict. Strange asf story telling. the likeable characters rarely take a center role. I think the entire show hinges on unlikeable characters being unlikeable, but convincing u their right in their arrogance. It's marketing genius but at the same time terrible storytelling. Edit: more terrible than genius... I only mean genius because it has attracted the attention of basically and entire generation... which one can argue was the selling point in the first place.

Euphoria is a brilliant show because it teaches people how to be a good person by showing the WORST people.
@aidandavis76572 жыл бұрын
@@kingcyclops4079 I would tend to agree with you. Certainly these characters aren't shown in the most flattering way. But I don't know if its convincing people on how to be better, most of the comments I see addressing the criticisms of the show boil down to "its just a work of fiction" which removes any impact it could have on the real world, especially when tackling real world topics like drug abuse or the terrible behaviors these teens exhibit (cheating, gossip, irrationality). I see a lot of comment actually applauding characters being toxic or confrontational, because they're "empowering" or "owning it" or "being a queen." But that doesn't excuse the intensely irresponsible shit these people do. Shit I'm a teenager and I find it very unsettling. The show shows the consequences, but they are ultimately overshadowed by the immensely glossy, beautifully shot scenes of absolute chaos. If the show were to take a more educational outlook, it wouldn't be popular. Look at what happened with 13 Reasons Why, they basically abandoned the "starting a conversation" motive for the sake of entertainment value. I'll say this, amongst my friends and I we hate most of the characters in the show, but goddamn do we here applauding those same characters for being themselves or being perfect in their own ways. It's a very strange thing to talk about because I actually WANT to like the show, but with everything it is MEANT to represent, I feel like it misses the mark.
@kingcyclops40792 жыл бұрын
@@aidandavis7657 that's a really good point. The show does kinda go overboard with visual even if it does look good. It would be like John Wick being about the evils of revenge and the criminal underworld but then have these cool ass neon lit fight scenes. So although the message is there it's glossed over by the cool scenes. I said this in a comment, that the show should instead be a movie all about Rue's recovery because Rue as a character is relatable and understandable. You get why she's like this and why she does the things she does. Rue's family perfectly shows the effects of her addiction. She has these "euphoric" moments when she's high but as soon as it ends it gets worse and worse. Compare this to the teen bullshit where people are either selfish, self righteous and manipulative. These are are just shitty awful people, Rue is suffering from horrible disorders and trauma so her cynicism although is wrong you get why she is so cold and you want her to get better.
@aidandavis76572 жыл бұрын
@@kingcyclops4079 exactly my feelings. they really lean into Rue being absolutely AWFUL which I love. She is broken, she does need help, the problem comes when she's in a position to receive it but refuses it for the sake of feeling free or in control. I think she got the dose of reality she needed when she almost got kidnapped and sold into sex slavery by Laurie (I'm not saying she should've been, just saying it was a traumatic enough experience that she was able to snap out of it). Like she could've went to all the rehabs in the world, and still wouldn't have gotten clean. Her redemption arc is pretty well handled imo, because at the end of the first season I despised her, by the end of the second I was kind of proud of her, and instead hated everyone else for enabling her!!! The bathroom scene where cassie is worried she looks like shes from Oklahoma, and they ask if Rue is on drugs and she says yes and everyone goes "you relapsed" and then she ADMITS she's smoking weed and they COMPLETELY gloss over it! Like these people are terrible for not taking that shit seriously, but instead they're worried more about Cassie wearing the wrong thing to school??? Elliot and Jules especially allowing her to drink later on in the season. A kid I know was addicted to xans, went to rehab, and still went to every fucking party getting drunk and high, and did anyone try and stop him? Ofc not because they either couldn't care less or they didn't think it was a big deal. So yeah I think Rue's arc was perfect from the standpoint of being optimistic as well as realistic, and I could definitely do without all the senseless highschool bullshit

Something I always hated about a lot of shows was characters who would be outright assholes, never change, but would get praise and the story would revolve around them as if they’re correct. I have no problem with asshole characters, it’s actually something I like in some in shows I see, but it really grinds my gears when the storytelling acts like they’re not an asshole, because it shows it wasn’t on purpose.

I'm of the opinion that people who write asshole characters without clearly framing them as assholes probably hold some of the same opinions or behaviors themselves, and that's why they lack the self awareness required to incorporate it properly into a story.

They're right there with it and not only that the worst part and it absolutely will ruin the story for me, when other characters oppose this pathetic annoying character and they're instantly vilified. I hated Jenny until I realized the reason why she kept rejecting Forrest after somewhat leading him on was because she really did love him but she felt she was taking advantage of him how her father took advantage of her as a child.
@HienPham-ow5ky2 жыл бұрын
Some people look down on Jenny for the way she treated Forrest, probably because they've had difficult relationships themselves. But when you look at what happens with an objective mind you can see she goes out of her way to not harm him. She stays as far away from him as possible whilst she suffers the effects of having been raped as a child. Indeed the worst thing she does is leave him without saying goodbye and deprive him of fatherthood for some time in a later scene. It is quite commendable to limit your pain to yourself rather than becoming corrupted by it to the point of harming your loved ones. It is also quite commendable that Forrest looks past the destructive behaviour she has limited to herself and still sees only the good in her. Whatever limited pain he does experience as an unintentional consequence of her actions he depletes within himself in a productive way through the force of his spirituality kzbin.info/www/bejne/qojdk3ahZp2qitk. This is what Eternal Dharma/Soulmateship is all about, indeed this is what Love is all about. Doing the utmost to not harm the harmless, and depleting the pain you do receive within yourself. But all of that requires great spiritual fortitude that has built up over countless lifetimes. Those who are not so spiritually developed risk intentionally hurting others. For them all you can do is set a good example by living according to Principle, and making yourself available to give therm guidance. But you need to be very careful when you do encounter corrupted persons. On the one extreme you should not judge and condemn them as being worthless. On the other extreme you should not destroy yourself to try and save them, which is a risk that exists if you're spiritually driven because you will find something good in them. Instead you should approach everything in life in an intelligent, balanced way. That means just teach thern Principle if they are interested. Without making the mistake of "falling in love" that is actually lust. Such corrupted persons often suffer from being unloved by those they have loved from a young age, such as their parents. So they have a twisted idea of what love actually is and that can lead to bad outcomes when combined with the greed, hatred, ignorance that arises from their pain. If their love remains unrequited they will destroy themselves trying to replace it with sensual pleasures. Their only hope is to find spirituality and serve the Principle of Love itself rather seeking love from others. And your duty is limited to showing them the way if you have the Wisdom to do so. All of this means you should never help anyone in a way that indulges their greed, hatred, ignorance, out of your misguided love for them, because that will actually harm them tbh with you.

EDIT: One other observation, even if I'm maybe reading too much into the story, I came to realize from the conversations in the comments (lots of great responses everyone, love the discussions!) is how I can see where the dissonance with observing Jenny's character comes from. Jenny is a realistic person. Forest is not. Now that isn't a bad thing at all! I love Forest, he has a lot more depth than people give him credit for, and is the perfect protagonist for this story, but he basically wouldn't exist as is in any real life sense. He's more of an idea of the American myth rather than anything real. And like Jogoso2014 basically pointed out, if Forest is the idealized version then Jenny is the antithesis. So having this perfect pure boi that is an ideal with this tragically flawed realistic person can feel a bit weird and make her actions seem much more malicious than I think was intended by the filmakers. You want to protect Forest and believe his reality is emblematic of real life. But if you accept Jenny as she is and are sympathetic you may unintentionally have to accept that 20th century America was pretty crappy for a lot of people especially if they weren't white men. And that's a hard pill to swallow even now in modern discourse. This may be getting a bit too meta but I think it's an interesting observation. EDIT 2: I see how a lot of people think that Jenny took sexual advantage of Forest. I genuinely disagree as outlined in my OP and comments but I understand the perspective. And arguably she may not even have the foundation to understand true consent, as her first sexual experiences were unconsenting and abusive by the one person who should have protected her in this world. So even if she did, that adds to her tragity and depth imo, sins of the father creates a cycle of abuse.
@baonguyenxuanthai7112 жыл бұрын
Just rewatched Forest Gump for like the 5th time: I laughed, I cried, I shrimped, etc. It's one of my favorites. But when reading the discourse of the movie most of the critisism is always with Jenny. Like everyone seems to genuinely think that 30 second Family Guy joke actually is what happens in the movie. I think it just shows how a lot of people don't have experience or knowledge with sexual abuse victims. Jenny is portrayed fairly tragically and realistically. There's a reason this part of her life is clearly pointed out as it's integral to her actions. There are so many movies that have Jenny like characters without that background and the depth, but here when it's being done so accurately, is the time people get the most upset about it (probably bc Forest is so lovable everyone wants to protect him). Yes she isn't the best person (I wouldn't judge Forest if he didn't want anything to do with her) but even watching now I see the internal struggle she always has regarding Forest. But his unconditional and relentless love is something hard to let go of for someone who's been through what she has, growing up in a time where she was unable to get the help from mental health experts she would need. So she tries filling her life with sex, drugs, adventure, etc to keep her mind occupied. And being with all those abusive boyfriends is a very common action for someone who's suffered from abuse. And critics ignore that Jenny seems aware of all this and does try to get away to let Forest live his life without her, that's part of why she keeps leaving. But codependent relationships are much more common and harder to leave without unbiased intervention than people think. And every time she sees Forest or gets too deep in her choices she runs back. I think the perspective it just helps play into this subconscious heteronormative idea that women can be a succubus who will use men who love them and drain them of their love and money but not really care about them. Instead of seeing women as actual people with depth and complexity and especially ones who have been through what she has. And they also ignore how the movie portrays her, breaking it down to small bits that obfuscate the complexities. If a woman isn't a completely altruistic character in a story then she is generally considered a bad person (look at how complicated bad men are treated by audiences in media vs women) and then going further with Jenny being more damaged than that makes her hated. I don't personally think a character has to always be the best person morally to be a great character. And furthermore she indirectly helps Forest succeed. His love for her is what often kept him passionate and moving to be successful. And her leaving all those times gave him space to pursue those activities. I'm not saying she's responsible for his success but she definitely didn't undermine it. Though I can't help but feel my heart break every time I see the scene when she leaves one of the times and Forest is with his mom by the lake and rests his head on her shoulders. Pretty relatable to me especially in my younger dating life. It's just a sad reality of life that the people you love may not be able to love you the same way. But it's all part of the depth of the story, Jenny torn between giving forest his space (she tells him numerous times she thinks she's bad for him) but unable to ever completely relinquish that love he has for her. Neither Forest nor Jenny have been given their fair share of direction in life to love in a healthier way (Jenny being broken by her history and Forest not having been taught to move on from unrequited love). But I also think people undermine Forest's intelligence more than he deserves and put all the onis on Jenny. Kind of like many people in the movie undermine his intelligence (fancy that...). Forest isn't stupid, he just treats and perceives situations in more simplistic and naive ways. A big factor of why he thinks he's stupid is that people keep telling him he is rather than his actions being stupid. He's a product of a time before we understood nuero divergent intelligence, yet still succeeds in spite of all that. The man is a captivating storyteller, was an ideal soldier when things were explained in clear unambiguous ways, yet still knew to break rank to save his platoon in Vietnam, he understood everything that was happening in Vietnam and it's dangers, starting a shrimping business (how many of you could get a boat and start shrimping without KZbin tutorials), didn't let the prostitute sleep with him bc he didn't like her or her breath, understood he was lying in an ad for money, also understands and sympathizes with Jenny's trauma (the not enough rocks line is very underrated imo), etc. He also knows Jenny doesn't love him the way he loves her. He literally calls her out for it and says he understands what love is regardless of what she thinks. He also seems to get that Jenny is dying of Aids (EDIT: It's never explicit what she has) and wants to marry him for the safety and care at the end. Forest chooses this life with her because it makes him happy. I don't really see it as taking advantage of someone cognitively divergent, but two people choosing a situation that works for them. I see it as two wayward souls in a world that doesn't understand how to see anyone not completely binary in their mind and abilities finding each other and living their best life at the end. It's not all perfect, Jenny is not a great person, but Forest is happy and successful. I think that matters. Out of all the critiques on the movie (Jenny, Forest being too pure, coincidences, etc) the only ones that make sense to me now are how weirdly the movie is anti counter culture and pro traditional culture. That anyone can be successful if you pull yourself up by your bootstaps and all the liberals are angry abusive drains in society. And the total belief in a Christian God. I mean damn, the movie implies God caused a storm to ruin the shrimping boats of a bunch of poor black shrimpers just so 2 white guys can become rich. Can't believe I didn't catch that until this viewing. Gump being so effortlessly successful gives unintended creedance to conservative values. As much as I absolutely love this movie and it's one of the few 9 out of 10s in my head cannon, I still can't help but laugh to myself when I think a good tag line would be "Even the dumbest white guy has it easier than minorities and women in this country". But I just blame that on the source material. I mean they fixed up so much from the book (don't read it, I promise you it's not worth it, there's a reason the film rights were sold before the book was published bc the central premise is literally the only good thing about it) it's not surprising some very unuanced anti left aspects stayed involved.

Sometimes the annoying characters in shows are some of the best, A Silent Voice would be sooo much worse without Miki or Naoka and similarly Euphoria would be worse without Cassie. These characters generally serve to make shows more interesting with antagonists that are more realistic to the real world. I know that you said you had not seen GoT but I think that it shows this off incredibly well with the Lanisters. It allows characters to not have to be evil to have to serve as an antagonist. Writing a character who has deep flaws like many of the ones mentioned in this video can add a lot to a show.

And even in the manga she was down right just plain annoying. Now for Naoka, I completely hate her, but I prefer Naoka over Miki anytime.

@l4ndst4nder2 жыл бұрын
I have no problem when it’s clear that the creators intend that a character is annoying. But what I can’t stand is when a writer is inserting their half baked beliefs into a character and everyone comments on how smart and/or cool they are. The worst example I’ve seen of this outside of fan fiction, is James Halliday from the Ready Player One novel.
@Gemnist982 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting pick. I guess you can say that Halliday is some kind of deified man, or at least Ernest Cline’s interpretation of one, but because he’s rarely delved deeper into (and also dead by the beginning of the story) I don’t think you can hold him to the “self-insert” mold. Meanwhile, the movie does reduce the god persona, at somewhat of the cost of the novel’s original message (though that reflects more on how Wade and his character arc are written in the movie compared to the novel).

Ayyy, glad to see Miki on here. She's ten times worse in the manga, and I genuinely think she's worse than naoko as well Edit: I think it's cos Naoko actually grows as a person and learns to accept shouko by the end. Miki remains a degenerate and is never really punished for her hypocrisy, playing the victim, and being an onlooker/only intervening when convenient or to make herself look better. (Just my opinion and what I remember, I read the Manga like 5 years ago. Pls correct me if I'm wrong)

Naoko was still an ass by the end of the Anime, but at least she isn't actively trying to destroy Ishida's relationships and she may be starting to get used to Shouko. Miki however... Ho ho.... She never really reached out to Ishida after he fell trying to save Shouko's life. She only went to Shouko and "comforted" her after she tried to kill herself, making her look like a caring person. She was self-righteous during the bridge scene, thinking Ishida was the only one behind the bullying and then pretending she was a good person AFTER Shouko's suicide attempt. Even when Ishida got better, she acted like she didn't fuck him up emotionally and destroy everyone's image of him. All she did for him was give him a bunch of paper cranes that isn't even complete AND ISNT EVEN FROM HER. She was and will always remain a bitch.

I think it's fine if it's clearly being presented as fun wacky comedy. But where it becomes an issue, is how the girl is being presented. Where writers mess up often, is they don't present them all that comedy like and just feels too serious, that said girl is annoying rather than entertaining. Another thing, is people complain about romance dense MCs, but they will never get on the tsundere girls for getting mad at the MC yet refuse to tell him why they are even mad (if he doesn't know what he did wrong, then he can't improve himself, and the girls are actually the insensitive ones for getting mad and not actually saying why), or the fact the girls are rude to the MC almost all the time they talk to him yet all hell breaks loose in and out of verse if the MC dares talk back and say something mean (even though usually the girls deserve any snark or back talk).

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who is annoyed with the elementary "friends" in The Silent Voice. Especially that blonde who made herself to be the victim when she's the leader of the classroom where everyone was in during elementary. SHE CRIED when questioned by their elementary adviser. SHE CRIED when the male protag asked her what she did during that time and why she let it that long haired girl's bullying slide. She act like the bullying was a one man show when everyone did it. Even her. Ghad, especially her. She has the power and authority to punish everyone for the bullying but was scared it would ruin the friendship and school life of her friends. Even though, pink haired deaf girl was suffering from discrimination by their hands. She could've scolded them for their actions. Rather than kept her head down and point fingers at everyone. The Silent Voice was mishandled by the cast of unnecessary side characters. They could be necessary if they faced consequences of their actions but all they had was a slap on their wrists. And bam, friendship! I am sorry I don't remember the names of the characters. That is how much I hated the movie.

@@alpacawithouthat987 I agree all the way. When I watched that movie for the first time his ""friends"" left a bad taste in my mouth. I would have loved the movie if it had not been for them! Was the absolute worst to see them get off the hook and most infuriated I've been at fictional characters; especially cause I've grown up around toxic family members who would rather play victim then ever own up to any of the emotional abuse they put people through. Would have been better if Shoya had cut those jerks out of his life, because people like them will drag you down in real life and will just continue being toxic.

I actually really like that Jenny is unlikeable. Her unlikability isn’t a weakness of the film, it’s definitely at least somewhat intentional.
